Austin Jackson’s on his way to Cincinnati after two rehab games up the road for Triple-A Toledo. The Tigers, as expected, activated their center fielder from the 15-day disabled list Saturday morning. But they had more moves in store.

All-Star shortstopJhonny Peralta, whose wife has been expecting with their first child, has been placed on paternity leave so that he can join her at their home in Cleveland. With just two infielders on the 40-man roster who aren’t with the big club already — and just-demoted Ryan Raburn being the other one — the Tigers recalled second-base prospect Hernan Perez from Class A Lakeland.

The 20-year-old Perez is batting .252 (53-for-210) with two home runs, 53 RBIs and 11 stolen bases for the Flying Tigers. One would expect that he’ll be on the bench in an as-needed role while Ramon Santiago and Danny Worth handle the middle infield spots.

That said, if Perez does get into a game, he’ll become the 40th person to play for the Tigers this season.

UPDATE: To make room for Jackson, the Tigers have optioned Jose Ortega back to Toledo. That seems to be more of a statement about getting by with Justin Verlander on the mound Saturday than it is about Octavio Dotel being ready to return. The available relievers for sure are Valverde, Benoit, Below, Marte and Villarreal.

Perez in awe of first Major League game

CINCINNATI -- Hernan Perez got the call to the Major Leagues around 9:15 a.m. on Saturday and thought it was a practical joke. Guys playing at Class A Lakeland don't get called up to the big leagues.

"I said, 'Really? I don't believe it,'" he said.

Sometime between the call and the 11:15 a.m. flight he had to catch in Orlando, Fla., about an hour away, he realized they were serious and got packing.

He had to connect in Atlanta, then had to count on some deft driving from one of the visiting clubhouse personnel from Great American Ball Park to get him in from the airport. But he arrived shortly before game time.

By the seventh inning, the 21-year-old second-base prospect was making his big league debut as a pinch-hitter. He was still in awe after the game.

In fact, for his first Major League game as a player, he sounded more like a fan.

"For me, my first big league game, I saw [Justin] Verlander pitch, [Jose] Valverde closing, Prince [Fielder] homer. I'll never forget it," Perez said.

When the Tigers were in a pinch in June 2012, they called this Venezuelan middle infielder up to make his unexpected big league debut. Granted, he made just two appearances – though he did collect his first Major League hit – but it was a sign of just what the organization thinks about his future. Perez started out as a shortstop, and can still fill in there if needed, though he fits much better at second and should be an above-average defender there. He has the chance to hit for average, a line-drive hitter who makes a lot of contact and has a little extra-base pop as well. He’s an above-average runner who can steal a base and concerns about him wearing down over the course of a long season, as he did in 2011, were assuaged with a strong second half in 2012.

Four Tigers prospects recognized as All-Stars

DETROIT -- The All-Star Futures Games participants aren't the only Minor Leaguers receiving recognition, as the Tigers had four prospects selected for the 2013 Eastern League All-Star Game.

Catcher James McCann, second baseman Herman Perez, right-hander Warwick Saupold and lefty Will Startup were chosen from Double-A Erie for the game on July 10 at New Britain Stadium.

McCann was the Tigers' top selection in the 2011 First-Year Player Draft. He's hitting .306 with two home runs and 32 RBIs, and is ranked as the top catcher and the team's No. 11 prospect in the Tigers' farm system by MLB.com.

The Tigers signed Perez as a non-drafted free agent in 2007, and he's ranked as the team's No. 12 prospect. He has an Eastern League-high 24 doubles this season and is second in the league with 93 hits and 19 stolen bases. Perez played in two games with the Tigers last summer.

Saupold will not participate in the All-Star Game after being placed on the seven-day disabled list with a shoulder injury. Before he was sidelined, he went 4-3 with a 2.96 ERA in 13 starts.

The Tigers signed Startup this offseason after he was released by the Orioles. He's made 16 appearances out of Erie's bullpen, holding opposing hitters to a .195 batting average with a 2.10 ERA.

DETROIT -- Despite Omar Infante's best attempts to make it back into the Tigers' lineup over the weekend, he'll have to settle for a stint on the 15-day disabled list due to a sprained left ankle.

"I'm thinking maybe the DL," Infante told MLive.com after Monday's win. "I'll know [on Tuesday]. I did some light running today, but it wasn't easy. I can't run or jog. I can't do nothing."

The Tigers recalled second baseman Hernan Perez from Double-A Erie. Perez leads the Eastern League in hits (108) and doubles (28) and is second in stolen bases (24). Perez appeared in two games for the Tigers last summer, going 1-for-2 with a run scored.

Infante was placed on the DL retroactive to Thursday, when he suffered the injury on a hard slide by the Blue Jays' Colby Rasmus. Infante could return to the club by the team's first game after the All-Star break on July 19.

The Tigers signed Perez as a non-drafted free agent in 2007, and he's ranked as the No. 12 prospect in the Tigers' farm system by MLB.com. He will bat eighth and play second base in Tuesday's game against the White Sox.

Perez making a splash with his bat

CHICAGO -- It looked for a while like rookie callup Hernan Perez would make the biggest impact during this big league stint with his glove. Then he hit an inside-the-park home run.

Well, technically it was a triple and an error. But Perez will take it. It would have been the young infielder's first home run, but instead he'll settle for his first triple.

"When I saw [third-base coach Tom Brookens] sending me home, I said, 'I have to get there however I can,'" Perez said.

During the sixth inning of Tuesday night's 6-2 victory, Perez laced a line drive into the left-center-field gap and White Sox left fielder Dayan Viciedo misplayed it badly, allowing Perez to come around to score. On a day in which he made some shining plays in the field, his race around the bases stood out.

"Usually when I'm pitching, I don't show much emotion, but I was pretty pumped for him," starting pitcher Rick Porcello said. "An inside-the-parker -- or a triple. That was awesome for him. I was happy to see it. He swung the bat well and played great defense. He had a heck of a game."

With Omar Infante on the disabled list, Perez has gotten the at-bats this week against Chicago's left-handed starters. He was batting .300 with 28 doubles, two triples, four home runs and 35 RBIs in 86 games with Double-A Erie this year.

"He's got great instincts," Porcello said. "He breaks to the ball real quick. A lot of those balls he was making plays on are base hits normally, and he just did a heck of a job. He's quick, he's got a great arm, which allows him to make some tough throws. He's been doing a great job while Omar's been out."

Perez recalled due to Peralta's suspension

CLEVELAND -- Technically, Hernan Perez's stint back at Double-A Erie lasted just three days before the Tigers recalled him to replace the suspended Jhonny Peralta. For all practical purposes, however, Perez never left.

Under most circumstances, a player optioned to the Minors must wait 10 days before he can be recalled, unless he's replacing a player that is placed on the disabled list. For roster purposes, however, a suspended player is treated like a DL situation.

Thus Perez, optioned to Erie on Friday to make room for Jose Iglesias on the Tigers roster, was back with the team in Cleveland by Monday afternoon. Since the Erie squad was on the road at New Britain, Conn., over the weekend, Perez didn't go far.

Perez will reprise his role as the part-time second baseman alongside Ramon Santiago while Omar Infante is out.

Infante back in the lineup; Perez optioned to Triple-A

CHICAGO -- Second baseman Omar Infante returned to the Tigers lineup, batting seventh, for Monday night's series opener against the White Sox at U.S. Cellular Field.

Infante had been shelved since July 4, when he was retroactively placed on the 15-day disabled list with a left ankle sprain. He played five games at Triple-A Toledo, batting .211 (4-for-19) and was 0-for-3 in his final tuneup Sunday.

The second baseman was 0-for-4 in Detroit's 6-2 loss.

"He's just got to get back in the swing of things," Tigers manager Jim Leyland said. "The speed of the game up here is a little more than it is in Triple-A, obviously, and he'll get back into the speed of it and is going to be fine."

Fellow infielder Hernan Perez was optioned to Toledo to make room for Infante. The 22-year-old Perez appeared in seven games in his second stint with the Tigers this season, getting only two hits -- each on Aug. 8 -- while making four starts.

Leyland said he believes the young infielder has a bright future.

"I think Perez has a chance to be a really good Major League player and a really good offensive player, as well as defense," Leyland said. "I think he's got a chance to be a real good all-around player."

Coke, Perez join Tigers as preface to September callups

DETROIT -- Phil Coke's trip to Triple-A Toledo wasn't so much a demotion as it was a hiatus to work out some mechanical issues, the Tigers said at the time. Ten days and six scoreless Minor League innings later, Coke returned to the team, recalled just in time for qualify for the postseason roster.

The Tigers also recalled infielder Hernan Perez, who gives Detroit some infield depth now and potentially for the postseason if Miguel Cabrera's abdominal strain continues to put his status in question. The moves are the first of a multi-stage process the Tigers are taking with September callups. More moves will be announced Sunday morning once rosters expand, with the last coming early next week.

To make room, the Tigers optioned long relievers Jeremy Bonderman to Triple-A Toledo and Luke Putkonen to Class A Lakeland. Both will be recalled in the coming days once the respective Minor League seasons ends.

Since Lakeland's season ends Sunday, Putkonen can return Monday in Boston. Bonderman, who for contract reasons couldn't be optioned anywhere but Triple-A, will have to wait another day while the Mud Hens season concludes Monday afternoon.

The Tigers optioned Coke to Toledo on Aug. 20 with the express purpose of getting his pitches back in order. His six scoreless innings with five hits, a walk and nine strikeouts would suggest that he did.

"Coke went down there and threw well, which does not surprise us, because his velocity has been good," team president/general manager Dave Dombrowski said. "He kept the ball down better there, which is one thing we wanted him to work on. He wasn't just throwing hard for the sake of throwing hard. Part of his problem has been the command aspect of it, and he did a better job of that at Triple-A. Hopefully, he can continue. He only had a few outings."

His return to the Tigers' bullpen adds some lefty depth that was threatening to haunt them, most recently Friday night. Though Asdrubal Cabrera enters Saturday batting .235 with a lone home run against lefties this year, Tigers manager Jim Leyland had only one lefty available in setup man Drew Smyly for the opener. Thus, with the bases loaded in the sixth inning and flu-stricken Rick Porcello running out of gas, Leyland turned to Al Alburquerque, who ended up walking Cabrera, a player he struck out four times in six previous meetings.

Perez joins the Tigers for his third stint this year, having spent most of July and a week in August filling in at second base for an injured Omar Infante. The Tigers' eighth-ranked prospect who projects as the second baseman of the future can also play shortstop, which gives him some utility value. More valuable for postseason purposes, he's a speedster on the basepaths, having stolen 55 bases in 66 tries in the Minors over the last two years.

"He's not a burner, but he allows Jim to use him as a pinch-runner, with the flexibility of position," Dombrowski said. "He can play second, play short, move some other people around. But he does give us some speed."
