Focus Area
Comments
Fastball:Satterwhite touched 95 mph and pitched at 92-93 mph.
Fastball movement:He had good movement and life on his fastball.
Slider:It's a pretty good slider, though inconsistent.
Changeup:His changeup is average at best.
Control:His command is up-and-down because of inconsistencies with his delivery.
Poise:He seems to lack some maturity on the mound at times.
Physical Description:Satterwhite is everything you want from a pitcher, with a tall, lean, projectable body and plenty of room for growth.
Medical Update:Healthy.
Strengths:At times, he has electric stuff, particularly with the fastball and slider.
Weaknesses:He gets hit more than he should considering his stuff. Problems with his arm slot and release point have kept him from being consistent.
Summary:Originally the Ole Miss Saturday starter, Satterwhite got bumped to Sundays because of his uneven performance. Scouts still love his body and his arm strength, but he's gotten hit much more than you'd think he should based on his electric stuff. The issues largely come from inconsistencies in his delivery and despite the subpar season, a team that feels it can tweak his mechanics is still likely to draft the right-hander fairly early.

Prospect Chronicles: 10 Detroit Tigers Who Could Make an Impact in 2010

Johnny Lawrence
Featured Columnist
Correspondent - BLEACHER REPORT

6. Cody Satterwhite, RHP, Age 23

Highest Level: AA (Erie)
Acquired: 2008 (Second Round)
40-Man Roster: No

Control issues have followed Satterwhite from college to the pros — he walked 27 in 49.1 frames at Erie last year.

Satterwhite brings a 95-mph fastball with late life to the mound, complemented by a hard-diving slider. If he ever gains command, he can develop into a solid late-inning reliever.

Injuries or inconsistencies that have plagued the Detroit bullpen since 2007 may help Satterwhite receive a call up.

Top Tiger prospect Cody Satterwhite out with shoulder injury
Lynn Henning / The Detroit News

Cody Satterwhite, one of the Tigers' top pitching prospects, has an ominous shoulder injury that will shelve him for the beginning of the regular season at Double-A Erie.

The injury is being regarded for now as a "strain" that the Tigers and their doctors hope Satterwhite can overcome through rehabilitation. Although there have been rumors that Satterwhite is suffering from a torn labrum -- a devastating injury for any pitcher -- the Tigers say no such diagnosis has been made.

He was examined last week by famed orthopedic surgeon Dr. James Andrews. Surgery was not viewed as being initially necessary, although the possibility has not been ruled out.

"He has a shoulder problem, and after seeing Dr. Andrews last week, has been directed to rehab," Dave Dombrowski, the Tigers' president and general manager, said in an e-mail Monday morning. "He will not be available for Opening Day, and I am not sure when he will be pitching."

Satterwhite, 23, is a right-hand reliever who was the Tigers' second-round draft pick in 2008 from the University of Mississippi. He pitched in three Grapefruit League games for the Tigers and had a 3.00 earned-run average.

Satterwhite told team trainers after his last outing that he had pain beyond the normal tightness or soreness pitchers typically experience during spring camp.

"They're looking at it as a strain," said Dan Lunetta, the Tigers' director of minor league operations. "Time will tell. Doctors want to remedy this with an aggressive rehab program before they have to opt for the consideration of surgery."

Satterwhite was twice placed on the disabled list in 2009 during his first stint at Erie. He pitched in 34 games for the Seawolves and had a 3.47 ERA with 12 saves.

He was voted by opposing managers in 2009 as having the best fastball of any pitcher in the Eastern League.
