| CLEVELAND -- Statistically, Rick Porcello's second wind started here a month and a half ago. He's hoping it continues Wednesday. Porcello stepped to the mound at Progressive Field on Aug. 1 looking all of a 20-year-old rookie. He had allowed 19 earned runs on 30 hits over 18 2/3 innings in his previous four starts, raising his ERA to 4.62, and he hadn't lasted six innings in a game in six starts since mid-June. An extended rest around the All-Star break didn't help, and there were serious questions whether he was running out of gas. That wasn't it, Porcello said. He had the energy to last deep into games, but his first pitches were his big concern. "I remember the starts previous to that, I was struggling to get ahead of hitters," Porcello recalled Tuesday at the scene of the breakthrough. "Probably the biggest thing was getting back to throwing first-pitch strikes." It isn't that Porcello couldn't do it, but he was worried about those pitches being hit if he did. He had to put that hesitation away and pound the strike zone, whatever the consequence. "For two starts before the [All-Star] break and two starts after, I was struggling to throw strikes early and throw strikes with all my pitches," Porcello said. "I know I can do it. It's just that instead of worrying whether guys are going to jump on it or if I make a bad pitch, I'm just going to throw it and see what happens. By not throwing strikes early in the count, I was putting pressure on myself to make a pitch [on] 2-0 or 2-1 [counts]. You're not going to be successful up here [doing that]." Eight innings of one-run ball later against the Indians, Porcello had a no-decision, but a major step forward. More than two-thirds of his pitches, 63 of 93, went for strikes in an impressively efficient outing. Eleven of those strikes were called as Indians hitters waited their way into outs, though just three were strikeouts. His lone walk to lead off the opening inning was one of just a trio of three-ball counts he encountered. Turning point or not, Porcello has rolled from there. His 4-2 record and 3.51 ERA over his last 10 starts, beginning in Cleveland, has given his season new life and given the Tigers a pitching boost. By getting back to the basics of working ahead in the count, he has been able to progress to more of a power arsenal, using four-seam fastballs to set up his sinker. "Whether I'm throwing a first-pitch sinker or a four-seamer, whatever it is, you want to make sure that it's a strike," Porcello said. With three starts left in his regular season and the Tigers progressing toward a postseason berth, he's arguably Detroit's best-performing starter not named Justin Verlander. He's also building strong consideration for the AL Rookie of the Year Award. If he can beat the Indians Wednesday, he'll have his 14th win of the year. His ability to observe and make adjustments is one of several qualities in his favor putting him in the race. "He has more ability than most people," manager Jim Leyland said, "and he has a better head on his shoulders than most people, particularly for a young age. So when you combine all those things, you have Rick Porcello. He's going to have some growing pains yet, but that's pretty good." ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Pitching matchupDET: RHP Rick Porcello (13-9, 4.22 ERA)For a 20-year-old rookie in just his second full season of professional baseball, the numbers on Porcello since August have been like a fresh start -- a 3.51 ERA, .232 batting average against, and a .626 OPS in his last 10 starts. That includes six innings and three runs allowed in a defeat in his last outing on Friday at Minnesota, where his offense was held scoreless. That stretch run began with eight innings of one-run ball August 1 at Cleveland, where he returns. CLE: RHP Justin Masterson (4-8, 4.49 ERA) After allowing just one earned run through six innings in his previous two starts, Masterson struggled in his most recent start against the A's, surrendering five runs on six hits and four walks while striking out six through just four innings. Masterson attributed his less-than-stellar outing to his inability to locate his sinker, which proved especially costly when it resulted in a three-run homer off the bat of Kurt Suzuki. Still adjusting to his role as a starter after playing the reliever role in Boston until being traded July 31, Masterson will look to bounce back against the Tigers. In two games (3 1/3 combined innings) this season, he has allowed just two hits and one walk while striking out six against Detroit. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Tidbits...Triple-A Toledo second baseman Scott Sizemore and Class A West Michigan left-hander Casey Crosby have been selected the Tigers' Minor League Player and Pitcher of the Year, respectively. Sizemore, an All-Star Futures Game participant, batted .308 with 39 doubles, 17 home runs, 66 RBIs and 21 stolen bases between Toledo and Double-A Erie. Crosby went 10-4 with a 2.41 ERA for the Whitecaps, striking out 117 batters over 104 2/3 innings. ... Indians third baseman Jhonny Peralta is 3-for-8 off Porcello with two RBIs. ... Adam Everett has three strikeouts in as many at-bats against Masterson. ...
