| GDT: 9/8/09 - DET (75-61) at KC (51-85) - 8:10 p.m. ET --- AT --- Tigers look to equal, pass '06 squadDetroit (75-61) at Kansas City (51-85), 8:10 p.m. ETBy Alden Gonzalez / MLB.com09/06/09 8:05 PM ET ST. PETERSBURG -- Jim Leyland isn't a proponent of comparing teams, players or really any two things throughout baseball's long history. So when asked to compare the 2006 Tigers that made it to the World Series to his current Detroit crop, the skipper usually brushes it off. "I like for everybody on my team to have their own identity," Leyland said. "This is 2009. We're fighting our [butts] off, we're having a decent year, obviously -- a little bit better than decent, to this point, in the standings. But we're just playing, and that's what I want them to do -- I want them to enjoy it. I don't want them to worry about anything." There are some obvious similarities between the two clubs, mostly that guys like Curtis Granderson, Brandon Inge, Placido Polanco, Magglio Ordonez, Carlos Guillen, Jeremy Bonderman, Nate Robertson and Justin Verlander are still here. But this year's Tigers team would have to win 20 of its next 26 games to match the 95 victories of the '06 group. Statistically speaking, the '06 Tigers finished eighth in the Majors in runs, sixth in homers and 10th in batting average. Going into Sunday, this year's group was 16th in runs, 9th in homers and 20th in batting average. The '06 Tigers' pitchers sported the best overall ERA (3.84) and starters ERA in the big leagues, while the bullpen ranked fourth. Starting pitching could also be considered this club's strength, but its overall 4.16 ERA was ninth in the big leagues, and the starters' was 11th going into Sunday. In addition, the bullpen's mark ranked 18th. "That team, record-wise, was better than this team," Granderson said. "Offensively we were better than this team, overall pitching, I think, at least from a recognition standpoint, was better -- we had new faces with Verlander and [Joel] Zumaya. So if anything, that team was better than this team." Time will ultimately tell, obviously. But all of the Tigers' past six wins have been decided by three runs or fewer. And that's a trait Robertson feels this club shares with the one of three years ago. "We've won a lot of games where the score was low," Robertson said. "We won a lot of games where it's by one or two, and we won a lot of games coming back. So those are three things right there that tie into '06." Detroit's six-game lead in the division is comfortable right now. But 13 of their past 26 games -- including the final 10 -- will come against the two teams chasing them in the American League Central, the Indians and White Sox. And considering the AL Wild Card winner likely isn't coming out of their division this year, a stronger finish will probably be necessary. "It's going to be tough," Robertson said. "It's going to be tough the rest of the way. We've got some tough baseball coming up." ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Pitching matchupDET: RHP Rick Porcello (12-8, 4.18 ERA)Porcello became just the second Major League pitcher since 1988 to win a dozen games in a season before his 21st birthday, joining Felix Hernandez thanks to a solid performance on Wednesday against the Indians. He held Cleveland to two runs over seven-plus innings in a remarkably efficient performance. Porcello has used his four-seam fastball well to set up his sinker as a great out pitch over his past few starts, a trend that should continue in Kansas City. KC: LHP Bruce Chen (1-6, 5.24 ERA) Chen, a left-hander trying to make an impression in a comeback year from Tommy John surgery, gets another shot as a replacement for Brian Bannister. The Royals are skipping Bannister this time as he gets a medical evaluation for shoulder fatigue which stopped him after 1 1/3 innings last Wednesday at Oakland. Chen saved the day in that game, pitching four solid innings to give the other relievers a needed rest. Chen has made eight starts, the last Aug. 6 in an 8-6 win over the Mariners -- his first big league victory in almost four years. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Tidbits... Zack Greinke's next turn in the rotation is supposed to come in the series finale against the Tigers on Thursday. But considering his high pitch counts and innings total this season, Royals manager Trey Hillman said he might give him an extra day or two of rest, meaning Detroit could miss him in its three-game series in Kansas City. ... Edwin Jackson's win on Sunday was only his second in 10 road starts since June 11. ... Major League Baseball is investigating Fernando Rodney's heave of a baseball into the Tropicana Field press box after converting a save on Friday night, according to The Detroit Free Press. The throw didn't hit anybody, but the Tigers' closer could face a fine. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ To track MLB play-by-play, to help post GDT outcomes: http://m.mlb.com/scores/On the Internet MLB.TV Gameday Audio• Gameday• Official game notesOn television • On radio• • XM Channel Schedule• Direct TV Extra Innings Schedule------------------------------------------------------------------------ Up next (Probable Pitchers)• Monday: Off-day
