| GDT: 6/19/09 - DET (35-31) vs MIL (37-29) - 7:05 p.m. ETTime to come out of your cocoon, toothless Tigers, and hit like big beautiful Tigers! --- vs --- Tigers happy to head home to DetroitDetroit (35-31) vs. Milwaukee (37-29), 7:05 p.m. ETBy Nate Latsch / Special to MLB.com06/19/09 1:28 AM ET ST. LOUIS -- Tigers manager Jim Leyland admitted his club's 5-6 record on its recent 11-game road swing wasn't what he was looking for when they started the trip with a doubleheader on June 8 in Chicago against the White Sox. But, after defeating the Cardinals at Busch Stadium in the finale of a three-game series in St. Louis, the trip wasn't a total loss either. Still, the Tigers return home for two three-game series with the Brewers and Cubs as a team trying to get the lineup going more consistently to go with a pitching staff anchored by three right-handers (Justin Verlander, Rick Porcello and Edwin Jackson) who have racked up a combined 21 victories already. "I think it was just good for us to get back on track and come home with a win and try to put together a good homestand and not have a sweep kind over hanging over our heads," Porcello said after earning his eighth win with Thursday's 6-3 victory over the Cardinals. "I think in that regard it was good for our team. It is definitely good to get out of here with a win." Before the final game in St. Louis, Leyland talked to reporters about his team's struggles during its four-game losing streak not being as serious as some may perceive. "We're in first place and everybody all of a sudden seems to be throwing a cloth over us and I disagree with that," Leyland said. "I think we're going through a little bit of a tough time. If we continue to hit like this we won't be, but we are in first place. I don't think it's the end of the world. I have a lot of confidence in this team. I think we have a good ballclub and I like it very much. "I'm not really as disappointed as everybody else is. I don't like to lose three games in a row, four games or whatever it is, but it's not the end of the world. The way I look at it, six days ago people were talking about, 'Oh my God, the Tigers went into Chicago and won three out of five.' Six days later, they're saying, 'Oh, my God, the Tigers have all these issues.' Every team has issues. Every team has issues. I like our team." ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Pitching matchupDET: RHP Armando Galarraga (3-7, 5.56 ERA)Galarraga is 0-7 in his last nine starts since going 3-0 in April, and after giving up four runs on eight hits in two-plus innings Saturday at Pittsburgh, he has a confidence problem. His problems have centered on the early innings, including the four-run second inning the Pirates put up against him. His location is off from last year, but his aggressiveness seems to have suffered the most. MIL: RHP Braden Looper (5-3, 4.62 ERA) This was supposed to be left-hander Manny Parra's turn in the rotation, but two off-days in the span of a week eliminated the need for a fifth starter until June 28 and allowed the Brewers to send the struggling Parra to the Minor Leagues. That means Looper will be working on regular rest against the Tigers. He has faced them eight times, including two starts, and is 3-1 against Detroit despite a 6.89 ERA. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Tidbits...With his victory over the Cardinals on Thursday, Porcello became the eighth American League pitcher to win eight games already this season. ... The rookie right-hander has allowed just two earned runs in his last two starts, both victories. ... Placido Polanco's solo home run in the eighth inning against reliever Jason Motte was his second of the season and first since May 27 at Kansas City. ... The first two batters in the lineup on Thursday, Curtis Granderson and Polanco, accounted for four hits and three runs. The first four batters of the lineup, including Miguel Cabrera and Marcus Thames, accounted for five of the team's six runs. ... The Tigers' three relievers on Thursday, Bobby Seay, Brandon Lyon and Francisco Rodney, allowed just one hit over their combined 3 1/3 innings of work, but did walk four batters. Rodney walked three batters in the ninth.------------------------------------------------------------------------ To track MLB play-by-play, to help post GDT outcomes: http://m.mlb.com/scores/On the Internet MLB.TV Gameday Audio• Gameday• Official game notesOn television • On radio• • XM Channel Schedule• Extra Innings Schedule------------------------------------------------------------------------ Up next (Probable Pitchers)• Saturday: Tigers ( Alfredo Figaro) vs. Brewers ( Dave Bush, 3-3, 5.31 ERA), 4:05 p.m. ET
