| PITTSBURGH -- Dontrelle Willis has had a cavalcade of headlines in his Detroit tenure, including his Tigers debut, his work in the Minors, his Major League return, his season-opening stint on the disabled list, his return again, his scoreless performance for six-plus innings and his struggle to follow that up. Yet, in one aspect, Sunday is arguably the most anticipated outing for Willis since the Tigers traded for him a year and a half ago. At long last, the D-Train gets to hit again. In the big picture, it's a sidelight at best to the Tigers' series finale against the Pirates at PNC Park. But considering Rick Porcello drove in the runs that allowed his seven innings of one-run ball to hold up against the Pirates on Friday night, it's nothing to sneeze at, given how Detroit's offense has been struggling lately. Even his manager likes to smile about it. When Jim Leyland confirmed that Willis will stay in the rotation, he referenced it. "I hope he pitches well," Leyland said on Wednesday in Chicago, "because I want to see him hit." Willis' last Major League at-bat came in the Marlins' finale to the 2007 season. It was a line-drive triple deep down the right-field line off Orlando Hernandez in the top of the third inning, and it extended his hitting streak to four games. Technically, that streak is still active, since he hasn't had so much as a plate appearance in a regular-season game since. His last live-game at-bat was a Spring Training appearance against the Braves at Disney's Wide World of Sports Complex, during which he showed an almost violent swing against Tom Glavine. Willis didn't just hit safely over his final four starts in 2007; he hit a lot, going 6-for-8 with a double, two triples, three runs and two RBIs in that stretch. He ended the season batting .286 (18-for-63) with two doubles, three triples, two home runs, seven RBIs and an .856 OPS.For his career, he's a .234 hitter, going 82-for-351 in 404 plate appearances with 10 doubles, five triples, eight homers and 35 RBIs. He owns 29 sacrifice bunts, 11 of them in 2007, and he has hit into just five double plays. Yet he has never said he misses batting."I like where I'm at now," Willis said earlier this season. Of course, as Leyland also pointed out, Willis' pitching is his primary concern. With Jeremy Bonderman back on the DL and not expected back for at least a month, Willis becomes a go-to pitcher the Tigers need to keep them in the games. And at that, Willis' competitiveness kept him in his last start, against the White Sox on Tuesday, when his command remained erratic. Willis has walked five batters in each of his last two starts -- over 2 1/3 innings on June 4 against the Red Sox, then in five innings last time out. He induced just four swings and misses from White Sox hitters out of his 105 pitches. Out of all the balls they put in play, however, they hit 11 ground balls compared to five in the air, by far his best ratio in six starts this year. Willis did some between-starts work with pitching coach Rick Knapp before the Tigers left Chicago for Pittsburgh, but nothing extensive. He has taken batting practice along with other Tigers pitchers for the past few weeks, but he doesn't swing a bat outside of that. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Pitching matchupDET: LHP Dontrelle Willis (1-3, 6.60 ERA)Willis hasn't won in four starts since his 6 1/3-scoreless-inning victory against the Rangers on May 19, but his ability to compete even in the toughest of situations has earned him a spot in Detroit's rotation over a struggling Jeremy Bonderman. He overcame five walks and five hits over five innings -- and a sore knee he injured trying to make a sliding tag at the plate -- to keep the Tigers in their game against the White Sox in his last start on Tuesday. By starting Sunday's series finale at Pittsburgh, Willis gets the upshot of helping his own cause by batting for the first time in his Tigers tenure. PIT: RHP Ross Ohlendorf (5-5, 4.82 ERA) Ohlendorf is looking to break a four-start winless streak, including back-to-back no-decisions. In his last start, Tuesday night in Atlanta, he pitched six strong innings -- he said it was as well as he had thrown all season -- and left with the lead, but got a no-decision when the bullpen could not hold the lead in a 4-3 loss. He credited improved balance after having worked with pitching coach Joe Kerrigan. Ohlendorf has no record against Detroit and has only faced them once, April 29 last season, as a member of the Yankees. He threw 3 1/3 shutout innings, allowing one hit, walking one and striking out five. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Tidbits...The Tigers and Pirates will wear throwback jerseys on Sunday to commemorate the 100th anniversary of their matchup in the 1909 World Series. The Tigers will wear cream-colored jerseys that feature the old English D and only button down about halfway. ... Curtis Granderson will be back in the lineup after getting Saturday night's game off to rest, his first game out of the starting lineup this season. Every Tigers player has now had at least one game off. ... Reliever Zach Miner has induced two ground balls for every fly ball he has allowed this season. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ To track MLB play-by-play, to help post GDT outcomes: http://m.mlb.com/scores/On the Internet MLB.TV Gameday Audio• Gameday• Official game notesOn television • On radio• • XM Channel Schedule• Extra Innings Schedule------------------------------------------------------------------------ Up next (Probable Pitchers)• Monday: Off-day• Tuesday: Tigers ( Justin Verlander, 7-2, 3.02 ERA) at Cardinals ( Adam Wainwright, 6-4, 3.49 ERA), 8:15 p.m. ET
