--- AT --- Jackson faces latest challengeDetroit (33-26) at Chicago (27-33), 2:05 p.m. ETBy Jason Beck / MLB.com06/11/09 3:42 AM ET CHICAGO -- Now it's Edwin Jackson's turn. After Justin Verlander went the distance to outduel John Danks and the White Sox on Wednesday night, Tigers manager Jim Leyland will have just about his entire bullpen back at or near full strength for Thursday afternoon's series finale. But the way Jackson has been pitching, it might not matter. They're not trying to one-up each other, but by pitching back-to-back in Detroit's rotation, Verlander and Jackson are definitely building momentum, not to mention saving bullpen availability for Leyland to use with 20-year-old Rick Porcello after them. Still, the outings are becoming a little too similar. Jackson will be following up Verlander's complete-game effort in a 2-1 victory, all right. But is it Verlander's effort, or his own? After all, before Verlander's gem Wednesday, Jackson held the Angels to a run on five hits Saturday night, closing it out by striking out the side in order in the ninth on fastballs registering 98-99 mph.Even the reactions are similar. After Jackson's previous outing Saturday, Leyland said, "He was absolutely brilliant tonight, just absolutely tremendous," Leyland said. "You can't ask for anything better."After Verlander's outing Wednesday, Leyland said, "Verlander was just absolutely tremendous. I mean, you can't ask for anything more than that."Jackson's gem Saturday ended the Tigers' losing streak at a season-high four games. And so far, that's a big difference between this year's first-place Detroit squad and last year's last-place club. The 2008 Tigers had six losing streaks longer than four games, half of them by this point in the season. They didn't have a stopper. Right now, the Tigers have two. Because they pitch back-to-back in the rotation, they're not only stoppers, but momentum builders. And thus, Detroit has a chance to escape this five-game, four-day series with four wins, which would be twice as many as it had at U.S. Cellular Field in nine games last year. Thursday is the day for the Tigers' aggressive instinct to emerge with a chance to drop the White Sox 7 1/2 games off their pace in the American League Central."It's been tough for us in here," Leyland said. "It's a great team. They're the defending [AL Central] champions. We know that, and we're just trying to win as many games as we can, just like they are. [Thursday's] just another big game -- when I say big games, I'm not stretching it like it's a huge game for either team. You just try to come out and win another one. Four out of five would be absolutely tremendous."I guess what I'm trying to say is, you can't get satisfied with three out of four." It's easy to avoid being satisfied when the pitcher on the mound keeps matching the pace of the ace in front of him. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Pitching matchupDET: RHP Edwin Jackson (6-3, 2.16 ERA)Jackson pitched perhaps his best start of the year Saturday in Detroit, finishing the complete game while giving up only one run. Over his last two starts, he has thrown 17 innings and given up only one run as he continues to hold on to the second-best ERA in the AL. What's more, Jackson continues to eat up innings, throwing eight or more innings in three of his last four starts. CWS: RHP Gavin Floyd (4-5, 5.35 ERA) Floyd continued his pitching brilliance of late, producing his fourth consecutive quality start in a 4-2 victory against the Indians. Floyd, who retired 12 straight batters between the second and sixth innings, lasted 6 2/3 innings, allowing five hits, two runs (one earned) while striking out seven and walking one. Over his past four games, Floyd owns a 1.82 ERA with 31 strikeouts. In the process, he has lowered his ERA from 7.71 to 5.35. Floyd has experienced great success in his career against the Tigers. He is 5-0 with a 3.88 ERA and 43 strikeouts in 10 starts. The 10 starts mark the most against any single opponent for Floyd. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Tidbits... Look for Ramon Santiago to get the start at second base Thursday, giving Placido Polanco the afternoon off and pairing Santiago with Adam Everett in the middle of the infield. ... Leyland said Wednesday he plans on getting Brandon Lyon more active in the bullpen, giving him more frequent work. "He doesn't know it," Leyland said, "but he's going to be a real big key for us as we go on." ... The White Sox Paul Konerko is considered day-to-day after leaving Wednesday's game in the eighth inning with a jammed right thumb. ... Jim Thome is 5-for-8 lifetime off Jackson with a home run, four RBIs and four walks. ... Ryan Raburn is 8-for-17 for his career off Floyd.------------------------------------------------------------------------ To track MLB play-by-play, to help post GDT outcomes: http://m.mlb.com/scores/On the Internet MLB.TV Gameday Audio• Gameday• Official game notesOn television • On radio• / • XM Channel Schedule• Extra Innings Schedule------------------------------------------------------------------------ Up next (Probable Pitchers)• Friday: Tigers ( Rick Porcello, 6-4, 3.98 ERA) at Pirates ( Ian Snell, 1-6, 5.54 ERA), 7:05 p.m. ET• Saturday: Tigers ( Armando Galarraga, 3-6, 5.19 ERA) at Pirates ( Zach Duke, 6-4, 3.07 ERA), 7:05 p.m. ET• Sunday: Tigers ( Dontrelle Willis, 1-3, 6.60 ERA) at Pirates ( Ross Ohlendorf, 5-5, 4.82 ERA), 1:35 p.m. ET
