| GDT144: 9/9/13 - DET (82-61) AT CWS (57-85) - 8:10 p.m. ET--- AT --- Detroit Tigers AT Chicago White SoxMonday, September 9, 2013 U.S. Cellular Field, Chicago, IL Game Time - 8:10 p.m. EDT ______________________________________ Pitching matchup Tigers: RHP Max Scherzer (19-2, 2.88 ERA)Scherzer will make his third attempt to become the Tigers' second 20-game winner in three years. He lost his chance to become the second Major Leaguer with a 20-1 record after losing a pitching duel Tuesday night in Boston. White Sox: LHP Chris Sale (10-12, 2.97 ERA)Sale needs just one strikeout to join Wilbur Wood and Gary Peters as the only lefties in White Sox history to record at least 200 strikeouts in a single season. He also needs 12 1/3 innings for his first season of at least 200 innings. ______________________________________
PREVIEW Aces face off as Tigers, White Sox open seriesDetroit's Scherzer goes for 20th win against Chicago's SaleBy Bobby Nightengale / MLB.com | 9/8/2013 5:38 PM ETAlthough the Tigers struggled to find wins in the past week, losing five of their past seven games, no pitcher has provided more wins in baseball than Max Scherzer. In a matchup of All-Star pitchers, Scherzer will face Chris Sale in the series opener on Monday. Scherzer, who leads the Majors with a 19-2 record, picked up his second loss of the season in his last start. In seven innings against the Red Sox on Tuesday, Scherzer gave up two runs on five hits while walking three and striking out eight in a 2-1 defeat. "I pitched well," Scherzer said. "I did some really good things tonight. But I got beat on one pitch." Sale took a no-decision in his last outing, allowing three runs (two earned) on five hits in 7 1/3 innings on Tuesday. He owns a 2-1 record with a 2.66 ERA in three starts against Detroit this season, striking out 25 in 23 2/3 innings. While the White Sox, who snapped a nine-game losing streak with a win 4-2 win over the Orioles on Sunday, won't have the chance to fight for the postseason, they still embrace the role of being a spoiler for other teams. "We want to win as many games from here on out as we can," Sale said. "We might not be in playoff contention, but we have pride on the line." Tigers: Castellanos will start on MondayTigers manager Jim Leyland said he plans to start Nick Castellanos on Monday in left field against Sale. "He looks very confident in the batter's box," Leyland said. "Whether that's going to mean instant results, I don't know about that." Castellanos went 1-for-2 with an infield single in his first career start on Saturday against the Royals. • Jose Iglesias, who has been battling shin splints, was back in the lineup on Sunday and went 1-for-3 with a two-run homer. White Sox: Garcia misses game due to toothAvisail Garcia was out of Sunday's lineup against the Orioles because of a "bad tooth," and it may cost him some games against his former team. White Sox manager Robin Ventura suggested the tooth might get pulled on Monday in Chicago, and Garcia could miss a few games afterwards depending on how he feels. "He was supposed to be in there," Ventura said. "He was not feeling that good yesterday. He ought to get something done tomorrow." Garcia is batting .320 with two home runs and 13 RBIs in 27 games with the White Sox after being traded by the Tigers. Worth noting• Victor Martinez is hitting .563 with two doubles and two RBIs in 16 career at-bats against Sale. It's the best batting average among any player with at least 15 at-bats against Chicago's ace. • Sale needs one strikeout to join Gary Peters and Wilbur Wood as the only left-handers in White Sox history to fan 200 or more batters in a season.
