| GDT143: 9/8/13 - DET (82-60) AT KC (74-68) - 2:10 p.m. ET--- AT --- Detroit Tigers AT Kansas City RoyalsSunday, September 8, 2013 Kauffman Stadium, Kansas City, MO Game Time - 2:10 p.m. EDT ______________________________________ Pitching matchup Tigers: RHP Doug Fister (12-7, 3.66 ERA)Fister set a new career high in wins (12) by shutting out the Red Sox for seven innings on Labor Day at Fenway Park, overcoming three early walks to hold down Boston's offense. Royals: LHP Bruce Chen (6-2, 2.81 ERA)Chen pitched five scoreless innings before giving up a two-run homer in the sixth in a no-decision vs. the Mariners last Tuesday. He gave up six hits and had two strikeouts. Since moving to the rotation, he's 3-2 with a 2.81 ERA in 10 starts. ______________________________________
PREVIEW Chen looking to boost Royals' playoff aspirationsVeteran lefty opposes Tigers' Fister with series victory on the lineBy Bobby Nightengale / MLB.com | 9/7/2013 11:55 PM ETIf the Royals are going to continue their postseason push, they will have to beat their American League Central opponents. After Saturday night's 4-2 win, they'll have a chance to win a series against the first-place Tigers in Sunday's rubber game. Veteran southpaw Bruce Chen will take the mound for the Royals, looking for redemption after giving up six runs on eight hits in 5 1/3 innings in a start against Detroit last month. In his last outing on Tuesday, Chen was pulled after only 85 pitches against the Mariners -- allowing two runs on six hits with no walks in six innings. "I felt good, but it's not about me. It's about the team," Chen said. "I wanted to go out there, but we have the best bullpen in the American League, actually I feel like we have the best bullpen in the whole Major Leagues. These guys are professional." The Tigers will counter with Doug Fister, who was dominant in his last start. In a 3-0 win against the Red Sox on Monday, Fister gave up four hits in seven shutout innings while walking and striking out four. While the Royals still need to make up some ground in their Wild Card chase, it's already a better feeling than in past years. "I've been here for the last four years and it is very special what we're doing," Chen said. "We're trying to do everything we can to win and it's very fun. We want to keep it going, so come the end of September we will be playing and be very close or maybe ahead. You never know what is going to happen." Tigers: Iglesias gets extra day to healJose Iglesias was given an extra day to rest his shin splints in both legs, after being forced out of Wednesday's game due to the injury after five innings. "[Iglesias] could play today, but I'm going to give him another day," manager Jim Leyland said on Saturday. Ramon Santiago filled in for Iglesias for the second straight game. Iglesias is batting .296 with six extra-base hits and seven RBIs in 31 games. Royals: Getz passes concussion testsSecond baseman Chris Getz was cleared prior to Friday's game against the Tigers, though he didn't play, after passing a series of concussion tests. Getz left Tuesday night's 4-3 win over the Mariners midway through the third inning with dizziness and an upset stomach. "I haven't even really looked at the play to be honest," Getz said. "It was more of how I reacted and how I felt, and then they put me through tests and you have to pass those tests for precautionary reasons." Worth noting• Miguel Cabrera has five career home runs against Chen, the most against any pitcher he's faced. In 34 career at-bats, Cabrera is batting .441 with 11 RBIs and nine walks. • Fister is 1-1 with a 3.10 ERA in three starts against the Royals this season, giving up seven runs in 20 1/3 innings.
