Don't look now, but Tigers evolving
Detroit (17-13) at Minnesota (15-17), 8:10 p.m. ET
By Jason Beck / MLB.com
05/10/09 8:59 PM ET

CLEVELAND -- Once again, the Tigers are going to try to take momentum into the Metrodome, where they've been run out of town so many times before. For the first time in a few years, they might have the style of game to match.

It isn't exactly a dome style of play that has propelled the Tigers into first place in the American League Central, but it isn't their slugging ways of 2008, either. Detroit has won four of five since its lineup shakeup put all-around weapon Clete Thomas into the third spot, made an occasional leadoff hitter out of Josh Anderson, and had Curtis Granderson protecting Miguel Cabrera in the batting order for a couple games.

Longer-term, however, Detroit's first five weeks to the season have arguably sent a message. This is no longer a club that waits for the big home run for an offensive surge. It's a team that has been sending runners almost every realistic chance manager Jim Leyland gets, and a club that has already laid down 11 sacrifice bunts, more than a third of their 2008 total despite being less than a fifth of the way through the season. That doesn't include Ramon Santiago's two squeeze bunts last month.

It doesn't mean the Tigers will always take advantage of the fast, springy artificial turf that impacts nearly every play in Minnesota, but it should mean they won't be hampered by it.

Part of the reason is an effort to ignite a struggling offense. Leyland hasn't been shy about using hit-and-run plays as a way to get slumping hitters going. His thought process is that by forcing a hitter to put the ball in play, it takes away a lot of the pressure to try to do too much with a pitch and allows them to simplify things.

Yet the Tigers have been running far more than that, using speed to put runners in position to score without hits. The only run of Friday's 1-0 win at Cleveland came after Granderson drew a one-out walk, barely stole second on a hit-and-run play that didn't work out, then advanced to third on a well-placed groundout from Placido Polanco. While Thomas sped down the line and beat second baseman Luis Valbuena's double-clutch throw to first for an infield single, Granderson strolled home.

"I can think of about six games speed has had an impact on us winning so far," Leyland said. "That's pretty good."

On Saturday, Granderson and Jeff Larish drew back-to-back walks off Fausto Carmona, then advanced when Brandon Inge -- second on the team in home runs and RBIs -- laid down a sacrifice bunt with the corner infielders in. All Gerald Laird had to do was slap a grounder to short to drive in the game's first run.

Detroit's attempts to take extra bases have been less aggressive, yet still efficient. The Tigers have made just two outs trying to take extra bases, according to Bill James Online, while ranking average among Major League teams in overall baserunning.

Pitching matchup

GDT: 5/12/09 - DET (17-13) AT MIN (15-17) - 8:10 p.m. ET 451482DET: RHP Armando Galarraga (3-2, 4.08 ERA)
Five of the six innings Galarraga threw Thursday against the White Sox were solid, but it only took one to cause problems. The right-hander gave up five runs on three hits and two walks in the first inning. He scattered only three more hits over his next five innings. It was the second straight start that Galarraga surrendered five runs or more, and he's watched his ERA balloon from 1.85 to 4.08 in that span. Hell have his work cut out for him in Minnesota. In six career games against the Twins, Galarraga is 0-4 with a 5.23 ERA.

GDT: 5/12/09 - DET (17-13) AT MIN (15-17) - 8:10 p.m. ET 458713MIN: RHP Kevin Slowey (4-1, 5.50 ERA)
Slowey received his first loss of the season on Wednesday against the Orioles. It came under unfortunate circumstances: The game had four rain delays that totaled nearly four hours. Slowey was pulled after a long delay, giving up three earned runs in three innings. Slowey has had an interesting season. He's 4-1 but has a disappointing 5.50 ERA. He's given up eight or more hits in four of six starts, but has a superb 25-2 K/BB ratio. Next up is Detroit, a team that Slowey is 2-0 with a 5.74 ERA against in three career starts.

------------------------------------------------------------------------

Tidbits

...Shortstop Adam Everett will make his first return to Minnesota since leaving the Twins as a free agent. He signed with the club a year ago to be its starting shortstop before injuries shortened his season.
... Placido Polanco has a nine-game hitting streak, during which he's batting .306 (11-for-36).
... The Tigers took eight out of nine games at the Metrodome in 2007, but went 3-6 there last year.
... Detroit pitching has allowed three runs in 31 innings since Thursday.
