Preview Garcia's rotation job could be on line vs. TigersBy Evan Drellich / MLB.com | 4/28/2012 12:18 AM ET
Freddy Garcia is likely pitching for his job Saturday.
The right-hander gets the start in the middle game of three against the Tigers at Yankee Stadium, with a chance to give the Yanks the series win after a 7-6 victory in the opener Friday.
Drew Smyly, a 22-year-old rookie lefty, is set to make his fourth career start for the Tigers and his first in the Bronx.
With Andy Pettitte's return near, Garcia (0-1, 9.75 ERA) or Phil Hughes (1-3, 7.87 ERA) may be forced out of the rotation. Garcia will be on six days' rest after failing to make it through the second inning a week ago Saturday, in a 15-9 comeback win for the Yankees over a Red Sox team that was reeling. He let up as many runs as outs he recorded: five.
Ace CC Sabathia would have been on normal rest Saturday, but manager Joe Girardi did not want to keep Garcia away for too long. Sabathia is scheduled to pitch Sunday.
"CC was really good [pitching] on that extra day [Monday], and I talked to him," Girardi said. "This way, you don't give Freddy too much time. Sometimes you don't want to give a guy too much time."
Smyly, who has gone six innings in his last two starts and hasn't allowed more than one run in any, is excited to pitch in the Bronx.
"It probably is the biggest stage," the Arkansas native said. "I mean, I remember growing up and seeing them play in Yankee Stadium. Now you get to do it. I'm pretty excited for it -- just a little more adrenaline, probably a little bigger rush being able to pitch in New York City against the Yankees. It's just fun."
Smyly (0-0, 1.12 ERA) knows too teams will adjust to him as he gets around the league.
"The further you go, every team's going to know everything about you," Smyly said. "So you just try for consistency, getting ahead, throwing strikes. You have to get ahead or you're just shooting yourself in the foot. You've got to get ahead and then make it easy on yourself. These hitters are too good to get behind every single time. If you're working behind every single hitter, it's not going to work out."
Miguel Cabrera is 11-for-26 with four homers lifetime off Garcia, a fellow Venezuelan and a friend.
Saturday is the second game of six on a homestand for the Yankees. The Tigers are on the road just for these three games in New York, with seven games at home coming up -- after six games at home leading into this series.
Tigers: Young's availability Saturday unknownTigers outfielder Delmon Young was arrested early Friday morning after he allegedly assaulted a man and made anti-Semitic remarks in front of a New York City hotel. He was arraigned Friday evening on a misdemeanor aggravated harassment charge that entails targeting someone for his or her religious beliefs and was released on bail.
Brad Eldred is likely to start again Saturday as the designated hitter with Ryan Raburn at second. Don Kelly or Andy Dirks could start in left.
Yankees: Jeter's hit streak ends at 15Derek Jeter's 15-game hit streak snapped with an 0-for-4 game Friday, but his performance showed the team matters more than the individual. He worked a one-out walk in the ninth inning of a tie game and scored the winning run on a passed ball.
"As much as I'd like to say that was great baserunning tonight, basically all I had to do is run," Jeter said. "But that's how you win games sometimes. Be aggressive. We caught a break."
Worth noting• The Yankees have scored in the first inning in eight of their 11 wins.
• The Yankees are 13-9 against the Tigers since 2009 in the regular season and have won six of their last seven regular season home games against Detroit.

Pitching matchup[/center]
Tigers: LHP Drew Smyly (0-0, 1.13 ERA)Smyly is still looking for his first Major League win, but he has already made history. He's the first Tigers pitcher since 1918 to allow less than two runs in each of his first three Major League starts. Do that to the Yanks, and he could get a win.
Yankees: RHP Freddy Garcia (0-1, 9.75 ERA)Garcia gets the nod vs. Detroit, hoping for better results than he has shown in his first three starts. In his last start, at Boston, Garcia was chased in the second inning, battered for five runs on seven hits. His arm speed has been down this year.
