Peavy set for home opener vs. Tigers

By Evan Drellich / MLB.com | 4/11/2012 4:46 PM ET

Jake Peavy's task in the White Sox home opener on Friday at 1:10 p.m. CT is to keep in check a Tigers team that, until Wednesday, had not lost.

"I'm excited to throw the home opener," the veteran right-hander said. "To be in front of our fans against a Detroit team -- who knows -- coming in, might not even have a loss yet."

The Tigers were finally stopped Wednesday, when the Rays scored four runs in the ninth to win, 4-2. Still, Detroit (4-1), widely viewed as the class of the American League Central, brings in a potent lineup. In his career, Peavy is 2-2 with a 3.77 ERA in five starts against the Tigers.

"The challenge is always fun versus a team like that," said Peavy, whose White Sox are 3-2 after a 10-6 win over Cleveland on Wednesday. "I promise you this: that Detroit team is outstanding, but I got a pretty good handle on facing a good team there in Texas [in my first start of the season]. That lineup is outstanding as well. It's good to get your feet wet. It's good to get in a big-time atmosphere and worry about honing in on your focus and making pitches."

The White Sox have an off-day on Thursday, while the Tigers finish up a three-game series with the Rays in Detroit. Right-hander Max Scherzer gets the start for Detroit on Friday. Scherzer let up just four runs in 29 innings against Chicago last season, but also lost to the White Sox twice.

Scherzer's been battling illness, but he still plans to make his start.

"I am going to pitch Friday," Scherzer said Wednesday morning. "Being sick doesn't get you injured. If something could hurt my arm, I would be smart about it. But I didn't work hard all my life to get here and then miss a start because I was sick."

Scherzer was hit hard by the Red Sox on Sunday in his first start, lasting 2 2/3 innings and allowing seven runs. Peavy gave up three runs in six innings to the Rangers on Saturday in his first outing.

"It will be a lot of excitement, but the bottom line is channeling that energy and adrenalin you have in the right direction -- making pitches," Peavy said. "[Try] not getting caught up in anything. You worry about throwing down and away to Miguel Cabrera and [Prince] Fielder and these guys, and keeping Austin Jackson off base before they hit."

Tigers: Jackson off to hot start

• Jackson went 1-for-4 on Wednesday, with a run scored and a strikeout. He's 10-for-20 to start the season.

"He's seeing the ball real good right now, and he's putting a good swing on it," manager Jim Leyland said. "That's what he's doing. There's not a lot of rocket science to it. If you chase bad balls and you swing at bad balls outside the strike zone, you miss them. He's battling his tail off and he's fouling off some tough pitches, and then when they make a mistake, he's hit it. He's been fantastic."

• Brandon Inge (left hamstring) is expected to start at second base for the Triple-A Toledo Mud Hens again on Thursday, at home against Louisville.

White Sox: Flowers has long layoff

Tuesday's postponement kept backup catcher Tyler Flowers out of his second start, and he's doing what he can to be ready whenever called on. Manager Robin Ventura likes to use bench players perhaps more than most managers.

"Where I'm at, I have a pretty good chance if it does continue to be a week at a time, and I don't think it will be," Flowers said. "If it does happen to be, I feel like I'm in a good spot. ... [Hitting coach Jeff] Manto is really working with me on some stuff, keeping it as simple as we can to have a fighting chance in the box. I feel really good where I'm at."

Worth noting

Paul Konerko's first-inning double off Justin Masterson on Wednesday gave him 3,529 career total bases, moving him past Luke Appling for sole possession of second most in White Sox history.

Pitching matchup

GDT: 4/13/12 - DET (5-1) AT CWS (3-2) - 2:10 p.m. ET 453286 Tigers: RHP Max Scherzer (0-0, 23.62 ERA)

The White Sox scored just four runs over 29 innings against Scherzer last year, yet still beat him twice. His two wins against Chicago totaled 15 scoreless innings, but both victories were in Detroit. Still, the early spring weather could favor him.

GDT: 4/13/12 - DET (5-1) AT CWS (3-2) - 2:10 p.m. ET 408241 White Sox: RHP Jake Peavy (0-0, 4.50 ERA)

Peavy struggled through the first three innings of Saturday's 4-3 victory over the Rangers. But an adjustment in his mechanics helped him settle down over the next three and keep the White Sox in the game.

Tiger's MLB Game Notes

RECENT RESULTS:
The Tigers knocked off the Tampa Bay Rays 7-2 yesterday afternoon at Comerica Park. Collin Balester (1-0) earned the win in relief for Detroit, allowing one run in two innings of work. Brennan Boesch led the Tigers with two hits and four RBI, while Alex Avila and Andy Dirks both finished with two hits, including a triple, and an RBI. The Tigers begin the club’s first road trip of the season this afternoon with the first game of a three-game series at Chicago. The trip concludes with a three-game series at Kansas City beginning on Monday. Detroit returns home for a seven-game homestand with Texas and Seattle beginning on April 19.

TIGERS START THE SEASON WITH A 5-1 RECORD:
The Tigers closed out the club’s season-opening homestand with a 5-1 record, marking the club’s best start to a season since the team in 2010 also started with a 5-1 record. With a win today in Chicago, it would mark the best start by a Tigers team since 1985 club posted a 6-1 record.

WINNING AGAINST THE WHITE SOX: The Tigers enter this afternoon’s game at Chicago having won 21 of the club’s last 27 games versus the White Sox dating back to August 14, 2010. Detroit has won 11 of the club’s 14 games at Chicago’s U.S. Cellular Field during that stretch. The Tigers are hitting .311 (307x987) with 175 runs scored, 54 doubles, seven triples and 36 home runs during the 27-game stretch against Chicago.

DELMON DOES DAMAGE VERSUS CHICAGO: Delmon Young enters today’s game at Chicago hitting .346 (81x234) with 15 doubles, a triple, 10 home runs and 40 RBI in 63 games during his career against the White Sox. He is fourth among all active major league players with a .346 batting average versus the White Sox, while he is eighth with a .391 on-base percentage and .547 slugging percentage.

JACKSON IN ACTION AGAINST THE WHITE SOX: Austin Jackson enters today’s game at Chicago hitting .312 (44x141) with 27 runs scored, six doubles, three triples, three home runs and 10 RBI in 33 games during his career versus the White Sox. He is ninth among all active major league players with a .390 on-base percentage against Chicago.

TIGERS RELIEVERS KEEP WINNING: Collin Balester earned the win in relief for the Tigers yesterday versus Tampa Bay, continuing the trend in which all five of the club’s wins in 2012 have been posted by relief pitchers. The Tigers are the first team in major league history to win at least five of of their first six games in a season without a single win by a starting pitcher. (Source: Elias Sports Bureau)

JACKSON RACKING UP THE RUNS SCORED: Austin Jackson has scored a run in each of Detroit’s first six games of the season, marking the longest such streak by a Tigers player to begin the season since Darrell Evans did so in eight straight games April 7-17, 1986.

MIGGY HEADED TOWARDS 1,000 RBI: Miguel Cabrera enters this afternoon’s game at Chicago with 993 RBI during his major league career, seven RBI shy of 1,000 in his career. He would become the 21st active major league player with at least 1,000 RBI.

CABRERA, FIELDER FORM POWERFUL COMBO: Miguel Cabrera and Prince Fielder are among the leaders in the major leagues in home runs and RBI since the start of the 2006 season. Fielder is third in the major leagues with 230 home runs during that stretch, while Cabrera is sixth with 202 home runs. Cabrera is third in the major leagues with 703 RBI since the start of the 2006 season, while Fielder is sixth with 650 RBI.

DOTEL CLOSING IN ON HIS 700TH APPEARANCE: Octavio Dotel enters today’s game against the White Sox having appeared in 697 games during his major league career, three appearances shy of 700 in his career. He would become the 93rd pitcher in major league history to appear in at least 700 games.

INGE ON INJURY REHAB ASSIGNMENT WITH TRIPLE A TOLEDO: Brandon Inge was assigned to Triple A Toledo to begin an injury rehabilitation assignment on Tuesday. In three games with the Mud Hens, he is hitting .111 (1x9) with a run scored and three walks. Inge has been sidelined since March 30 with a left groin strain.

INJURY UPDATE:
RHP Doug Fister (left costochondral strain, 15-day disabled list on April 7),
INF Brandon Inge (left groin strain, 15-day disabled list on March 30),
RHP Luis Marte (strained left hamstring, 15-day disabled list on April 4).
RHP Al Alburquerque (right elbow surgery, 15-day disabled list on April 4).
C Victor Martinez (left knee surgery, 60-day disabled list on March 12).
