Braves dealing with embarrassing screwups

Yikes, not a good time for the Atlanta Braves.

This is a year for which many analysts predicted big things (present company included), but they're off to a mild 13-13 start -- and now are dealing with two gigantic distractions.

This week, one of their star pitchers spent time in jail, while their pitching coach should've been dropped off at the loony bin.

Last Saturday, pitching coach Roger McDowell, before a game in uber-liberal San Francisco, made an imbecile of himself by spewing homophobic comments and gestures, then -- yes, there's more -- threatened a fan/parent who took issue with his actions with kids' present, and made the idiotic comment that the ballpark isn't a place for children anyway.

After a verbal lashing by commissioner Bud Selig and the team, McDowell was placed on administrative leave Friday. And his firing could should come soon.

As if that PR disaster wasn't bad enough, late Thursday night, veteran starting pitcher Derek Lowe -- the pride of Dearborn, by the way -- was arrested for drag-racing through the streets of Atlanta, presumably after a night of drinking (he reeked of booze and failed a sobriety test at the scene). Lowe, in the third year of a four-year, $60 million deal, apologized Friday and will continue to pitch (he starts Sunday) while the case makes its way through the court system.

Except discipline to come his way eventually, too.

The Braves can only hope, though, that the silliness is over.
