| GDT: 5/2/09 - DET (11-11) VS CLE (9-14) - 3:40 p.m. ET --- VS --- Spotlight on Miner as Tigers face TribeDetroit (11-11) vs. Cleveland (9-14), 3:40 p.m. ETBy Jason Beck / MLB.com05/02/09 1:00 AM ET DETROIT -- Tigers manager Jim Leyland said it as far back as Spring Training: Zach Miner needs to pitch to get outs instead of pitching not to give up runs. He hasn't given up many runs lately, but that wasn't the point. Leyland is pounding home the message that Miner needs to be more aggressive around the strike zone. To his credit, Leyland believes he's working on it. But after relatively early exits from starters in the Tigers' last two games, they could use an efficient, deep outing Saturday, when Detroit and Cleveland renew their regional rivalry on FOX Saturday Baseball. Play-by-play man Thom Brennaman and analyst Rick Manning will call the action from Comerica Park as the Tigers try to get back over .500. A big key would be to avoid the early deficits that have marked their last few games. The Indians made Armando Galarraga pay for not pitching to contact Friday night, knocking him out after five innings. They could do the same to Miner if he drops his sinker too far out to get Tribe hitters to swing. "Do I think he's making a conscious effort? Yes, I do," Leyland said of Miner. "Do I think he's totally over the hump yet? No, but I think he's making a conscious effort." Leyland's issue on that point really is on the staff in general. He has heard plenty about the ability of hitters to work the count, and he saw the Yankees and Angels do quite a bit of that over the last week and a half. But the other half of the equation belongs to the pitcher. "In my opinion, it's pretty simple," Leyland said. "If you throw strikes, you can't work the count. The guys that can make you throw a few pitches are the guys that foul pitches off from time to time. But just by going up there and taking, you can't work the count if you throw strikes. "That seems like it's common sense to me. But there's too many pitchers in the big leagues, in all the big leagues, that pitch away from contact. That's why you have all these walks, because they pitch away from contact. Nobody will make me believe any different." He wasn't talking specifically about Miner in that instance, but it's clearly a key for him. When Miner's on, he can get it done, such as his season-opening victory at Toronto on April 8. His last start last Saturday at Kansas City saw him throw 42 of his 83 pitches for strikes, giving up as many walks as hits (three) over five innings of one-run ball as he escaped the big inning. Tigers pitchers haven't been able to escape that rally in the last three games, which has had them playing catchup for most of this week. A big effort from Miner in that direction would be huge for them. "You can't dig yourself into a hole night after night and expect to come back," Leyland said. "I think recently, with the exception of [Justin] Verlander and [Edwin] Jackson's outing, we've pitched a little defensive. And what happens when you pitch defensive, is you end up in the fifth inning with 95-100 pitches. We just can't do that." Pitching matchupDET: RHP Zach Miner (2-1, 6.00 ERA)The Tigers used an off-day to shuffle their rotation so that Miner and similar sinkerballer Rick Porcello wouldn't be pitching on consecutive days, leaving Miner with six days of rest before he faces the Indians. It also allows Leyland a little more flexibility to go to his bullpen early if he sees signs of trouble in Miner. Miner threw five innings of one-run ball at Kansas City last Saturday, but also walked three Royals and threw just 42 of his 83 pitches for strikes. He has never started against Cleveland, but owns a 1-1 record and 5.02 ERA in nine relief meetings with the Indians, walking eight batters over 14 1/3 innings. CLE: LHP Aaron Laffey (2-0, 2.41 ERA)Called up because of an injury to Scott Lewis, Laffey has been a major sparkplug for the Tribe's rotation. The Indians are 3-0 in games he starts. His ERA would rank among the league's leaders if not for him falling one-third of an inning shy of qualification. Pitching with a chip on his shoulder after losing out in the bid for the last spot in the Tribe's rotation out of spring camp, Laffey has had strong command of his sinker, and he's also using his breaking ball with more effectiveness. He limited the Twins to a pair of runs on five hits over 6 1/3 innings in a victory on Sunday. Tidbits... Tigers players and coaches will hold an on-field instructional clinic on the field prior to the game, free to kids and adults with a ticket to the game. Third-base coach Gene Lamont will work with interested students on pitching and catching, while hitting coach Lloyd McClendon, infield coach Rafael Belliard and outfield coach Andy Van Slyke will teach in their respective areas. The clinic runs from 1:45 to 2:45 p.m. ET. ... Brandon Inge has reached base safely in all 22 games for the Tigers this season, a feat last accomplished on the club by Alan Trammell in 1990. The last such streak longer in franchise history is the 30-game streak put together by Ron LeFlore to open the 1976 season. ... Jhonny Peralta is 3-for-7 lifetime off Miner. Grady Sizemore had two hits in as many at-bats against Miner last year. ... Willis pitched five innings in his latest rehab start Friday for Triple-A Toledo, holding Lehigh Valley to three runs on seven hits with two walks and four strikeouts. To track MLB play-by-play, to help post GDT outcomes:[/b] http://m.mlb.com/scores/On the Internet MLB.TV Gameday Audio• Gameday• Official game notesOn television• FOX On radio• WXYT 1270 Up next (Probable Pitchers)• Sunday: Tigers ( Justin Verlander, 1-2, 6.75 ERA) at Indians ( Cliff Lee, 1-3, 3.94 ERA), 1:05 p.m. ET• Monday: Tigers ( Edwin Jackson, 1-1, 2.25 ERA) vs. Twins ( LHP Francisco Liriano, (0-4, 6.04 ERA), 7:05 p.m. ET• Tuesday: Tigers ( Rick Porcello, 1-3, 6.23 ERA) vs. Twins ( Nick Blackburn, 2-1, 4.02 ERA), 7:05 p.m. ET
