Tigers unveil 75th spring slate in Lakeland
Phillies, Yankees, Red Sox, Braves among teams to visit
By Jason Beck / MLB.com | 11/16/10 1:29 PM EST

DETROIT -- The Tigers will celebrate their 75th Spring Training in Lakeland, Fla., with visits from the National League East champion Phillies, American League Wild Card-winning Yankees, Red Sox and Braves as part of an 18-game home schedule at Joker Marchant Stadium in February and March.

The longest-running relationship between a Major League team and a Spring Training city hits another milestone this year with 75 years, including the last 46 in a row at the Tigertown complex just north of downtown.

With Opening Day coming March 31 at Yankee Stadium, the spring schedule also gets going a little earlier. The voluntary reporting date for Major League pitchers and catchers is Feb. 13, followed by position players Feb. 18.

2011 Grapefruit League TIGERS' Schedule 7thUXUWQ
Individual game tickets for Tigers games at Joker Marchant Stadium will go on sale Jan. 8, 2011, at 10 a.m. ET. (AP)

From there, it's just a week until the Tigers begin their Spring Training schedule with their traditional opening exhibition against Florida Southern College on Feb. 25 at 1:05 p.m. ET. A day later, the Tigers open the Grapefruit League portion of their spring slate against the Blue Jays in Dunedin, Fla., followed by a rematch at Joker Marchant Stadium on Feb. 27.

Three of Detroit's first four Grapefruit League contests are against the Jays, part of five matchups overall between the two clubs. Toronto returns to Marchant Stadium on March 1 for a split-squad game, followed by another split-squad matchup in Dunedin on March 5 and one more meeting in Lakeland on March 12.

With the Tigers and Yankees facing each other to open the season, they'll have just two meetings this spring at opposite ends of the schedule -- Feb. 28 in Lakeland, then March 29 at Legends Field in Tampa to close out Spring Training. The Orioles, who host the Tigers in early April, will meet Detroit three times this spring -- March 4 in Lakeland, and March 13 and 28 in Sarasota.

The Phillies will send squads to Marchant Stadium on March 6, March 9 and March 26. The Red Sox, Cardinals and AL Central champion Twins will visit Marchant Stadium from March 15-17, part of a stretch of five Tigers home games in a six-day stretch.

Tickets this spring will be split into three color-coded levels. Tickets for premium games, known as Navy level, will range from $14-25. Mid-level games, known as Orange level, will be priced at $12-23. White-level games will be ticketed at $9-20.

Individual game tickets will go on sale Jan. 8 at 10 a.m. online at tigers.com, in person at the Marchant Stadium ticket office, or by phone at 866-66-TIGER. Full-season ticket packages are on sale now, also at tigers.com and the stadium ticket office, or by phone at 863-686-8075.

Leyland uses son as pinch-hitter in exhibition
By Jason Beck / MLB.com | 02/25/11 7:57 PM EST

BOX SCORE>

LAKELAND, Fla. -- For a brief moment in the Tigers' exhibition win on Friday, there was the sight of manager Jim Leyland and his son, Patrick, talking in the on-deck circle. It was more of a manager-player chat than a father-son chat.

Patrick was on deck as a pinch-hitter in the eighth inning, his first at-bat in a Tigers uniform, playing for his father. Jim was warning him about the sidearming reliever who had just entered the game and telling him to stay on the ball.

Once he was announced and stepped to the plate with two outs and the bases loaded in the eighth, he received one of the louder ovations of the game.

"When I went up to hit, I didn't expect really that much response," he said. "That felt good to hear that. But just trying to get into the flow of the game was a little bit of a struggle today, especially just coming in. But I was just glad to get in the game."

Leyland worked the count full, taking some sliders inside, before grounding out to short. He remained in the game behind the plate for the ninth.

Jim Leyland indicated before the game that he would try to get every player in camp into a game before some of them go back to the Minors, and that Patrick would be no different. He was the fourth catcher of the game after Alex Avila, John Murrian and Bryan Holaday.

"He did fine," the elder Leyland said. "He had a good at-bat, good two-strike approach. He was a little hyped up. He took a couple pitches, had a good two-strike approach. He put the ball in play, just didn't get it up."

Guillen ahead of schedule in knee rehab

LAKELAND, Fla. -- While Carlos Guillen joined Miguel Cabrera as the two Tigers regulars held out of Friday's exhibition, Guillen might not be out as long as previously thought. His recovery from offseason knee surgery is raising hopes for his readiness for Opening Day.

"I did get this from the trainers: Basically, according to the doctors, he was a month ahead of schedule, whatever that means," manager Jim Leyland said. "But once again, I've got to play it by ear."

In other words, don't expect Guillen to take the field in games several weeks ahead of the original plan of mid-March. Leyland reiterated that he'll wait for the go-ahead from the medical staff before making any plans for playing Guillen in games. The prognosis, though, is at least raising encouraging signs.

Guillen was pretty much a full participant in pregame batting practice Friday, taking swings as well as fielding ground balls. He also took a turn hitting ground balls to warm up Will Rhymes at second base.

Boesch displays his power stroke in exhibition

LAKELAND, Fla. -- Brennan Boesch started off his Spring Training with the same power stroke that earned him a spot with the Tigers last year. He sent a mammoth three-run home run over the batting-eye beyond center field, powering an early onslaught that sent Detroit on its way to a 17-5 win over Florida Southern College on Friday at Joker Marchant Stadium.

The first game action of the Tigers' 75th Spring Training in Lakeland saw Detroit score in each of the first seven innings, including Boesch's home run as part of a four-run third inning. The drive to near straightaway center went over the backdrop, a rough estimate of at least 440 feet.

Audy Ciriaco had Detroit's other homer, when he sent a liner out to left field for a solo shot.

Top pitching prospects Andy Oliver and Jacob Turner pitched two scoreless innings apiece to start off the game. By the time the Tigers tacked on a three-run seventh, they had built a 17-0 lead. Florida Southern avoided the shutout thanks to a five-run rally with two outs in the ninth off reliever Lester Oliveros.

The Tigers improved to 22-1-2 all-time in the annual exhibition, which began in 1979. Detroit has won five straight since a 2-2 tie in 2005.

Tigers agree to contracts with four players

LAKELAND, Fla. -- The Tigers moved closer to wrapping up their contract dealings Friday, agreeing to terms on one-year deals with infielders Scott Sizemore and Danny Worth, along with outfielders Clete Thomas and Casper Wells.

None of the players were eligible for arbitration. All but Thomas were rookies last year.

The deals mean the Tigers have 35 members of their 40-man roster under contract. Teams can renew the contracts of players not yet under agreement beginning March 2.

Quick hits

Other than Miguel Cabrera and Carlos Guillen, the Tigers' only other position player unavailable for games is catcher Rob Brantly, who suffered a scratched eye in workouts. ... Manager Jim Leyland spent Friday night in Bradenton, Fla., where he was scheduled to speak at a memorial service for Bill Lajoie. The former Tigers general manager and native Michigander passed away last December at age 76. ... Among the players in the starting lineup for Florida Southern College in Friday's exhibition game against the Tigers was Colin Kaline, grandson of Hall of Fame Tiger Al Kaline. With Al and Mike Kaline, Colin's father, in attendance, the senior second baseman went 0-for-1 with a walk. ... Austin Jackson needed one Spring Training game to rack up another running catch in the outfield gap, chasing down a drive into right-center field. He said Spring Training games provide a good test for him to track fly balls in the sun and wind. "They always say if you can play the wind down here in Florida, you can play the wind anywhere," he said.

DUNEDIN, Fla. -- The Tigers opened the Grapefruit League season Saturday afternoon with a 4-0 victory over the Blue Jays at Florida Auto Exchange Stadium.

Second baseman Scott Sizemore led the way for Detroit with a pair of hits and two RBIs while left-handed starter Phil Coke struck out one over two scoreless innings.

The Tigers opened the scoring in the bottom of the second off Toronto starting pitcher Brett Cecil. Third baseman Brandon Inge led off the frame with a double to the gap in left-center field. After advancing to third on a fielders' choice, the 33-year-old came around to score on a grounder off the bat of right fielder Casper Wells.

Cecil was taken out following the inning after having thrown 11 pitches. The 24-year-old lefty, who is expected to be the Blue Jays' No. 3 starter to open the year, allowed three hits while striking out one over two innings. It was Cecil's first outing since the 2010 season in which he led the club with 15 wins.

Detroit increased its lead to 2-0 in the top of the fourth inning off right-hander Robert Ray. Left fielder Ryan Raburn was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning and would eventually come around to score on a single up the middle by first baseman Ryan Strieby.

One inning later, with two runners on, Sizemore hit a deep fly ball to the warning track in straightaway center. Toronto outfielder Rajai Davis took an awkward route and had the ball bounce off his glove. By the time he was able to get the ball back into the infield two runners had scored.

The Blue Jays couldn't generate much offense early in the game. Their best opportunity came in the bottom of the fourth, when they had the bases loaded with just one out. Slugger Jose Bautista struck out, though, and first baseman Adam Lind popped up to end the inning.

Up next: The Tigers will start off the home portion of their Spring Training schedule Sunday with a 1:05 p.m. ET matchup against the Blue Jays at Joker Marchant Stadium in Lakeland, Fla.

Righty Max Scherzer has said he will try to bring a regular-season intensity to his starts this spring, and Sunday will mark his first chance. Brad Penny, Joel Zumaya and Joaquin Benoit are also scheduled to pitch for Detroit.

Tigers post second straight shutout over Jays
By Jason Beck / MLB.com | 02/27/11 3:30 PM EST

LAKELAND, Fla. -- Brad Penny made his Tigers debut with two scoreless innings as the Tigers and Blue Jays traded zeroes on the scoreboard until Victor Martinez's sixth-inning sacrifice fly sent Detroit towards a 1-0 win Sunday afternoon at Joker Marchant Stadium.

The second matchup in as many afternoons between the two squads saw another pitching duel. Penny, signed as a free agent in January, allowed a lone single over two innings, with four groundouts, an infield popup and a strikeout. Jays starter Marc Rzepcynski kept pace with two perfect innings and two strikeouts in his spring debut.

Detroit's Max Scherzer and Toronto's Jesse Litsch followed with two scoreless innings of their own before the Tigers broke the deadlock in Henderson Alvarez's second inning of work. After Andy Dirks' leadoff single in the sixth, an errant throw from Jose Molina turned Will Rhymes' sacrifice attempt into runners at the corners and nobody out.

Martinez -- batting second in the lineup to get an extra plate appearance before leaving the game -- came through with his first RBI in a Detroit uniform by lofting a high fly ball to left. Dirks scored easily.

Tigers pitching, meanwhile, followed through with their second straight shutout of the Jays. Joel Zumaya, Joaquin Benoit and Jose Valverde pitched a scoreless inning apiece.

Up next: Miguel Cabrera will make his Spring Training debut when the Tigers host the Yankees in a 1:05 p.m. ET matchup at Joker Marchant Stadium on Monday. Justin Verlander will make his Spring Training debut against the same club he'll face on Opening Day. Rick Porcello, Ryan Perry, Daniel Schlereth and Charlie Furbush are also slated to pitch for Detroit. CC Sabathia is the scheduled starter for New York.

Tigers arms remain stingy in topping Yanks
Verlander, Porcello strong; shutout string ends at 22 innings
By Jason Beck / MLB.com | 02/28/11 4:20 PM EST

Box >

LAKELAND, Fla. -- Ryan Strieby's tiebreaking two-run single with two outs in the seventh inning off Robert Fish set the Tigers up for a 6-2 win over the Yankees on Monday in a game that featured scoreless pitching until the fifth.

Before Mark Teixeira ended the Tigers' Spring Training shutout stretch with an RBI double as part of the Yankees' two-run fifth, an Opening Day pitching preview was about as stingy as expected. Both Yankees ace CC Sabathia and Tigers right-hander Justin Verlander tossed two scoreless innings, Sabathia striking out two batters while scattering two hits. Verlander allowed a pair of walks and singles but used a good pickoff move to nab Robinson Cano off second and escape a first-inning jam before catching Justin Maxwell on a sharp curve for a big out with two on in the second.

The outings were big for both pitchers. Sabathia came to camp having lost around 30 pounds, while Verlander changed his spring routine in hopes of achieving better results in April.

Fellow Tigers starter Rick Porcello added two scoreless innings to extend Detroit's shutout streak to 22 before the Yankees got to Charlie Furbush. Derek Jeter hit a leadoff single before Teixeira sent a liner into the gap in left-center two batters later, scoring Jeter easily. Furbush regrouped to strike out Alex Rodriguez, but Andruw Jones' grounder through the middle allowed Teixeira to score despite a strong throw from Austin Jackson.

New York's bullpen proceeded to retire eight consecutive Tigers from the third inning through the fifth. Manny Banuelos used a nasty curveball to earn consecutive third strikes on Jhonny Peralta and Brandon Inge, the latter of whom walked away from the batter's box smiling in amazement.

The Tigers struck soon after, using an RBI infield single by Danny Worth and a bases-loaded walk drawn by Scott Sizemore to even the score at 2 in the sixth. Cale Iorg's solo homer in the bottom of the eighth inning made it a 5-2 game.

Tigers left-handed reliever Daniel Schlereth exited in the top of the eighth inning with what appeared to be a left hamstring injury.

Tigers Up Next: The Tigers will use their first split-squad games of the spring on Tuesday to bring out their top two pitching prospects. Andy Oliver will take the mound against the Phillies in a 1:05 p.m. ET contest at Bright House Field in Clearwater, Fla., that will be broadcast live on MLB.TV and on tape delay on MLB Network at 8 p.m. Also at 1:05 p.m., Jacob Turner will stay at Joker Marchant Stadium to start against the Blue Jays in the third Detroit-Toronto matchup in four days.

Yankees Up Next: Phil Hughes, who turned an 0-4 Spring Training into an 18-win season last year, will make his first start of the Grapefruit League season on Tuesday at 1:05 p.m. ET, when the Yankees visit the Pirates at McKechnie Field in Bradenton, Fla. It'll mark the last of three straight Grapefruit League road games for the Yankees.

Cabrera comes up clutch as Tigers beat Jays
By Jason Beck / MLB.com | 03/01/11 3:50 PM EST

Box >

LAKELAND, Fla. -- Miguel Cabrera made his first base hit this spring a big one, clearing the bases on a third-inning double that put the Tigers up for good in a 6-2 win over the Blue Jays on Tuesday afternoon at Joker Marchant Stadium.

The victory was part of a split-squad sweep for Detroit, which also toppled the Phillies in Clearwater, Fla., 6-2.

Cabrera, serving as the designated hitter for the second straight day, struck out in his first at-bat leading off the second inning. He came up the next inning with the bases loaded courtesy of an Austin Jackson single and walks to Scott Thorman and Brennan Boesch.

After Ricky Romero struck out Magglio Ordonez, Blue Jays manager John Farrell made the pitching change to right-hander Zach Stewart to face the right-handed-hitting Cabrera. After a first-pitch ball, Stewart delivered a pitch Cabrera was able to pull into the gap in left-center field. The ball bounced to the fence as Boesch rounded the bases.

Romero was charged with four runs on five hits over 2 1/3 innings.

The rally nullified an early lead the Blue Jays gained from Rajai Davis' leadoff double and Brett Lawrie's RBI single two batters later. Tigers starter and top prospect Jacob Turner settled down from there to retire the final eight batters he faced.

Up next for the Blue Jays: Right-hander Brandon Morrow will make his Grapefruit League debut on Wednesday, when the Blue Jays host the Rays at the Florida Auto Exchange Stadium at 1:05 p.m. ET. Morrow is scheduled to throw three innings after getting two innings of work last week during an intrasquad game. Left-hander Brad Mills is expected to throw two innings, while right-handers Shawn Camp, Jason Frasor and Casey Janssen will also be available to pitch.

Up next for the Tigers: Cabrera will make his debut at first base Wednesday, when the Tigers host the Astros Wednesday afternoon at 1:05 p.m. Phil Coke will make his second spring start before Detroit's late-inning duo of Joaquin Benoit and Jose Valverde takes over. J.A. Happ is slated to start for Houston, which will face Detroit four times this spring.

CLEARWATER, Fla. -- Cliff Lee made his Grapefruit League debut with the Phillies on Tuesday, in a 6-2 loss to the Tigers.

Lee signed a five-year, $120 million contract in December to give the Phillies the best rotation in baseball in recent memory.

Lee hit Tigers second baseman Will Rhymes with a pitch to start the first inning. Rhymes advanced to second on a wild pitch and scored on Ryan Raburn's triple over center fielder Shane Victorino's head. Raburn scored on Ryan Strieby's sacrifice fly to give the Tigers a quick 2-0 lead.

Lee allowed one hit, two runs, one walk, one wild pitch, struck out three batters and hit one batter in two innings.

Kyle Kendrick, who is looking for a spot in the Phillies' bullpen, replaced Lee in the third, and tossed two scoreless innings.

Second baseman Josh Barfield got the Phillies' first hit with one out in the third inning, when he doubled against Tigers left-hander Andy Oliver. Barfield scored on Jimmy Rollins' single to left field to cut the Tigers' lead to 2-1.

Up next for the Phillies:
Right-hander Roy Oswalt makes his Grapefruit League debut with the Phillies on Wednesday afternoon at 1:05 p.m. ET against the Baltimore Orioles at Bright House Field. Oswalt is the only remaining Philadelphia starter yet to have pitched in a Grapefruit League game.

Up next for the Tigers: Miguel Cabrera will make his debut at first base Wednesday, when the Tigers host the Astros at 1:05 p.m. Phil Coke will make his second spring start before Detroit's late-inning duo of Joaquin Benoit and Jose Valverde take over. J.A. Happ is slated to start for Houston, which will face Detroit four times this spring.

Coke goes three innings in Tigers' loss
Former reliever strikes out four; Avila plates a run with single

LAKELAND, Fla. -- Hunter Pence's RBI single and stingy pitching from J.A. Happ and the Astros' bullpen helped Houston end the Tigers' unbeaten spring with a 6-3 win on Wednesday at Joker Marchant Stadium.

While Astros starter J.A. Happ held down Detroit's offense for two innings, Pence's ground ball through the left side gave Houston a first-inning lead off Tigers starter Phil Coke. Pence plated T.J. Steele following his leadoff double down the left-field line. Drew Locke's leadoff walk and steal off former Astros closer Jose Valverde in the fifth set Locke up to score on a double play.

Danny Worth's double and Alex Avila's RBI single halved Houston's advantage in the sixth inning, but Sergio Escalona induced a double-play ground ball from the speedy Austin Jackson to prevent further damage.

Happ, making his first start of the spring, and Ross Wolf pitched two scoreless innings apiece, each allowing one hit. Coke took the loss in his second spring outing, tossing three innings of one-run ball while striking out four.

Pence added a triple -- his second of the spring -- to lead off the sixth inning.

Up next for the Tigers: Miguel Cabrera will continue to work on his timing at the plate on Thursday, when he joins the Tigers at Disney's Wide World of Sports complex for a 1:05 p.m. ET game against the Atlanta Braves. Max Scherzer is scheduled to make the start for Detroit opposite former Tigers righty Jair Jurrjens. Ryan Perry, Robbie Weinhardt, Brendan Wise, Adam Wilk and Alberto Alburquerque are slated to pitch in relief. Aside from MLB.TV, the game is scheduled to air on ESPN, serving as Detroit's first national telecast of the spring season.

Up next for the Astros: Nelson Figueroa, one of five candidates for the fifth spot in Houston's starting rotation, will make his first start of the spring when the Astros play host to the Florida Marlins on Thursday afternoon at 1:05 at Osceola County Stadium. He's expected to pitch two innings. Henry Villar, Enerio Del Rosario, Fernando Rodriguez, Aneury Rodriguez, Lance Pendleton and Wesley Wright are also scheduled to pitch.

Boesch, Scherzer shine in Tigers' loss

LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. -- Matt Young's two-out single off Chris Oxspring in the ninth inning scored Wilkin Ramirez and gave the Braves a 4-3 win over the Tigers at ESPN's Wide World of Sports complex Thursday afternoon.

Martin Prado's double sparked a two-run eighth that gave the Braves a short-lived lead. The Tigers came back to tie the game against respected pitching prospect Randall Delgado in the top of the ninth. A Brennan Boesch single gave Clete Thomas the chance to deliver his game-tying sacrifice fly to left field.

Braves starter Jair Jurrjens retired each of the first seven batters he faced before Boesch damaged him with a long third-inning homer that sailed over the television production trucks located beyond the right-field wall. Austin Jackson kept things going in the two-run third with a two-out double that put him in position to score on Will Rhymes' RBI single.

Tigers starter Max Scherzer allowed just one hit in his three scoreless innings. The hard-throwing right-hander escaped trouble after Eric Hinske produced a two-out single that gave the Braves runners at first and second in the second inning.

Jurrjens allowed two earned runs and three hits in three innings. Strengthening his bid to serve as the Braves' closer, Jonny Venters recorded a strikeout in his one scoreless inning. He has allowed just one hit in three scoreless innings during the exhibition season.

Playing his first game at third base since tearing his left anterior cruciate ligament on Aug. 10, Chipper Jones ended the top of the first by ranging to his right and making a strong throw to retire Magglio Ordonez. The veteran third baseman also singled and scored in the fourth inning on Freddie Freeman's bloop single.

Up next for the Braves:
The first split-squad games of the season will set the stage for Mike Minor and Brandon Beachy to continue their battle for the rotation's fifth spot in two different places. Minor is scheduled to record three innings Friday against the Blue Jays at Disney at 1:05 p.m. ET. Beachy is also slated to go three against the Nationals in Viera, Fla., at 1:05 p.m. Top closer candidate Craig Kimbrel is also scheduled to pitch in Viera.

Up next for the Tigers: Detroit returns to Lakeland, Fla., where lefty relief candidates Brad Thomas, Fu-Te Ni and Charlie Furbush are all on the scheduled pitching docket against the Orioles. Rick Porcello will make the 1:05 p.m. ET start opposite Jake Arrieta. MLB.com's Gameday Audio will have the Tigers broadcast, as will AM 1270 in Detroit.

Porcello nearly flawless but Tigers lose to O's
By Jason Beck / MLB.com | 03/04/11 3:50 PM EST

Box >

LAKELAND, Fla. -- Rick Porcello has plenty of innings left before he's ready for the start of the season, but he looked ready for his first regular-season opponent. His three scoreless innings on one hit put the Tigers in command early, but Nolan Reimold's three-run homer in the sixth inning powered the Orioles ahead for a 6-2 victory Friday afternoon at Joker Marchant Stadium.

Cesar Izturis' third-inning bloop single down the left-field line was the lone hit off Porcello, who retired the first eight batters he faced. Five of the sinkerballer's nine outs came on ground balls. He's slated to make his first regular-season start April 4 in Baltimore.

The Orioles busted out against lefty prospect Charlie Furbush, who paid for uncharacteristic command problems. After Furbush stranded two runners he walked in the fifth, a leadoff single from Randy Winn and a walk to Brendan Harris immediately put him back in trouble in the sixth. He regrouped to retire Felix Pie and Jake Fox, but Reimold turned on a pitch and sent it into the stiff wind blowing to left for his second homer of the spring.

That same wind and a sunny sky helped Detroit take the lead in the opening inning. After Andy Dirks doubled, Brennan Boesch hit what looked like an inning-ending pop fly that became an RBI single when O's shortstop Nick Green lost it in the sun. It was the lone blemish for Orioles starter Jake Arrieta, who scattered two hits and two walks in as many innings.

Up next for the Orioles: The O's return home to Ed Smith Stadium in Sarasota, Fla., where they play host to American League East rival Boston for the first time this spring at 1:05 p.m. on Saturday. Brad Bergesen will make his second Grapefruit League start and will be followed by a group that includes Mark Hendrickson, Michael Gonzalez, Jim Johnson and Clay Rapada.

Up next for the Tigers: Detroit divides into split squads for the second time in five days, this time for road trips in opposite directions. Miguel Cabrera, Brandon Inge, Austin Jackson and Ryan Raburn will be among the Tigers making the drive west to Dunedin, Fla., with top prospect Jacob Turner for a 1:05 p.m. ET matchup with the Blue Jays. At the same time, Justin Verlander will be in Kissimmee, Fla., to make his second Spring Training start with a 1:05 p.m. ET game against the Astros at Osceola County Stadium. Magglio Ordonez, Victor Martinez, Boesch and Jhonny Peralta will join him. Both games will be on MLB.com Gameday Audio, while the Blue Jays matchup will be over the air on 97.1 FM and AM 1270 in Detroit.

Turner's scoreless outing highlight for Tigers
By Jason Beck / MLB.com | 03/05/11 3:18 PM EST

Box >

DUNEDIN, Fla. -- Jacob Turner tossed three scoreless innings in his third Spring Training start, outpitching fellow top pitching prospect Kyle Drabek in the matchup of young arms before Brett Lawrie's three-run homer set loose a six-run Jays rally in the eighth inning for a 7-4 win over the Tigers on Saturday afternoon.

Four days after Turner beat Toronto with three innings of one-run ball in Lakeland, Fla., he looked even better in the rematch, utilizing his sinker and changing speeds to induce ground balls on top of three strikeouts. He allowed just two balls in play to escape the infield, and all three hits he allowed were ground-ball singles.

By the time Adam Lind singled in Lawrie to put the Jays on the scoreboard in the sixth, the Tigers appeared to be comfortably in front. Alex Avila followed up Austin Jackson's leadoff double with a ground ball through the right side in the first, easily scoring Jackson. Drabek settled down with a double play before retiring the side in the second, but Ryan Raburn's RBI double in the sixth, Miguel Cabrera's sacrifice fly one batter later, and Casper Wells' solo shot in the seventh added to the Detroit total.

In the eighth, Jonathan Diaz's leadoff single and an Anthony Gose walk brought up Lawrie as the tying run against Brayan Villarreal, whose scoreless spring quickly came to an end with Lawrie's tape-measure drive to left. Two more singles allowed Toronto to pull ahead when Gustavo Nunez couldn't handle a potential double-play grounder, the first of back-to-back Nunez errors.

Up next for the Blue Jays: Left-hander Ricky Romero will be making his second start of the spring when the Blue Jays visit the Pirates at 1:05 p.m. ET on Sunday afternoon. Romero made his Grapefruit League debut against the Tigers and allowed four runs on five hits and two walks over 2 1/3 innings. The likely Opening Day starter for Toronto threw almost exclusively sinkers during his first outing, as he continues to try and perfect the pitch prior to the start of the regular season.

Up next for the Tigers: After split-squad road games Saturday, the Tigers reunite at Joker Marchant Stadium on Sunday behind Phil Coke in his third spring start, against the Phillies at 1:05 p.m. ET. Duane Below, Ryan Perry, Jose Valverde, Lester Oliveros and Brad Thomas are also slated to pitch for Detroit opposite Philadelphia starter Kyle Kendrick. The game will be broadcast on MLB.com Gameday Audio and over the air in Detroit on 97.1 FM and AM 1270.

Verlander, V-Mart propel Tigers past Astros
By Brian McTaggart / MLB.com | 03/05/11 3:45 PM EST

KISSIMMEE, Fla. -- Justin Verlander threw 3 2/3 scoreless innings and Victor Martinez and Andy Dirks each drove in two runs to lead the Detroit Tigers past the Astros, 5-0, in Grapefruit League play Saturday afternoon at Osceola County Stadium.

Verlander, making his second start of the spring, struck out three batters and allowed three hits before being removed from the game when he hit his limit of 55 pitches. He allowed singles in the first, second and fourth innings, and retired the Astros in order in the third inning.

Martinez ripped a two-out, two-run double to left field in the fourth to score Will Rhymes and Brandon Inge, and Dirks hit a two-out, two-run triple to right field in the sixth to score Ryan Strieby and Jhonny Peralta to make it 4-0.

Astros starting pitcher Wandy Rodriguez, roughed up in his first outing of the spring, gave up three hits and two runs in three innings. He coasted through 2 2/3 innings before the Tigers rallied for a pair of runs. He gave up a two-out single to Rhymes, walked Inge, and watched Martinez send both home with his double.

"I threw a lot of balls [the other day] and today I concentrated on throwing a lot of strikes," Rodriguez said.

Andy Oliver pitched two innings in relief, retiring all six batters he faced in order in the sixth and seventh innings. Oliver struck out Clint Barmes, Hunter Pence and Carlos Lee -- the heart of the Astros' batting order -- swinging in the sixth.

Up next for the Astros: The New York Yankees make their only visit of the spring to Osceola County Stadium at 12:05 p.m. CT on Sunday. Brett Myers, who's expected to be the Astros' Opening Day starter, will make his second start of the spring after throwing two scoreless innings Tuesday against the Braves. Also scheduled to pitch for the Astros: Brandon Lyon, Jeff Fulchino, Fernando Abad, Mark Melancon, Lance Pendleton, Wesley Wright and Aneury Rodriguez.

Coke sharp in Tigers' walk-off win over Phillies
Lefty allows solo homer in four frames; Thorman plates winner
By Jason Beck / MLB.com | 03/06/11 3:27 PM EST

LAKELAND, Fla. -- Solo home runs from John Mayberry Jr. and Bryan Holaday provided the lone scoring until Scott Thorman's walk-off RBI single in the bottom of the ninth, sending the Tigers to a 2-1 win over a Phillies split squad on Sunday afternoon at Joker Marchant Stadium.

Mayberry's first home run of the spring was the only damage off Tigers starter Phil Coke over four innings in his third Spring Training start. Coke fell behind on a 3-0 count before Mayberry sent a 3-1 pitch into a breeze blowing out to right field. Philadelphia's other three hits off Coke were all singles, two of them by Wilson Valdez.

Phillies starter Kyle Kendrick held Detroit's offense to one hit, an Andy Dirks first-inning single, over three innings. David Herndon's walks to Dirks and Brandon Inge in the fourth and fifth innings, respectively, were the Tigers' only other baserunners until Holaday took Michael Stutes deep to left in the eighth inning. It marked the first home run of the spring for Holaday, a sixth-round pick in last June's First-Year Player Draft.

The game remained tied until former Tigers closer Matt Anderson, making a comeback attempt in Phillies Minor League camp, entered in the bottom of the ninth. After singles from Don Kelly and Dirks put runners at the corners with one out, Thorman turned on a 96-mph fastball from Anderson and lined it into right field.

Up next for the Tigers: Detroit makes its longest road trip so far this spring Monday, pitting Brad Penny against his former National League East foes, the Mets, in a 1:05 p.m. ET game at Tradition Field in Port St. Lucie, Fla. Chris Oxspring, Alberto Alburquerque, Lester Oliveros, Brendan Wise are among the relievers set to face New York, which will send knuckleballer R.A. Dickey to the mound for the start.

Up next for the Phillies: Philadelphia will head across the Courtney Campbell Causeway to Tampa, Fla., where they'll have a 1:05 p.m. ET meeting with the Yankees at Steinbrenner Field. Roy Oswalt is slated to make the start opposite A.J. Burnett in a game that can be heard exclusively on phillies.com.

Dirks keeps putting in work in win over Mets
Penny strikes out four while turning in 3 1/3 shutout innings
By Anthony DiComo / MLB.com | 03/07/11 3:58 PM EST

PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. -- Andy Dirks just keeps on hitting.

Trying to play his way onto Detroit's Opening Day roster, Dirks tripled once and scored twice Monday, leading Brad Penny and the Tigers to a 2-1 victory over the Mets at Digital Domain Park.

Facing knuckleballer R.A. Dickey, Dirks led off the fourth inning with a triple, later scoring on the first of Victor Martinez's two RBI groundouts. Dirks also beat out a potential double-play ball in the first inning, leading to Martinez's other RBI. Dirks is now 10-for-22 with five extra-base hits this spring.

Dickey allowed just those two runs in four innings, striking out one and walking none. His counterpart, Penny, struck out four over 3 1/3 shutout innings. The Mets plated their only run on Fu-Te Ni's wild pitch in the fifth.

"At this point, knock on wood, I feel like I'm in a pretty good place," Dickey said. "I'm throwing a lot of strikes. It feels good out of my hand. They're hitting pieces of it. I just need to be consistent with it."

Only three Tigers regulars -- Martinez, Joel Peralta and Brandon Inge -- made the 2 1/2-hour trip from Lakeland, Fla.

Up next for Tigers:
The Tigers return to Lakeland for the first of back-to-back home games, and they could return Magglio Ordonez and Brennan Boesch to the lineup when they host the Marlins in a 1:05 p.m. ET game at Joker Marchant Stadium. Miguel Cabrera will get a chance to face his former team. Max Scherzer, Charlie Furbush, Robbie Weinhardt, Joaquin Benoit and Ryan Perry are among the Tigers slated to pitch opposite Alex Sanabia and former Detroit prospect Burke Badenhop, the lone Marlin left from the Cabrera trade 3 1/2 years ago.

Up next for Mets: Oliver Perez will make what could be his final start in a Mets uniform when he starts for a traveling split squad against the Astros in a 1:05 p.m. game at Kissimmee, Fla. The Mets have guaranteed Perez nothing beyond Tuesday's start -- there's a chance he could wind up in the bullpen, and an even greater chance the team will cut him completely. Back home, Chris Capuano will start against the Nationals in a 1:10 p.m. game at Digital Domain Park, while Jason Isringhausen will attempt to pitch in back-to-back games for the first time this spring.

Tigers' Scherzer has rough go against Marlins
By Jason Beck / MLB.com | 03/08/11 4:25 PM EST

Box >

LAKELAND, Fla. -- Matt Dominguez's three-run home run in the third inning paced a Marlins offensive onslaught against Tigers starter Max Scherzer, sending Florida to an 9-5 victory Tuesday afternoon at Joker Marchant Stadium.

Detroit entered the day leading the American League with a 2.19 ERA this spring, but the Marlins quickly surpassed that on a day when Scherzer struggled to execute offspeed pitches and the Tigers' bullpen fell into trouble. A walk and three singles, including a bloop single from Dominguez in front of left fielder Ryan Raburn, put two runs on the scoreboard in the opening inning.

Scherzer (0-1) labored through several deep counts to get out of the first inning, then had to strand two runners to hold down Florida's offense in the second. He entered the third inning 10 pitches short of his count, but a Greg Dobbs double, Josh Kroeger single and Dominguez's second homer of the spring put an end to Scherzer's afternoon.

"I was just trying to throw offspeed [pitches] early in the count, wasn't able to do it," Scherzer said. "Fell into hitters' counts and they made me pay for it."

Scherzer gave up five runs on eight hits over 2 1/3 innings. Charlie Furbush, a potential darkhorse candidate for lefty relief or insurance starter, settled in for 2 2/3 scoreless innings before RBI singles from Clint Sammons and Joe Thurston fueled a three-run eighth.

Marlins starter Elih Villanueva, Florida's reigning Minor League Pitcher of the Year, took advantage of his first spring start to toss three scoreless innings on two hits and two walks. Former Tigers prospect Burke Badenhop, the last Marlin remaining from the Miguel Cabrera trade in 2007, struck out four over two perfect innings.

Up next for Marlins: The Marlins return to Jupiter for three games in two days, beginning with a 1:05 p.m. ET game against the Nationals at Roger Dean Stadium. Javier Vazquez will make the start opposite Jason Marquis.

Up next for Tigers: Rick Porcello will try to keep his scoreless Spring Training going into a third start Wednesday, when he takes on the Phillies in a 1:05 p.m. ET game at Joker Marchant Stadium. Jose Valverde and Ryan Perry are also slated to pitch. Joe Blanton, a brief trade possibility for the Tigers over the offseason, will make the start for Philadelphia.

Porcello's scoreless streak snapped by Phils
By Jason Beck / MLB.com | 03/09/11 3:30 PM EST

LAKELAND, Fla. -- Brian Schneider's three-run home run powered a four-run second inning off Rick Porcello, sending the Phillies on their way to a 5-3 win over the Tigers on Wednesday afternoon at Joker Marchant Stadium.

Porcello had tossed five shutout innings over his first two Spring Training starts, but after a scoreless first inning Wednesday, four consecutive hits put him in a deep hole. Raul Ibanez's double past right fielder Brennan Boesch and back-to-back singles from Delwyn Young and Ross Gload plated one run and left two on for Schneider, who got a hanging sinker and drove it into the bullpen beyond the right-field wall for his first home run of the spring.

Porcello gave up four runs on six hits over three innings. Uncharacteristically, he gave up more fly balls than ground balls. Sidearming lefty Adam Wilk continued his solid spring with two scoreless innings before former Tiger Jeff Larish homered in the seventh off Duane Below.

Phillies starter Joe Blanton overcame a couple of early runs to last five innings, during which he allowed five hits, in his third Spring Training start. Ryan Madson, J.C. Romero and David Herndon tossed a scoreless inning apiece. Detroit's Andy Dirks continued his torrid spring for the Tigers with two hits, raising his average to .500.

The crowd of 8,445 was the largest of the spring for the Tigers.

Up next for Tigers:
Detroit embarks on a two-game, two-day trip to Jupiter, Fla., starting with a 7:05 p.m. ET game against the Marlins on Thursday at Roger Dean Stadium. The Tigers will basically split up the trip, with half heading down to play Thursday and the other half Friday. Thursday's travel squad includes Alex Avila, Brandon Inge, Austin Jackson, Ramon Santiago, Scott Sizemore, Boesch and Dirks. Justin Verlander will make the start opposite Sean West.

Up next for the Phillies:
Right-hander Roy Halladay makes his third Grapefruit League start at 1:05 p.m. on Thursday against the Yankees at Bright House Field. Also scheduled to pitch are J.C. Ramirez, Scott Mathieson, Michael Stutes and Michael Schwimer. If Phillies fans see Chase Utley, it will be during batting practice. He is sidelined indefinitely with an injured right knee.

Verlander looks strong, Inge goes deep in win

JUPITER, Fla. -- Justin Verlander gave up a run, but not much else on Thursday night.

The right-hander was certainly impressive, striking out four in four innings. Brandon Inge added a three-run homer and the Tigers beat the Marlins, 6-1, on Thursday night at Roger Dean Stadium.

Inge's three-run homer off prospect Chad James highlighted a four-run fifth that broke the game open.

Verlander saw his scoreless-inning streak this spring reach nine innings before he surrendered a run. Hanley Ramirez opened the fourth with a triple to right-center, and Logan Morrison brought him home with an RBI groundout to second that made it 2-1 at the time.

Efficient and effective, Verlander threw 61 pitches with 43 strikes.

Sean West, in his first Grapefruit League appearance, worked two innings, allowing two runs on one hit. The left-hander hit a batter, walked two and struck out a pair.

The key for West is throwing strikes, and he had his moments of wildness in two innings. Of his 37 pitches, 19 were strikes.

Trying to rebound after an injury-plagued 2010, West got off to a rough start. On the third pitch of the game, he hit Austin Jackson with a pitch. Andy Dirks walked, and Scott Sizemore delivered a two-run double, but he was thrown out trying to stretch it to a triple.

For Florida, Ramirez went 2-for-3.

Up next for the Tigers: Miguel Cabrera and Albert Pujols will meet up in Jupiter, Fla., as the Tigers complete their Jupiter series with a 1 p.m. ET matchup against the Cardinals on Friday at Roger Dean Stadium. Phil Coke will make his fourth outing of the spring looking to stretch to five innings. Ryan Perry, Joaquin Benoit and Brad Thomas are also scheduled to pitch. Lance Lynn is slated to start for St. Louis.

Up next for the Marlins: Making a quick turnaround, the Marlins will be traveling to Port St. Lucie, Fla., to take on the Mets on Friday. Chris Volstad gets the start against lefty Jonathan Niese. Emilio Bonifacio, Wes Helms, Gaby Sanchez and Chris Coghlan are among the position players making the trip. Coghlan was the DH on Thursday, and he is expected to play in center field.

Cabrera revs up, leads Tigers over Cards

JUPITER, Fla. -- Miguel Cabrera snapped his early-spring offensive funk, Cardinals pitchers struggled to throw strikes and Detroit thumped St. Louis, 7-4, in a Grapefruit League game at Roger Dean Stadium on Friday.

Cabrera, who entered the game with one extra-base hit in 23 spring at-bats, doubled and homered in his first two at-bats. He drove in two runs and also drew a walk in the visiting Tigers' offensive outburst. He had been 4-for-23 on the spring prior to Friday's game.

The free pass to Cabrera, meanwhile, was one of 14 issued by Cardinals pitchers. Starter Lance Lynn walked two batters in two innings, and Joe Kelly handed out five free passes in a difficult three-run third. Lynn was reached for three hits, all in the first inning, and left with a two-run deficit. Kelly allowed Cabrera's homer but got two outs before walking five straight batters, and Detroit stretched its lead to five runs.

Tigers starter Phil Coke pitched four strong innings, allowing three hits and a walk while striking out three. The Cardinals got a runner in each of the first three innings, but double plays erased the threats in the first and second.

Detroit improved to 10-6 on the spring, and the Cardinals fell to 7-6.

Up next for Cardinals: St. Louis welcomes another American League foe to Roger Dean Stadium on Saturday at 12:05 p.m. CT, when Minnesota comes to town. Mitchell Boggs hopes to return to action after missing 10 days due to a lower back strain. He's expected to pitch in relief of Jake Westbrook, who is looking to build on a very strong outing five days earlier against the Twins in Fort Myers, Fla.

Up next for Tigers: Detroit returns home from its Jupiter sojourn for a Saturday afternoon contest with Toronto at 12:05 p.m. CT. Brad Penny will look to continue his strong spring when he takes the mound for his third start of the Grapefruit League campaign. Thus far this spring, Penny has pitched twice without allowing a run or a walk, racking up five strikeouts in 5 1/3 innings.

Sizemore's shot sparks Tigers' comeback win
By Jason Beck / MLB.com | 03/12/11 3:55 PM EST

LAKELAND, Fla. -- Scott Sizemore's first home run this spring led a late-inning Tigers comeback, capped by Ryan Strieby's pinch-hit RBI single scoring Ramon Santiago in the eighth for a 4-3 win over the Blue Jays on Saturday afternoon at Joker Marchant Stadium.

Brad Penny's second start against the Blue Jays this spring saw him hold Toronto's split-squad lineup to two runs, one earned, over five innings. Adeiny Hechavarria led off the third inning with a single and advanced on groundouts from Ryan Goins and Anthony Gose. When Penny and Alex Avila crossed signals on a high fastball that ricocheted off Avila's glove and to the backstop, Hechavarria scampered home.

Another unusual defensive sequence led to Toronto's second run. Moises Sierra led off the fifth inning with a hard-hit drive that hooked on center fielder Austin Jackson, sending him spinning to try to change his route. The leadoff triple set Sierra up to score on Goins' ground ball to short; Jhonny Peralta tried to field the ball and throw home, but dropped it.

Brandon Inge's fourth-inning sacrifice fly accounted for Detroit's lone run through six innings against Robert Ray, Zach Stewart and Henderson Alvarez before the Tigers rallied off Josh Roenicke. Sizemore, who singled earlier, led off the inning with a drive to left to draw Detroit within a run. When Andy Dirks walked and went to third on a Clete Thomas single through the middle, the Tigers had their tying run in position with nobody out.

That was enough for Dirks to score on Scott Thorman's fielder's-choice grounder to second. A Miguel Cabrera single and Brennan Boesch hit-by-pitch loaded the bases with two outs, but Winston Abreu got a called third strike past Don Kelly. Santiago put the go-ahead run back in position in the eighth with a leadoff triple past a diving effort from Sierra.

Abreu struck out Sizemore and Sean Henn struck out Andy Dirks to take away the sacrifice fly opportunity, but Strieby laced a one-hopper that skipped off third baseman John Tolisano as Santiago came home.

After five meetings over 15 days, the Tigers (11-6) and Jays (6-8) won't meet again for the rest of the spring. Detroit won four times.

Up next for Tigers:
Detroit has its final set of split-squad games for the spring Sunday, both 1:05 p.m. ET matchups. At Joker Marchant Stadium, Max Scherzer will look for a bounceback outing when he makes his fourth start of the spring, this one against the Astros. Charlie Furbush, Ryan Perry, Brad Thomas, Brendan Wise and Fu-Te Ni are scheduled to pitch in relief. Among the regulars set to stick around are Victor Martinez, Peralta and Magglio Ordonez.

Meanwhile, in Sarasota, sidearming left-hander Adam Wilk will try to keep his scoreless spring going in a start against the Orioles at the newly renovated Ed Smith Stadium. Starters making the trip include Cabrera, Brandon Inge, Alex Avila, Austin Jackson and Ryan Raburn.

Up next for the Blue Jays: Right-hander Brandon Morrow just can't seem to avoid being matched up against Tampa Bay. For the third time in as many scheduled starts, Morrow is set to face the Rays and will take the mound Sunday afternoon at 1:05 p.m. ET at Florida Auto Exchange Stadium. Morrow decided to skip his last outing against the Rays to pitch in a simulated game, in part to avoid facing his divisional rivals too many times this spring. Also scheduled to pitch on Sunday are Marc Rzepczynski, Casey Janssen, Carlos Villanueva and potentially Octavio Dotel, if he is cleared in time to make an appearance. Dotel has been out since Tuesday with a hamstring injury.

Wilk up to speed in Tigers' win over O's

SARASOTA,Fla. -- Prior to Sunday's start, Tigers manager Jim Leyland remarked that it would be a tough test for bullpen hopeful Adam Wilk, who was facing an Orioles lineup with seven regulars.

The left-handed prospect passed on all accounts, tossing three scoreless innings in Detroit's 9-1 win in Grapefruit League action at Ed Smith Stadium.

Wilk, who increased his spring scoreless streak to nine innings, allowed just one hit, a single to Vladimir Guerrero to start the second. One out later, Wilk got Luke Scott to ground into a double play to ensure he would face the minimum nine batters.

The Tigers jumped on O's starter Brian Matusz, who labored through a 33-pitch first inning and wasn't helped much by the defense behind him. Leadoff man Austin Jackson singled and scored on Miguel Cabrera's line drive off the center-field wall. Cabrera scored on second baseman Cesar Izturis' fielding error and Casper Wells, who went 4-for-4 on the day, added a solo homer in the third. The left-field blast was on a 1-0 pitch and was Wells' second homer this spring. Wells also doubled twice and had two RBIs in all.

Cabrera added an RBI single in the sixth and Ramon Santiago followed one batter later with a sacrifice fly.

"It's about the team. Everybody's got to do their job," Cabrera said of the Tigers' complete win. "Everybody has to work hard and they know what they have to do to get ready for the season. We have to go out there and work hard, and win games like Skip said. Do whatever you can to score runs."

Matusz exited after 3 1/3 innings and was charged with three runs (two earned) on four hits with two walks and two strikeouts.

"The results, [I'm] not happy about the results," Matusz said of his third spring outing. "But I'm really happy about the process. I feel like I'm making some adjustments that I need to, and I'm excited to sit down with [pitching coach Mark Connor], look at the video for this game, kind of see where I need to be mechanically-wise. I feel like I wasn't fully in my groove the whole time. And that's OK. But I'm excited for this work week."

Orioles shortstop J.J. Hardy hit his first homer of the spring with a leadoff shot in the fourth. Hardy sent Tigers pitcher Charlie Furbush's 1-0 offering into the left-field pavilion.

Up next for the Tigers: Detroit will travel to Viera, Fla. on Monday at 1:05 p.m. ET to take on the Washington Nationals with right-hander Rick Porcello slated to take the mound opposite the Nats' Jason Marquis. Enrique Gonzalez Joaquin Benoit and Jose Valverde are also scheduled to throw for the Tigers.

Up next for the Orioles: The O's will welcome the neighboring Pittsburgh Pirates on Monday afternoon at 1:05 p.m. Orioles right-hander Jake Arrieta will make his third start this spring and the game will be televised by MLB Network and MASN. The Pirates will send Kevin Correia to the mound. Reliever Jason Berken and Jeremy Accardo are also scheduled to pitch.

Ordonez finds swing with homer against Astros
By Jason Beck / MLB.com | 03/13/11 4:00 PM EST

LAKELAND, Fla. -- J.R. Towles went 3-for-4 with his second home run of the spring and an RBI single, accounting for more than half of Houston's offense in a 3-1 Astros victory over the Tigers on Sunday afternoon at Joker Marchant Stadium.

Magglio Ordonez broke out of his early struggles by lofting his first home run of the spring onto the left-field berm, but that was all the offense the Tigers could muster against Houston's pitching staff. Ryan Rowland-Smith and Douglas Arguello each escaped bases-loaded, one-out jams -- Rowland-Smith by jamming Victor Martinez and striking out Brennan Boesch, and Arguello with a double play from the speedy Will Rhymes.

That allowed the Astros to hold a lead they built early while Max Scherzer tried to settle into his mechanics. Back-to-back singles leading off the game put runners at the corners with nobody out for the middle of the Astros' order, but two called third strikes limited the damage to Brett Wallace's RBI groundout.

Towles' first RBI was a lined shot that buzzed Scherzer on its way back through the middle, scoring Chris Johnson after his leadoff walk and stolen base, and chasing Scherzer from the game. Towles struck again with a two-out, sixth-inning solo shot just over the left-field fence off prospect Jose Ortega.

Scherzer allowed two runs on five hits with three walks and four strikeouts in his fourth outing of the spring. Fu-Te Ni added a scoreless inning in his bid to make the Tigers' Opening Day bullpen.

Up next for Tigers: Ordonez will try to build on his home run Monday when he makes the trip with the Tigers to Florida's Atlantic coast for a 1:05 p.m. ET matchup with the Nationals at Space Coast Stadium in Viera, Fla. Rick Porcello will try to rebound from his last outing with his fourth start of the spring. Jose Valverde, Joaquin Benoit and Enrique Gonzalez are also scheduled to pitch for Detroit.

Up next for Astros: Nelson Figueroa will look for his third win in as many outings this spring Monday as Houston returns from its road split-squad set to host the Phillies in a 1:05 p.m. ET matchup in Kissimmee, Fla. The game will be available on MLB.com's Gameday Audio. Wilton Lopez, Patrick Urckfitz, Henry Villar and Fernando Rodriguez are also slated to pitch.

VIERA, Fla. -- Victor Martinez's two-run homer in the sixth inning helped the Tigers defeat the Nationals, 4-2, at Space Coast Stadium on Monday afternoon.

The game was tied at 1 in the sixth, when Detroit went ahead against Washington. With a runner on second and reliever Todd Coffey on the mound, Brennan Boesch singled to center field, scoring Avisail Garcia. Martinez followed, hitting a 2-1 pitch over the right-field wall to make it a three-run game.

In the ninth, Danny Espinosa hit an RBI fielder's choice for Washington, which collected nine hits.

Nats right-hander Jason Marquis pitched five innings, allowed one run on three hits, struck out four and walked two.

Detroit's first run came in the third inning, when Cale Iorg scored on a double by Ryan Strieby.

Washington tied the score two innings later, when Ian Desmond singled off Enrique Gonzalez to score Ivan Rodriguez.

Up next for Tigers: Martinez will meet his ex-teammates from Boston for the first time Tuesday when the Tigers host the Red Sox in a 1:05 p.m. ET matchup at Joker Marchant Stadium in Lakeland, Fla. Verlander continues dominating spring
Cabrera goes deep as Tigers forge tie against Red Sox
By Jason Beck / MLB.com | 03/15/11 4:10 PM ET

Box >

LAKELAND, Fla. -- Justin Verlander and Daisuke Matsuzaka dueled through their respective batting orders for three innings until Jacoby Ellsbury stepped up with a solo home run and a highlight catch, leading the Red Sox to a 2-1 win in 10 innings over the Tigers on Tuesday afternoon in front of a record crowd at Joker Marchant Stadium.

While Victor Martinez met his former Boston teammates for the first time since signing with Detroit as a free agent last November, Tuesday's headline matchup quickly became the out-for-out performances from the starting pitchers. Verlander retired the Red Sox in order the first time through the lineup, including strikeouts of three of Boston's first six hitters, and changed speeds.

Matsuzaka, who allowed 10 earned runs in his previous two starts, allowed just a ground-ball single to Martinez through three innings with three strikeouts. Dice-K's curveball to fan Brandon Inge left Detroit's third baseman looking at home-plate umpire Greg Gibson in amazement over the pitch.

Verlander had Ellsbury in an 0-2 count leading off the fourth inning when he tried to set up a 1-2 fastball. Ellsbury jumped it and sent a drive to right field for his second home run in three days. Verlander retired seven of his final eight hitters after that, but he left still trailing in the sixth.

Matsuzaka, too, encountered trouble in the fourth, starting with a Magglio Ordonez single, but Ellsbury came through with another big play when he ran down Miguel Cabrera's 400-foot drive to straightaway center field. Matsuzaka finished with five strikeouts over five scoreless innings, scattering two hits.

Cabrera exacted some revenge in the seventh when he belted a leadoff homer off Matt Albers over the left-field wall.

With the game tied at 1-1 in the 10th, designated hitter Darnell McDonald hit a leadoff homer to give Boston a 2-1 lead.

Up next for Red Sox: Boston's tour of the I-4 corridor continues Wednesday with a 1:05 p.m. ET contest against the Braves at Disney's Wide World of Sports Complex on MLB.TV. Jon Lester will make the start, followed by Randy Williams, Andrew Miller, Dennys Reyes and Matt Fox in relief. Adrian Gonzalez, Jarrod Saltalamacchia and Marco Scutaro are scheduled to make the trip.

Up next for Tigers: The biggest homestand of the spring continues Wednesday on MLB.TV when the Tigers welcome the St. Louis Cardinals for a 1:05 p.m. game at Joker Marchant Stadium. Phil Coke will face the Cards for the second time in six days after tossing four scoreless innings in Jupiter last Friday. Lefty relief candidate Adam Wilk is scheduled to make his next bid for a job, while Jose Valverde and Ryan Perry try to get their pitches into regular-season form. Chris Carpenter is slated to start for St. Louis.
