Umpire brings intrigue to O's-Tigers opener

By John Schlegel / MLB.com

It's not often that a pitcher-umpire matchup creates a buzz, but call Friday's opener of the Orioles-Tigers set at Comerica Park a nearly perfect storm.

On the mound: Armando Galarraga. Behind the plate: Jim Joyce.

For those unaware of the most bizarre and ultimately human episode in 2010: It was June 2, and it was Joyce whose blown call at first base for the would-be 27th out kept the Tigers' Galarraga from recording the 21st perfect game in MLB history, and what would have been the third in this remarkable season of pitching.

A storm of protest during and after the game, an emotional mea culpa by Joyce and a gracious acceptance by Galarraga ensued, and they met at home plate with the next day's lineup card in a display of sportsmanship.

Come Friday, Galarraga says it'll be business as usual.

"It's going to happen, anyway, sooner or later," Galarraga said upon learning of the umpiring assignments. "It'll be OK. He'll do his job. I'll do my job."

Galarraga will have his hands full with the suddenly spunky Orioles, who will send veteran right-hander Kevin Millwood to the mound in Detroit.

The Orioles have stood toe-to-toe with top competition in recent weeks and come out looking good. They might not relish the spoiler role, but the Orioles have managed to make some noise in the races with a solid stretch against postseason contenders, going 10-8 while running a gauntlet of top clubs.

Being a spoiler isn't on the agenda in Motown, where the Tigers have fallen behind in the American League Central race. But the Orioles come in as a road threat, having won six of their last eight away games, including two of three at Yankee Stadium before Thursday's off-day. They took a possible sweep into the ninth inning of the finale but lost on a walk-off homer by Nick Swisher for the defending World Series champs.

"I'll take the [series]," said Orioles catcher Matt Wieters, who homered in the finale Wednesday. "We played well these three games. We keep playing like this, we're going to be fine."

Said manager Buck Showalter: "A lot of good things happened here the last three days."

The Tigers have been hot, too. With its 6-3 win over the White Sox, Detroit took three of four in the series, moved to 6-3 in September and got its record above .500 for the first time since July 31.

Orioles: Millwood's unwanted career high
After halting a two-month wins drought with eight scoreless innings against the Angels, Millwood took his career-high 15th loss against the Rays in his most recent outing. He gave up four runs while walking five in 5 2/3 innings.

"I understand I'm going to give up hits, not going to strike out the world," Millwood said after that one. "But to walk five guys is just unacceptable."

Millwood is 2-2 with a 4.00 ERA in six career starts at Detroit.

Tigers: Galarraga responds to treatment

Galarraga experienced right elbow stiffness during his last start, against the Royals on Sunday, but he responded well to treatment and remains on track to make Friday's start.

"It was different than normal soreness," Galarraga said on Monday. "I don't think I'm going to lose any starts. I'm going to get some treatment."

Galarraga said he felt some pain while warming up, but it subsided as his arm loosened during the game. He wound up pitching five innings and allowing just one earned run, but he issued five walks, tying his season high.

Worth noting
Tigers closer Jose Valverde, who has missed the last two games with tenderness around his right elbow and forearm, said Thursday he should be fine after another day or two. If Valverde is out Friday, manager Jim Leyland is expected to play the lefty-righty matchups with Phil Coke and Ryan Perry in a save situation.

... Tigers first baseman Miguel Cabrera remains a question mark for Friday with bicep tendinitis in his left shoulder. If he can get through batting practice, though, he could be in the starting lineup.

... Tigers reliever Robbie Weinhardt will also be available after missing the last couple of games to rest.

... The Orioles are 12-18 against the AL Central thus far this season, with this three-game set and another four games against Detroit to finish off the season.

... The Tigers are 15-17 against the AL East this season, including 3-0 at home vs. Baltimore.

... Brian Roberts went 1-for-4 with a double in Wednesday's finale against the Yankees, snapping a four-game streak of multihit games -- his longest such streak since June 19-22, 2007. His career high is five straight, set twice.

Pitching matchup

TIGERS: RHP Armando Galarraga (4-5, 3.89 ERA)
Galarraga allowed just four hits and one run through five innings in his last start at Kansas City. However, Galarraga walked five, complained of elbow stiffness and said he didn't have good movement on his pitches.

ORIOLES: RHP Kevin Millwood (3-15, 5.38 ERA)
The American League leader in losses, Millwood has pitched better than his record indicates. The veteran lasted 5 2/3 innings in Friday's loss, giving up four runs on seven hits while walking five.

Rick Porcello (9-11) held the White Sox to three runs in eight innings of work to earn the win, while Ryan Perry closed out the game for his second save. Johnny Damon finished with four hits and an RBI for the Tigers, while Will Rhymes added three hits. The Tigers continue a seven-game homestand with the first game of a three-game series against Baltimore this evening at Comerica Park.

RECENT SUCCESS AGAINST ORIOLES AT COMERICA PARK: The Tigers enter this evening’s game versus Baltimore having won 12 of the club’s last 16 games over the Orioles at Comerica Park dating back to the start of the 2006 season.

HOME SWEET HOME: The Tigers continue a seven-game homestand this evening against the Orioles at Comerica Park, where the club has posted a 9-2 record in the club’s last 11 games. The Tigers are batting .323 (125x387) with 70 runs scored, 26 doubles, two triples and six home runs during the 11-game stretch. Detroit pitchers have compiled a 1.83 ERA (103.0IP/21ER) during the stretch.

STARTERS ON FIRE AT HOME: Tigers starting pitchers have recorded a quality start in 11 of the club’s last 12 games at Comerica Park dating back to August 10. Club starters have compiled a 9-1 record and 1.70 ERA (84.2IP/16ER) during the stretch.

OFFENSE ON THE UPTICK:
Tigers hitters are batting .295 (232x787) with 125 runs scored, 41 doubles, six triples and 22 home runs over the club’s last 21 games dating back to August 19. Detroit leads all American League clubs with 125 runs scored and 41 doubles during that stretch, while the club is second with a .295 batting average and tied for fourth with 22 home runs.

DAMON’S FOUR HITS LEADS THE WAY FOR DETROIT: Johnny Damon finished with a season-high four hits yesterday versus the White Sox, with each hit contributing to building a run in Detroit’s 6-3 win. Cincinnati’s Scott Rolen is the only other major league player this season to finish 4x4 (all being singles) and have each contribute to a run on July 27 at Milwaukee. (Source: Elias Sports Bureau)

ROOKIE HIT PARADE:
Tigers rookie hitters collected four hits yesterday against the White Sox, raising the season total to 443 hits by Tigers rookies. The 443 hits by rookies are the most by Tigers rookies since the rookies on the 1954 club posted 477 hits. Tigers rookies collected 590 hits in 1929 to establish the franchise record. (Source: STATS LLC)

PERALTA PICKING UP THE PRODUCTION: Jhonny Peralta collected a single and two RBI yesterday against the White Sox and he has now hit safely in 16 of his last 20 games dating back to August 19. He is batting .360 (27x75) with four doubles, three home runs and 19 RBI during the 20-game stretch. Peralta is second among all American League players with 19 RBI during the stretch, while he is sixth with a .360 batting average.

INGE IGNITES AT COMERICA PARK:
Brandon Inge enters tonight’s game against the Orioles hitting .338 (49x145) with 10 doubles, four triples, two home runs and 26 RBI over his last 42 games at Comerica Park dating back to May 30. Inge is the all-time leader at Comerica Park with 530 hits, 72 home runs and 310 RBI during the history of the park.

RABURN ON A ROLL: Ryan Raburn enters tonight’s game versus the Orioles hitting .345 (41x119) with eight doubles, 10 home runs and 27 RBI over his last 32 games dating back to August 5. He is tied for the lead in the American League with 27 RBI during the stretch, while he is second with a .664 slugging percentage, tied for second with 18 extra-base hits, is third with 10 home runs, tied for fourth with 41 hits, is sixth with a .345 batting average and tied for seventh with eight doubles.

JACKSON PILING UP THE RUNS:
Austin Jackson has scored 23 runs over his last 20 games dating back to August 20 and he leads all American League rookies with 92 runs scored this season. His 92 runs scored mark the most by a Tigers rookie since Jake Wood scored 96 runs during the 1961 season. With eight more runs scored, Jackson will become just the sixth rookie in Tigers history to score at least 100 runs and the first since Barney McCosky scored 120 runs in 1939.

INGE CLOSING IN ON 200 DOUBLES: Brandon Inge enters tonight’s game against the Orioles one double shy of 200 during his major league career. With one more double he would become the 26th player in franchise history to collect 200 doubles.

SINGLE A WEST MICHIGAN IN THE MIDWEST LEAGUE PLAYOFFS:
Single A West Michigan continues the Midwest League playoffs tonight at Lake County. The Whitecaps won 8-0 last night at Lake County to tie the best-of-three game series at 1-1. It is the seventh consecutive season the Whitecaps have made the playoffs and the 11th time since becoming a Tigers affiliate in 1997.
