Bonderman going on short rest against Halos

Tigers manager Jim Leyland has always been a fan of Jeremy Bonderman's aggressive, workman-like attitude when on the mound. Leyland is hoping Bonderman is able to bring that same mentality on Saturday, when the right-hander will be pitching on three days' rest.

After losing the series opener, the Tigers are looking to get a win on Saturday to prevent their fifth series loss since the All-Star break.

Bonderman has never pitched with just three days' rest between starts, but Leyland still has plenty of confidence he will be able to get the job done.

"We just felt like he's kind of a horse guy," Leyland said. "He's a pretty strong guy and everything. I really didn't want to do it with a young kid like [21-year-old Rick] Porcello. Bonderman would be able to take it better."

Bonderman is coming off one of his best starts of the season for the Tigers. He held the White Sox to one earned run on five hits through 6 2/3 innings on Tuesday.

"All he's got to do is give us five good innings," said Leyland, who doesn't have a strict pitch count for Bonderman. "If he's taxed, we'll get him out of there. But I think it can work out all right. I don't want to make it sound like I think I can abuse [Bonderman], but he had so many days off there before."

The Angels will likely take Scott Kazmir off the disabled list to oppose Bonderman and try to secure a series victory over the Tigers after the club lost three straight to the Major League-worst Orioles.

Kazmir has been on the disabled list since July 18 with left shoulder fatigue. But he was able to throw all of his pitches in a 35-pitch bullpen session on Wednesday. The left-hander owns a 7-9 record with a 6.92 ERA in 17 starts this season. In his last start, he surrendered 13 runs on 11 hits in five innings against Oakland on July 10.

"It's kind of seeing how I feel," Kazmir said before Thursday's series finale against the Orioles. "I feel great, so hopefully I'll be [going] on Saturday."

Tigers: Boesch does better with lineup shuffle
Rookie Brennan Boesch was in quite the slump entering Friday's series opener. Since the All-Star break, the outfielder, who protected Miguel Cabrera in the lineup, just couldn't get anything going offensively.

Boesch was in the midst of an 8-for-80 slump in his past 21 games and hadn't recorded a home run since June 27.

So Leyland opted to shuffle up the lineup on Friday. The result: A home run from Boesch in the third inning off Angels ace Jered Weaver en route to a 2-for-4 night.

Leyland said after the game that he will give Boesch the day off on Saturday.

"People probably think you're crazy, but you've got a left-hander tomorrow that can get a little bit wild," Leyland said.

"We've hopefully got him in a good groove now, so I'm going to give him a [day off] tomorrow for that reason, so we don't get him out of the strike zone a little bit again."

Angels: Hunter tossed on Friday
Angels outfielder Torii Hunter was ejected in Friday's victory after appealing a called third strike. Manager Mike Scioscia was also thrown out as the argument escalated.

Hunter's ejection capped off an impressive offensive showing. He went 1-for-3 with a mammoth 435-foot, two-run homer off Tigers ace Justin Verlander in the first inning of Friday's victory.

Hunter shifted from center field -- where he's been playing his whole career -- to right field to make room for rookie speedster Peter Bourjos. Defensively, the move seems to be paying off for the Angels. And it's sure working out for Hunter offensively.

Hunter is 8-for-16 in four games since the move and has six RBIs. Before the move, Hunter had four RBIs in his previous 18 games.

Worth noting
Weaver struck out nine to up his Major League-leading total to 171

... Cabrera went 0-for-2 on Friday with two walks, but Scioscia doesn't discredit his power. "He's right there in all of baseball," Scioscia said when asked if Cabrera is the AL's most dangerous all-around hitter. "You're talking about the [Albert] Pujolses, Cabreras. There's obviously holes you can get to if you set him up, but his mistakes seem to go farther."

... Tigers team owner Mike Illitch said on Friday that Leyland and president/general manager Dave Dombrowski will both return next season.



Pitching matchup

TIGERS: RHP Jeremy Bonderman (6-6, 4.84 ERA)
Detroit will start Bonderman on three days' rest rather than use a spot starter. If he can keep up his slider and change of speeds, he could have a chance at another solid start. He held the White Sox to a run on five hits over 6 2/3 innings Monday.

Angels: LHP Scott Kazmir (7-9, 6.92 ERA)
Kazmir returns from the disabled list for his first start since July 11 in Oakland, when he yielded 13 earned runs, before going to the disabled list with shoulder fatigue. He feels he is ready to return, refreshed, to make up for lost time.
