Jackson faces Tigers in White Sox debut

By Jesse Sanchez / MLB.com

Two young pitchers with two completely different histories will take the hill Wednesday.

But for Chicago's Edwin Jackson and Detroit's Armando Galarraga the goal remains the same: win the ballgame. After splitting Tuesday's doubleheader, the Tigers will have to win the final two games of the series to gain any ground on the first-place White Sox in the AL Central.

Here's what's certain: the Tigers are all too familiar with Jackson, who will make his White Sox debut after being acquired from the D-backs prior to non-waiver Trade Deadline. He pitched for Tigers in 2009 and actually beat Detroit in June while with Arizona.

"It's been pretty hectic," Jackson said after the trade. "I try to stay away from it as much as possible and just wait for phone calls and try to stay away from the computers and Internet and the, 'He said, she said.' I just kind of keep it as calm as I can and it seems to work."

In his last start, Jackson gave up five runs on eight hits in five innings against the Phillies.

As for Galarraga, he says he's fine after a Kevin Youkilis line drive off his right ankle knocked him out of his last start Friday in a 6-5 victory at Boston. He hasn't won at Comerica Park since his almost-perfect game June 2, but he tossed a quality start there July 25.

"We needed one," Galarraga said. "We needed one because all the guys here believe we have a chance to make the playoffs."

Galarraga won't need to be perfect for the Tigers to have a chance. Just being good will suffice.

White Sox: Sale could make debut soon
Chris Sale, the club's top pick in the 2010 First-Year Player Draft and 13th selection overall, could get promoted to the big leagues this week, possibly as early as Wednesday.

...The White Sox have won seven of their last nine games.

...The White Sox have been in first place for the last 26 days and every day since July 11.

Tigers: Inge makes rehab start
Brandon Inge made a rehab start for Class A West Michigan on Tuesday, an indication that he's recovered from a broken hand much quicker than expected.

... The Tigers lost another piece of their farm system Tuesday, when the A's claimed recently designated slugger Jeff Larish off waivers. The 27-year-old appeared in 77 games in three years for the Tigers, hitting .239 (45-for-188) with 24 RBIs.

...Max Scherzer and Miguel Cabrera were named Tigers pitcher and player of the month for July.

... Jose Valverde has converted each of his last 21 save opportunities.

... The Tigers have won 21 of their last 29 games at home.

Worth Noting:
Detroit's Austin Jackson has hit safely in 27 of his last 32 games while Johnny Damon has hit safely in 19 of his last 27 games.

... Cabrera has been nominated for MLB's Clutch Performer of the Month for July.

... The Bring Me Home Campaign launched by Paul Konerko and Jim Thome in 2007 has raised more than $245,000 in its first three years.

From MLB Tigers Game Notes

RECENT RESULTS: The Tigers split a day-night doubleheader against the White Sox at Comerica Park yesterday, suffering a 12-2 loss in the day game before recording a 7-1 win during the night game. Rick Porcello (4-10) took the loss for Detroit during the day game, while Jeremy Bonderman (6-6) picked up the win during the night game. Austin Jackson combined for four hits during the two games, while Johnny Damon collected three hits and two RBI during the night game. The Tigers continue a 10-game homestand with the third game of a four-game series against the White Sox this evening. The club continues the homestand with a three-game series versus both the Angels and Rays.

INGE REINSTATED FROM DL; WORTH PLACED ON DL: The Tigers today announced the club has recalled the injury rehabilitation assignment of third baseman Brandon Inge from Single A West Michigan and reinstated him from the disabled list. Sidelined since July 20 with a non-displaced fracture of the fifth metacarpal in his left hand, Inge finished with two doubles last night in his only game with the Whitecaps. To create room on the club’s 25-man roster, the Tigers today placed infielder Danny Worth on the 15-day disabled list with a bruised left heel.

WINNING WAYS AT COMERICA PARK: The Tigers enter tonight’s game versus the White Sox having won 21 of the club’s last 29 games at home dating back to June 2. For the season, Detroit has compiled a 36-18 record at Comerica Park and is tops among all American League clubs with a .667 winning percentage at home in 2010.

MIGGY THE MAN AT HOME: Miguel Cabrera enters tonight’s game versus the White Sox having hit safely in 17 of his last 19 games at Comerica Park dating back to June 19. During the 19-game stretch at home, he is hitting .406 (28x69) with 14 runs scored, 10 doubles, a triple, four home runs and 19 RBI. Cabrera is fourth among all American League players with a .344 batting average (66x192) at home this season.

CABRERA KEEPS ON HITTING: Miguel Cabrera enters tonight’s game versus Chicago hitting .363 (58x160) with 32 runs scored, 19 doubles, a triple, eight home runs and 40 RBI over his last 45 games dating back to June 12. Cabrera is tops among all American League players with 19 doubles during that stretch, while he is third with a .363 batting average and fourth with 40 RBI.

PAPA GRANDE POWERS THE PEN:
Jose Valverde has converted each of his last 21 save opportunities for the Tigers, tied for the fifth-longest such single-season streak in franchise history. He is fourth among all American League relievers with a .157 batting average against this season, while he is tied for eighth with 21 saves.

ACTION JACKSON:
Austin Jackson enters tonight’s game versus Chicago having hit safely in 28 of his last 32 games. During the 32-game stretch, he is hitting .328 (44x134) with 25 runs scored, eight doubles, four triples, eight RBI and five stolen bases.

JOHNNY BE GOOD: Johnny Damon has hit safely in 19 of his last 27 games for the Tigers. During the 27-game stretch, he is hitting .316 (31x98) with nine doubles, four home runs and 16 RBI.

DOUBLE TIME: The Tigers collected three doubles yesterday versus Chicago and the club has recorded 69 doubles over the team’s last 32 games dating back to June 28. The Tigers are third among all American League clubs with 69 doubles during that stretch.

COKE PROVIDES RELIEF: Phil Coke enters tonight’s game versus Chicago with a 3-2 record and 1.33 ERA (20.1IP/3ER) over his last 26 outings dating back to June 3. He is tied for second among all American League relievers with six wins this season.

BULLISH BEHAVIOR: Tigers relievers have compiled a 20-13 record and 3.71 ERA (317.2IP/131ER) through the club’s first 106 games this season. Tigers relievers are second in the American League with 20 victories, while the club is fifth with a 3.71 ERA.

AUSTIN ADDING UP THE HITS: Austin Jackson finished with four hits yesterday versus Chicago to bring his hit total to 122 this season. His 122 hits mark the most in a single season by a Tigers rookie since Milt Cuyler also collected 122 hits during the 1991 season. Matt Nokes was the last club rookie with more hits during a single season as he finished with 133 hits during the 1987 season.

GETTING AN ASSIST FROM THE OUTFIELD: Tigers outfielders recorded two assists yesterday versus Chicago, marking the club’s 24th and 25th outfield assists this season. The Tigers are tops among all American League clubs with 25 outfield assists.

POSTING A DOUBLE-DIGIT HIT TOTAL:
The Tigers finished with 11 hits last night versus Chicago, marking the 46th time during the 2010 season the club has finished with 10-or-more hits in a game. Detroit has compiled a 34-12 record in the 46 games in which the club has posted a double-digit hit total.
