Doubleheader on tap for White Sox, Tigers

The volatile race in the American League Central gets a double feature Tuesday, when the White Sox and Tigers meet in Detroit for a doubleheader with postseason implications. Detroit heads into this four-game series seven games behind division-leading Chicago, but the two teams will play each other 14 times over the next two months.

They'll start with two games on Tuesday, with Chicago sending Mark Buehrle to the hill in the first game and Detroit countering with second-year starter Rick Porcello. The second game will likely feature right-hander Carlos Torres -- although the White Sox remain undecided -- pitted against Jeremy Bonderman.

The home team will send Porcello to the mound in the first half of the doubleheader, and he'll be trying to reverse his luck. Porcello completed the sixth inning in just five of his first 13 starts before his demotion to Triple-A Toledo, but he's done it all three times since his return. Still, he has an 0-2 record and a 3.38 ERA to show for it.

The former first-round draftee is 0-2 with a 10.45 ERA against Chicago this season, and the White Sox cashed in for eight earned runs against him in early June. Now, it's a different situation for both teams after the break.

Buehrle has begun to rally from a slow start to the season, winning six of his last eight decisions and posting a 3-1 record with a 3.00 ERA in July. The southpaw had an ERA over 4.00 in each of the preceding months, and he's completed at least six innings and allowed three earned runs or fewer in eight of his last nine starts.

Buehrle has gone 5-2 with a 4.65 ERA at home this season, compared to a 4-6 record and a 3.71 ERA on the road. He's gone 14-8 with a 2.99 career ERA against the Tigers.

Bonderman is 5-6 with a 5.05 ERA this season, and he's been hit hard over the course of the season. The right-hander has given up a home run in 10 straight starts, and the Tigers have gone 5-5 in those games.

"We've just got to go out and play," Bonderman said of the four-game set against the Central leaders. "You want to gain some ground, but you want to go out and play well every time you play. This is an opportunity for us to gain ground without having help. We can go out and control our own destiny."

White Sox: Pierre goes one at a time
Juan Pierre went 2-for-4 on Sunday, adding another two singles to a stat-line full of them. Pierre has 107 hits this season, and all but 12 of them have gone for singles. Pierre hasn't homered since September 2008, a run of more than 250 games. Since the start of '09, Pierre has 785 at-bats and no home runs.

Tigers: Rookie duo leading the way
Detroit got a rare 0-for-8 performance Sunday from rookies Austin Jackson and Brennan Boesch, who have proved to be one of the league's most dynamic tandems. Jackson has hit safely in 26 of his last 30 games and leads all AL rookies with 118 hits, while Boesch leads all AL rookies with 12 home runs and 51 RBIs.

Boesch has hit the wall in recent weeks, though, batting just .095 (6-for-63) over his last 17 games. Detroit added another rookie into the mix over the weekend, and Jeff Frazier went 2-for-7 in two starts at designated hitter. Frazier was leading the Triple-A International League with 32 doubles and 56 extra-base hits at the time of his promotion.

Worth noting
Chicago's lead remained a half-game over Minnesota by virtue of Sunday's 4-1 win over Oakland. The White Sox had a 12-game winning streak at home snapped on Saturday and are now 20-2 in their last 22 home games. ... Mark Teahen, who went on the disabled list with a broken right middle finger on June 1, went 3-for-4 in his first Minor League rehab game. ... Detroit starter Armando Galarraga left Friday night's game early but expects to be able to make his next scheduled start.




Pitching matchup

TIGERS: RHP Jeremy Bonderman (5-6, 5.05 ERA)
Bonderman will make his first start since July 25, hoping to pick up his first win since the All-Star break and find some of the life he had in his pitches a month ago. He has a 7.29 ERA and a .928 OPS allowed in his past six starts.

WHITE SOX: RHP Carlos Torres (0-0, -.-- ERA)
Right-hander Carlos Torres was recalled from Triple-A Charlotte to start Game 2 of the doubleheader. He was 7-7 with a 3.41 ERA for Charlotte. He pitched in eight games, five of them starts, last season for the White Sox.
