Young hurlers take spotlight for Tigers, Tribe

Detroit hasn't gotten off to the second-half start it was hoping for, while Cleveland has seen some encouraging signs from its pitching staff lately.

After Jake Westbrook shut down Detroit for two runs on Friday night, the Tigers managed only four runs total in losing both games of a doubleheader Saturday. Fausto Carmona went seven innings to earn the win in the matinee; Mitch Talbot allowed one run in five innings in the nightcap.

Cleveland's starters now have a 3.73 ERA in the past 18 games, and the staff on a whole has allowed three runs or fewer in 11 of the past 18.

But the Tribe will have a relatively unknown quantity on the mound for the finale, with twenty-two-year-old right-hander Jeanmar Gomez making his Major League debut. He was 6-8 with a 5.70 ERA in 18 starts at Columbus this season, after earning honors as Eastern League Pitcher of the Year at Double-A Akron last year.

Gomez will be up against Detroit's prized prospect Andy Oliver, making his fourth career start and looking for his first career win. The southpaw gave up four runs in 4 2/3 innings against Minnesota on July 11. He walked four and gave up five hits.

"His control wasn't very good," Tigers manager Jim Leyland said.

Tigers: Porcello makes his rotation case
Rick Porcello allowed one run in eight innings after being recalled from Triple-A on Saturday, and he may have earned himself a chance to stay in the Tigers' rotation. With Armando Galarraga expected back off the disabled list sometime next week, Detroit will have to decide between Porcello and Oliver as to whom they'll keep with the big club.

Indians: Wood can't elude disabled list
For the 14th time in his 12-year career, Indians closer Kerry Wood is on the disabled list. It's only a blister on his right index finger, but it will sideline the 33-year-old for at least 15 days -- in 2008, a similar blister cost him a month while he was with the Cubs. Wood is 1-4 with a 6.30 ERA and will be replaced in the back of the bullpen by Chris Perez. The Indians called up Jensen Lewis from Triple-A Columbus to take Wood's spot on the roster.

Worth noting
Carlos Santana's home run in the fourth inning Saturday gave Cleveland an extra-base hit in each of its past 40 games, the longest streak in the American League.

... Injured Indians outfielder Shin-Soo Choo (thumb) took 60 swings in the batting cages Saturday and is expected to take outdoor batting practice Sunday.

... Indians infielder Asdrubal Cabrera went 1-for-4 with a run in a rehab outing for Double-A Akron on Saturday.



Pitching matchup

TIGERS: LHP Andy Oliver (0-3, 6.38 ERA)
Oliver was roughed up in his last two starts for the Tigers and hasn't shown good command of his pitches since his June 30 start in Minnesota. He has combined to throw only 6 1/3 innings over his last two starts.


INDIANS: RHP Jeanmar Gomez (0-0, -.-- ERA)
Gomez will be promoted to make this spot start against the Tigers, then he'll head back to Triple-A Columbus. It's been a disappointing season for Gomez, who was Eastern League pitcher of the year at Double-A Akron in '09. He is 6-8 with a 5.70 ERA in 18 starts for Columbus.
