Porcello, Garcia seek wins, not style

By Chris Hempson / MLB.com

Ozzie Guillen isn't easily impressed. Despite nearly throwing a perfect game during his previous start before Tuesday's series opener, Tigers pitcher Armando Galarraga wasn't catching the attention of the White Sox manager.

"Interesting [to see Galarraga]?" Guillen asked on Tuesday. "To me, not really. To me, it's another game. I think it's something special for baseball at this time but right now it's been a week from that day. I don't think we're going to approach him and think about what he did last time."

So with Rick Porcello, who finished third in the 2009 American League Rookie of the Year race, taking the mound Wednesday, Guillen won't be overly impressed. Granted, the 21-year-old Porcello isn't following up last year's campaign with another impressive season just yet, going 4-5 on the year with a 5.25 ERA.

But the right-hander does have a 3.57 ERA in his last three starts, as Porcello completed a total of 17 2/3 innings. He's had six straight starts where he's allowed fewer than four earned runs, including seven innings of scoreless ball in a masterful performance against the Yankees on May 12.

The White Sox, meanwhile, will turn to Freddy Garcia to right the ship after the team suffered a tough loss Tuesday night and a rough start to its season.

"We're not going to win every game," first baseman Paul Konerko said. "We're in a hole. It's not going to be one of those things where you go 15-20 games and don't lose. You're going to have some losses in there. I just think our goal right now should be to win this series and the only bigger goal we should think of right now is to get to .500. Anything beyond than that is not productive right now in my mind. It's just too much to think about. We should think about what we've got going on right here, but if we are going to think about anything bigger it's going to be to get to .500 and then we can move on from there."

White Sox: Rios is Rolling
He came to the White Sox with high expectations, and this season, Alex Rios is living up to all of them. The center fielder is batting .348, (47-for-135), with 10 home runs and 14 stolen bases in his past 37 games before Tuesday.

At his current pace, Rios could hit 35 home runs and steal 50 bases, which would make him the first in White Sox history to record a 30/30 season. He's tied for eighth in the American League in home runs with 12 and tied for seventh in stolen bases with 17.

Chicago has to love this transformation from Rios, who was a star at times while with the Blue Jays. But in his first season with the White Sox last year, Rios struggled mightily, batting just .199. Granted, he only appeared in 41 games, but this season has been much better.

Tigers: The road warrior
Miguel Cabrera has been dynamite with the Tigers throughout his career in Detroit, but the team's first baseman continues to display his excellence this year, especially in what might appear to be hostile territory: road games. But Cabrera couldn't be enjoying much more success.

Entering Tuesday night, the first baseman was hitting .376 on the year with nine doubles, 10 home runs, and 33 RBIs during 27 games on the road this year. His road batting average and RBI totals were tops in the American League, while his home runs were second-best.

Further, Cabrera hit nine home runs in 14 games from May 20 to June 6. During that stretch, he hit a scorching .393. He then went 0-for-4 on Tuesday.

Worth noting
The Tigers recalled shortstop Danny Worth from Triple-A Toledo on Tuesday.

... Prior to Tuesday, center fielder Austin Jackson had hit safely in 25 of his 28 games on the road this season. He went 0-for-5 in the series opener.

... The White Sox have a -49 run deferential on the season.

Pitching matchup

DET: RHP Rick Porcello (4-5, 5.25 ERA)
Porcello will look to even his record as he faces the White Sox in game two of a three-game series Wednesday. In his last start, Porcello was shaky in a no-decision against the Indians last Thursday, allowing six runs -- three earned -- on seven hits, while striking out two in 5 1/3 innings. Before his mishap against the Indians, Porcello had made four-straight solid starts and he will look to get back on track in Chicago. Porcello has never pitched at U.S. Cellular field, but is 0-2 with a 6.57 ERA against the White Sox in two career starts.

White Sox: RHP Freddy Garcia (5-3, 4.94 ERA)
Even though Garcia entered the season as the nominal fifth starter for the White Sox, he's pitched like their ace so far. Not only do his five wins pace the team, but his 4.94 ERA is the second-lowest of the five starters. In his last start, Garcia went seven innings, giving up three runs. The White Sox offense bailed him out, however, by scoring four runs in those seven innings, earning Garcia the win. Lifetime against the Tigers, Garcia is 17-6 with a 3.73 ERA in 185 2/3 innings.
