| DETROIT -- Rick Porcello and Ricky Romero began their Major League careers pitching opposite each other back in April. Their rematch Sunday will be a display of how far they've progressed since. In Porcello's case, he has come pretty far lately.
What had been a question two months ago as to whether Porcello was running out of energy well before the stretch run has now turned into an answer for the Tigers in their stretch run. He's 3-1 with a 3.45 ERA in eight starts since Aug. 1, allowing just a .226 batting average from opponents while walking just nine batters over 44 1/3 innings. On Sunday, the Tigers will be counting on their youngster to be a stopper. Detroit enters with a season-high five-game losing streak and a slowly dwindling lead in the American League Central, now five games over the second-place White Sox and 5 1/2 over the Twins. With help from pitching coach Rick Knapp and catcher Gerald Laird, Porcello is a little more of a power pitcher now than he was back in April, using a mid-90s fastball more often to change the eye level on hitters and set up his nasty sinker. He has all but replaced the curveball as his breaking pitch of choice with a slider that he had shelved last year but slowly brought back into his game."It's big to keep guys off the sinker and also to kind of hide it a little bit," Porcello said after a recent outing. "Some guys, I was throwing a lot of four-seamers early to them and trying to run sinkers in late. They know I'm trying to come in on them, but they haven't seen it yet. I'm trying to kind of hide that as my weapon." Considering it was a hanging curveball from Porcello that Adam Lind hit out to center for the go-ahead homer that helped send the rookie to defeat April 9 at Rogers Centre, the adjustment is poignant.Manager Jim Leyland continues to remind people that Porcello is just a kid, that expectations should be tempered. Still, Porcello's next win would give him the highest win total for a pitcher in a season before his 21st birthday since Dwight Gooden won 24 games in 1985.If the Tigers get to the postseason, it's difficult to imagine Porcello not being a big part of it along with Justin Verlander, Edwin Jackson and Jarrod Washburn in a playoff rotation. The late-season roll from Porcello has pushed him back into the conversation over who deserves the AL Rookie of the Year Award. Romero's 10-4 record and 3.53 ERA in early August had given him a strong case, too, before he hit his recent struggles. The 24-year-old left-hander is 2-3 with a 5.92 ERA in seven starts since Aug. 7, including three quality starts.Opponents are batting .304 with an .845 OPS (on-base plus slugging percentage) against Romero in that span, though he has allowed just three homers over those 38 innings and none since Aug. 18. Of course, the Tigers have been struggling against left-handed pitchers lately of all shapes, sizes and success levels. That's a problem with Romero and fellow lefty David Purcey looming for the Blue Jays in the final two games of this four-game wraparound series. "We have to start doing more against left-handed pitching," Leyland said after Friday's loss, "or they'll be taking them off the Ferris wheel to pitch against us." ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Pitching matchupDET: RHP Rick Porcello (12-8, 4.26 ERA)Though many expected Porcello to be ahead of the curve when he made the Tigers rotation out of Spring Training, few could have imagined he'd end up so critical to the Tigers' success this season when he made his Major League debut against the Blue Jays back on April 9 at Rogers Centre. He lost that game in part on a couple of wayward offspeed pitches, but he has been much more of a power pitcher lately, using his fastball early and often to set up his sinker. TOR: LHP Ricky Romero (12-7, 4.14 ERA) After two losses in a row -- to the Red Sox and the Yankees -- Romero earned a victory over the Twins on Tuesday despite falling behind 3-0 after three innings. He lasted 6 2/3 innings, allowed seven hits and three walks, struck out four and benefited from Toronto's six-run sixth. With 12 victories, Romero is tied for third on the franchise's list for wins by a rookie. Left-hander Jeff Musselman had 12 in 1987. Romero still needs to learn to finish off hitters when he is ahead 0-2 or 1-2. He made his Major League debut against the Tigers on April 9 and earned the victory in a 6-2 game with six innings, seven hits, two runs, one home run, two walks and five strikeouts. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Tidbits... Curtis Granderson's next home run will be the 100th of his Major League career. His home run Saturday was his 23rd leadoff homer for his career, tying Lou Whitaker for the Tigers franchise record. ... Miguel Cabrera is batting .374 (37-for-99) with six home runs and 21 RBIs in his last 25 games. ... Armando Galarraga is expected to play catch Sunday morning, which should give him a better idea whether the lingering inflammation in his right elbow is subsiding and will allow him to potentially start next Wednesday in place of injured Nate Robertson. ... All kids age 14 and under in attendance Sunday will receive a PAWS bobblehead. ... ESPN personality and Rochester, Mich., native Dana Jacobsen is scheduled to throw out the ceremonial first pitch. ... The Tigers' 14-8 record on Sundays is their best of any day of the week.------------------------------------------------------------------------ To track MLB play-by-play, to help post GDT outcomes: http://m.mlb.com/scores/On the Internet MLB.TV Gameday Audio• Gameday• Official game notesOn television • On radio• / • XM Channel Schedule• Direct TV Extra Innings Schedule------------------------------------------------------------------------ Up next (Probable Pitchers)• Monday: Tigers ( Justin Verlander, 16-8, 3.24 ERA) vs. Blue Jays ( David Purcey, 0-2, 7.01 ERA), 7:05 p.m. ET
