Moya keys Tigers' rout of Florida Southern
Outfielder drives in four runs; Ray fans five in two frames for win

BOX SCORE

LAKELAND, Fla. -- The Tigers and Florida Southern College have a Spring Training tradition going with their annual exhibition game. Steven Moya is making a tradition out of big hits in that tilt.

A year after putting up three hits against the Mocs as an extra player called up for the day, Moya, the club's No. 12 prospect, topped that by driving in four runs with a double and a triple, keying a middle-inning onslaught in a 12-0 Tigers win Tuesday afternoon at Joker Marchant Stadium.

Unofficially, it was the first game for Brad Ausmus managing the Tigers. By contrast, it's the fourth Spring Training in which Moya has played in a game for the big club. This is the first year, though, that Moya has come to Spring Training with a spot on the 40-man roster.

The Tigers have long seen raw potential in the lanky outfielder. He's listed at 6-foot-6 but says he's 6-foot-7, and he has added some bulk to a frame that resembled more of a small forward in college basketball than a corner outfielder in baseball.

Moya's swing is similarly big, and it put him on the run for most of the afternoon. After replacing Torii Hunter in the second inning, Moya came up in the third inning of a scoreless game and sent a ground ball just inside first base and down the right-field line for a two-run double.

Two innings later, Moya connected for a line drive deep into the gap in right-center field, driving in two more before scoring on a Don Kelly infield single.

"I was just looking for a pitch in my zone," Moya said. "These guys are college guys, they have different pitches and locations. I was just looking for a pitch to hit. On the double, I had one strike, so I was just looking for a pitch to hit. It was a curveball."

Robbie Ray, the prospect acquired in the Doug Fister trade, picked up the win by striking out five batters over two scoreless innings. He recovered from a Conor Szczerba double leading off the fourth inning by striking out back-to-back hitters, and catcher James McCann threw out Szczerba trying to steal third.

"It's always different when you go to a live game situation, as opposed to facing pitchers in batting practice," Ausmus said. "For a lot of guys, it's the first game they've seen in months. It's good to kind of start shaking the rust off."

Second baseman drives go-ahead two-run single in ninth; Martinez adds two RBIs

BOX SCORE

LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. -- Hernan Perez's ninth-inning, two-out, two-run single off Shae Simmons enabled the Tigers to overcome four errors and open the Grapefruit League season with a 6-5 win over the Braves on Wednesday afternoon at Champion Stadium. The game was called due to rain with two outs in the ninth.

With resumption in question, the Braves asked the Elias Sports Bureau for a ruling and said Elias stated that the Tigers were declared the winner. The decision wasn't questioned by either side.

Ernesto Mejia recorded two doubles and Dan Uggla contributed a pair of singles for the Braves.

Mejia opened the seventh with a double down the left-field line and advanced to third base when Jose Constanza reached on a fielder's choice that was gloved by pitcher Eduardo Sanchez. Catcher John Murrian's errant attempt to prevent Constanza from stealing second base allowed Mejia to score and put Constanza in position to jog home on Todd Cunningham's sacrifice fly.

Backed by the two perfect innings completed by starting pitcher Freddy Garcia, the Braves held a 2-1 lead before the lead changed hands three times during the sixth and seventh innings. Atlanta's slim advantage came courtesy of Evan Gattis' two-out third-inning double off Justin Miller and Uggla's second-inning single off Detroit starter Drew Smyly, who retired the first five batters he faced before allowing Chris Johnson to lace a two-out double down the left-field line.

The Tigers gained a brief lead with a two-run sixth inning against Hector Daniel Rodriguez. Victor Martinez fueled the sixth with a game-tying single that scored Ian Kinsler, who had walked to open the inning. Martinez also scored Rajai Davis with a fourth-inning single off Ryan Buchter.

"We hope we can use some of our leg assets in terms of running the bases and maybe defensively," manager Brad Ausmus said of his team's baserunning. "But I think it's the frame of mind that we have to change before it becomes a real factor, a frame of mind of wanting to go the extra 90, extra 180 feet, forcing the defense to make a play on you."

Ramiro Pena erased Atlanta's one-run deficit with a two-out double off Evan Reed in the sixth inning. Pena's double to left scored Tommy La Stella, who reached on an infield single and advanced to second base on second baseman Perez's throwing error.

Up next: The Tigers and Rick Porcello will welcome the Braves to Joker Marchant Stadium for the Lakeland, Fla., end of this home-and-home series Thursday afternoon with a 1:05 p.m. ET start, live on Gameday Audio. Porcello's first start of the spring will feature shortstop Jose Iglesias behind him, plus Miguel Cabrera at first base. Detroit's projected Opening Day outfield of Torii Hunter, Austin Jackson and Andy Dirks is also expected to start, while the late-inning relief trio of Joe Nathan, Bruce Rondon and Joba Chamberlain is on the pitching list.

BOX SCORE

LAKELAND, Fla. -- The spring-opening home-and-home series between the Tigers and Braves ended up with two Detroit go-ahead rallies and a sweep. Torii Hunter and Austin Jackson hit RBI singles in a two-run fifth inning Thursday, sending the Tigers to another win with a 5-2 decision at Joker Marchant Stadium.

Jason Heyward provided the highlight of the afternoon with a tape-measure home run down the right-field line, the same area where he cleared the batting cage building four years ago on a mammoth drive off Max Scherzer. Thursday's shot off reliever Duane Below hit near the top of the roof on the building, giving Atlanta a 2-1 lead in the third, but the Tigers rallied for a second consecutive day.

Below followed Rick Porcello, who recovered from a Ryan Doumit first-inning RBI double by striking out the side in the second. Jose Iglesias tied it in the bottom half without a base hit, drawing a leadoff walk off Atlanta starter Kris Medlen, advancing to second on a hit-and-run play on an Andy Dirks groundout, reaching third on a wild pitch and scoring on Miguel Cabrera's groundout.

Detroit squandered a scoring opportunity following back-to-back singles in the fourth, but Iglesias -- batting leadoff for this game -- again sparked a rally by beating out an infield single to start the fifth. Miguel Cabrera's walk moved pinch-runner Devon Travis to second, where Travis scored easily on Hunter's ground ball through the right side.

Braves right-hander Wirfin Obispo regrouped with a James McCann flyout but fell behind on Jackson, batting sixth in this game instead of his usual leadoff spot. He centered a line drive that fell in front of center fielder B.J. Upton.

Porcello topped out at 94 mph on his fastball in his first outing of the spring, striking out three in two innings. Joba Chamberlain hit 90-92 mph on his fastball in relief, but commanded it to go with a biting slider. Medlen gave up two hits and the one run in two innings.

Gerald Laird left the game after one at-bat with back stiffness, but characterized the injury as minor.

Up next: The Tigers have their first of two split-squad days this spring on Friday. American League Cy Young Award winner Scherzer will stay in Lakeland for his first start of the spring in a 1:05 p.m. ET matchup against a Yankees lineup that's expected to include All-Stars Brian McCann, Carlos Beltran and Jacoby Ellsbury. MLB Gameday Audio will will have the radio broadcast online, as will AM 1270 in Detroit. Meanwhile, Jose Alvarez will lead the travel squad to Clearwater for a 1:05 p.m. game against the Phillies at Bright House Networks Field that will be available on MLB.TV.

Tigers starter fans two in two innings; pitching serves up four long balls

BOX SCORE

LAKELAND, Fla. -- Brian McCann hit his first home run in a Yankees uniform Friday, spearheading a four-homer barrage off Tigers pitching before New York's Minor Leaguers withstood a seventh-inning rally for a 7-4 win at Joker Marchant Stadium.

On a day when the Tigers easily outhit the Bronx Bombers, the combination of Yankees homers and Detroit outs on the basepaths nullified any advantage. All seven Yankees runs scored on balls that left the yard. McCann's solo shot leading off the second inning was the only base hit off Max Scherzer in the reigning American League Cy Young Award winner's first start of the spring.

A year ago at this point, Scherzer was being held back a bit as a precaution for his shoulder. With no such restrictions this spring, Scherzer pitched strong, topping out at 94 mph on his fastball while throwing all four pitches in his arsenal. His one mistake was a fastball to McCann, who drove it over an infield shift and off the batting cage building beyond right field.

Scherzer struck out two batters to close his outing. Yankees catching prospect Gary Sanchez added to the advantage with a third-inning solo homer off Luis Ortega.

Yankees starter Adam Warren walked two and allowed two hits over his two innings, but escaped a first-inning jam with back-to-back outs on the bases. Warren picked speedster Rajai Davis off second base with Miguel Cabrera at the plate. Cabrera drew a two-out walk, but was thrown out trying to go from first to third on Victor Martinez's walk, hoping to catch Warren unattentive.

"Miggy saw the third baseman was playing over towards the shortstop hole, and he thought he might be able to get there," manager Brad Ausmus said. "If he had kind of slowed down at second and acted like he was stopping, rather than just continuing, he might have got it. He also might have got it if he was 10 years younger."

Zoilo Almonte and Ramon Flores later threw out Tigers baserunners at the plate, while Jose Pirela threw out Steven Moya trying to stretch a single into a double. The aggressive play reflects Ausmus' push this spring to try for extra bases. It won't always be successful, but Ausmus has said he's trying to change the team's mindset.

"We told them from Day 1 that we wanted to force the defense to make the play," Ausmus said. "Well, today they made the plays. But one or two of those, three really, they had to make perfect throws. ... We want them to take chances now. You hope that creates kind of an overall mentality for baserunning as a team that we're always trying to go the extra 90 or 180 feet."

Pirela added a two-run homer off Luis Marte in the seventh inning, followed by a three-run shot by Yangervis Solarte to build a 7-0 lead. Moya's RBI single and John Murrian's two-run double cut it down in the bottom half, but never threatened to erase it.

Up next: Tigers insurance starters Kyle Lobstein and Drew VerHagen will take the mound Saturday afternoon for the Tigers' 1:05 p.m. ET matchup with the Astros at Joker Marchant Stadium. Lobstein is scheduled to make the start, with VerHagen -- who pitched a scoreless inning against Florida Southern College on Wednesday -- in relief along with Justin Miller, Ian Krol, Blaine Hardy and Al Alburquerque. Scott Feldman is scheduled to start for Houston. The game will be broadcast live on Gameday Audio and 97.1 FM in Detroit.

Castellanos has big day as Tigers fall to Phillies
Third baseman doubles twice, drives in four; Marinez struggles with command

By Todd Zolecki / MLB.com | 2/28/2014 4:04 P.M. ET

BOX SCORE

CLEARWATER, Fla. -- The Tigers jumped on Kyle Kendrick early Friday at Bright House Field, but the Phillies came back in a big way.

Kendrick allowed a three-run double to Nick Castellanos with two outs in the first inning to hand the Tigers a three-run lead, but the Phillies scored one run in the second and eight more in the third on their way to a 10-6 victory.

Darin Ruf singled to score Marlon Byrd in the second to make it 3-1. The Phillies then scored eight in the third, which Jimmy Rollins capped with a three-run home run to right field. Philadelphia took advantage of Tigers reliever Jhan Marinez, who struggled with command, and errors in the field, scoring five unearned runs.

"Obviously the first inning was a little rough," said Kendrick, who walked three and struck out three in two innings. "I couldn't throw strikes. My command was off. I was trying to rush a little bit. I don't think I'll walk three guys again this spring. That won't happen again."

Tigers starter Jose Alvarez allowed one run on two hits, walking two and striking out two, over two innings.

The Tigers, who had a split-squad Friday, scored three runs in the sixth inning against Luis Garcia, including Castellanos' second RBI double, to make it 9-6.

Jackson, Kelly combine for three RBIs in victory
Left-hander Lobstein strikes out four in three scoreless innings vs. Astros

By Jason Beck / MLB.com | 3/1/2014 6:00 P.M. ET

BOX SCORE

LAKELAND, Fla. -- Austin Jackson's RBI single and Don Kelly's two-run double fueled a five-run fourth inning that provided all the offense the Tigers needed in a 5-1 victory over the Astros on Saturday at Joker Marchant Stadium.

The win drew the Tigers (3-2) back to their winning ways after Detroit lost both ends of a split-squad day Friday. Houston fell to 1-1.

Kyle Lobstein, filling the rotation spot that awaits Justin Verlander's return to game action, became the first Tiger this spring to pitch three innings. He held the Astros hitless, allowing only a walk while striking out four of the first seven batters he faced, with a good change of speeds.

Astros starter Scott Feldman, making his first appearance in a Houston uniform after signing a three-year contract in the offseason, threw two scoreless innings, allowing one hit and one walk.

Feldman threw his complete arsenal in his first start.

"That's how I pitched during the season, just trying to get a feel for everything as quickly as I can," Feldman said. "It usually doesn't come right away, but I've worked on everything and threw all my pitches today."

Brad Peacock followed Feldman with a quality third inning, but back-to-back singles from Miguel Cabrera and Victor Martinez and an Alex Avila walk put Peacock in a bases-loaded jam in the fourth.

Up came Jackson, who has been batting around the middle of the order so far this spring, rather than his usual leadoff spot. His soft line drive fell in front of a charging George Springer in short center field to plate Cabrera and open the scoring.

Peacock surprised Kelly with a first-pitch curveball, but followed with a fastball that Kelly drove into the gap in right-center. Jackson stopped at third, but Nick Castellanos and Hernan Perez emptied the bases with sacrifice flies.

"He threw a pretty good curveball on that first pitch," Kelly said. "I'd never faced him before, I think. He was throwing pretty firm. He seemed to cut [the ball] a little bit, too."

Brett Wallace provided Houston's lone run with an RBI groundout, scoring Carlos Correa in the sixth.

Up next: Reigning American League ERA champion Anibal Sanchez begins his 2014 prep work on Sunday afternoon when he makes the start for the Tigers' return trip to Disney's Wide World of Sports complex. Ian Kinsler, Victor Martinez and Torii Hunter are scheduled to make the trip. The 1:05 p.m. ET game against the Braves will be broadcast online at MLB Gameday Audio and back in Detroit on 97.1 FM.

Right-hander tosses two shutout innings as teams play to a 10-inning tie

BOX SCORE

LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. -- One day after recording 25 hits and plating 15 runs in a loss to the Nationals, the Braves played the Tigers to a 10-inning scoreless tie on Sunday afternoon at Champion Stadium.

With the Braves' pitching options depleted courtesy of Saturday's 16-15 loss and the fact that they were playing split-squad games on Sunday, the clubs agreed to end the game after 10 innings.

Facing the Braves for the first time since notching 17 strikeouts against them during the early portion of last year's regular season, the Tigers' Anibal Sanchez opened his Grapefruit League season with two scoreless innings. Ryan Doumit's leadoff double in the second inning accounted for the only hit surrendered by Sanchez.

Braves starting pitcher Alex Wood strengthened his bid for a rotation spot by tossing two scoreless innings in his first start of the spring. The 23-year-old southpaw surrendered three hits, notched two strikeouts and benefited from two double plays.

Tigers designated hitter Victor Martinez highlighted his two-hit day with a fourth-inning leadoff double and began it with the second of two consecutive one-out singles Wood surrendered before Torii Hunter grounded into a double play to end the first inning.

Robbie Ray also benefited from a pair of double plays as he tossed two scoreless innings while making his first appearance since the Tigers acquired him in the December trade that sent Doug Fister to the Nationals. Ray induced the double plays after allowing a third-inning single to Matt Lipka and a fourth-inning single to Freddie Freeman.

Up next: Former Detroit shortstop Jhonny Peralta is scheduled to return to Lakeland with the St. Louis Cardinals on Monday for a 1:05 p.m. ET matchup with Drew Smyly and the Tigers. Most of Detroit's projected Opening Day lineup is scheduled to start, including Miguel Cabrera, Victor Martinez, Torii Hunter, Ian Kinsler, Alex Avila, Austin Jackson and Nick Castellanos.

BOX SCORE

LAKELAND, Fla. -- Facing his former team for the first time Monday afternoon, Cardinals shortstop Jhonny Peralta looked like he felt right at home at Joker Marchant Stadium, blasting a solo homer in each of his first two trips to the plate.

But with a big chunk of their expected Opening Day starting lineup playing against St. Louis, the Tigers showed that they still have plenty of firepower left, putting up seven early runs and holding on to win, 8-5.

Peralta, who played for Detroit from 2010-13 before signing a four-year, $53 million deal with St. Louis over the offseason, was greeted warmly with a round of applause as he approached the plate in the first inning to face Tigers left-hander Drew Smyly. He promptly swatted the first pitch he saw well over the left-field fence, then homered again to tie it up in the third inning, this time banging a 1-1 pitch from Smyly off the scoreboard in right field with a little help from the outbound wind.

"I hit the ball pretty good, but I know the wind is blowing to right field. It helped a lot," Peralta said. "But I tried to put a good swing on the ball."

"I'll give him credit on the first one. He ambushed me and got it pretty good," added Smyly. "But the second one was an out."

Detroit had an answer for each of Peralta's solo shots, however. Ian Kinsler drew a leadoff walk in the first, stole second and came around to score on a single by Victor Martinez. Miguel Cabrera, who also walked, went to third on Martinez's RBI knock and scored on Austin Jackson's single to left off Cardinals starter Joe Kelly.

Kelly gave up two runs on two hits and two walks while striking out two in 1 2/3 innings. Smyly, meanwhile, allowed two runs on three hits and struck out two in three innings of work.

"I felt like I located pretty well for the most part, threw some good changeups that they swung and missed on," Smyly said. "For the most part, I had pretty clean, efficient innings, kept my pitch count low. So that's good."

The heart of the Tigers' order went to work again, plating five runs in the third inning, with four of them charged to St. Louis righty Boone Whiting. Cabrera singled to left, Martinez bounced a ground-rule double to center and Alex Avila walked to load the bases. Jackson doubled in two runs, Nick Castellanos singled home another and Danny Worth drove in Jackson with a sacrifice fly to center.

Rajai Davis lined a single to right that bounced past Randal Grichuk, allowing Davis to wheel all the way to third base and Castellanos to score. Castellanos added to Detroit's lead in the fifth, lining a solo homer to left off St. Louis lefty Tyler Lyons.

The Cardinals added three runs in the sixth, as James Ramsey roped a two-run single to right and Luis Mateo brought Ramsey home with a double.

Up next for the Tigers: Right-hander Rick Porcello will make his second start of the spring on Tuesday as the Tigers welcome the Pirates to Joker Marchant Stadium. He'll be followed by lefty Ian Krol, closer Joe Nathan and right-handers Bruce Rondon, Joba Chamberlain, Justin Miller and Jhan Marinez. Pittsburgh is scheduled to start right-hander Charlie Morton, and Davis, Steve Lombardozzi, Torii Hunter, Cabrera, Jackson and Andy Dirks are slated to appear in Detroit's lineup.

Right-hander gives up three runs after breezing through first two innings

BOX SCORE

LAKELAND, Fla. -- Pirates right-hander Charlie Morton continued his strong work early this spring as the Bucs beat the Tigers, 5-2, on Tuesday at Joker Marchant Stadium.

After tossing two hitless innings against the Yankees on Thursday, Morton allowed only one hit over three scoreless frames on Tuesday, giving him five shutout innings with just a walk and a hit to start off the spring.

"I made some decent pitches and got lucky a few times when they put really good swings on some balls. I threw a couple more offspeed pitches for strikes than the last time," Morton said.

Tigers right-hander Rick Porcello, meanwhile, breezed through the first and second innings before running into some trouble in the third. Josh Harrison doubled to left and moved to third on Chris Stewart's groundout. Jaff Decker then dropped a squeeze bunt that brought Harrison home, and Porcello's throw to first found Miguel Cabrera well off the bag. Jose Tabata singled, Decker scored on Gregory Polanco's line-drive double to right, and Tabata came home on a groundout by Pedro Alvarez.

Overall, Porcello gave up three runs on five hits and struck out one over three innings.

"I could have done better throwing first-pitch strikes," Porcello said. "The fastball feels real good. Breaking ball feels pretty good. The changeup's a little flat, but other than that, felt pretty good. I could've fielded my position a little bit better."

Austin Jackson pulled the Tigers within a run in the fourth, drilling a two-run shot, the club's second homer of the spring, to deep left field.

The Pirates tacked on two more runs late in the game. In the eighth, Taylor Lewis tripled off Tigers reliever Justin Miller and later scored on a fielder's choice. One inning later, Michael Martinez singled to plate Alen Hanson, who had reached on a single of his own off Bruce Rondon.

Up next: Reigning American League Cy Young Award winner Max Scherzer will get the start as the Tigers head to Kissimmee, Fla., to face the Astros on Wednesday afternoon at 1:05 ET. Scherzer gave up one run and struck out two in his last outing on Thursday against the Yankees. Ian Kinsler is slated to bat leadoff, with Victor Martinez hitting third, Alex Avila batting fourth and Nick Castellanos batting seventh. Watch the game live on MLB.TV.

Scherzer sharp in three scoreless innings vs. Astros
Right-hander allows one hit with three strikeouts; Kinsler has RBI single

By Brian McTaggart / MLB.com | 3/5/2014 3:51 P.M. ET

BOX SCORE

KISSIMMEE, Fla. -- Making his second start of the spring, right-hander Max Scherzer threw three scoreless innings, allowing one hit and striking out three batters, leading the Tigers to a 3-0 victory over the Astros on Wednesday afternoon at Osceola County Stadium.

Scherzer, the reigning American League Cy Young winner, threw 25 of his 37 pitches for strikes, retiring nine of the 10 batters he faced. All three strikeouts he recorded were looking, including fanning Astros top prospects Jon Singleton and George Springer to start the second inning.

"I fell behind on some hitters in the first at-bat of the innings," Scherzer said. "Those can lead to walks and long innings when you're not efficient to that first batter. I fell behind 2-0 in the second inning and 2-1 in the third inning. That's part of the process of relentlessly throwing strikes, working ahead of hitters. That's the process of pitching efficiently, not the 1-2-3 innings. It's a process of attacking the zone and getting better."

The Tigers scored in the second when Nick Castellanos hit into a double play that scored Don Kelly, who had singled. Ian Kinsler's two-out, RBI single in the fifth inning off Anthony Bass made it 3-0, with the third run scoring on an error.

Astros right-hander Lucas Harrell, also making his second start, worked three innings and allowed three hits and one run. Harrell recorded seven groundouts, which is his forte.

"I feel like the stuff I've been working on is really starting to pay off, and I'm not missing by a whole lot," Harrell said. "I got a lot of first-pitch strikes. I talked to [pitching coach Brent] Strom before the game, and we said that one thing we wanted to work on was first-pitch strikes, and two of the first three pitches for strikes. And I felt that was a thing I was doing real well today."

Up next: Weather permitting, Justin Verlander will complete his comeback from core muscle surgery when he makes his first start of the spring on Thursday afternoon against the Phillies at Joker Marchant Stadium. Drew VerHagen, Ian Krol, Phil Coke and Al Alburquerque are also scheduled to pitch in the 1:05 p.m. ET contest. Miguel Cabrera, Torii Hunter, Victor Martinez, Ian Kinsler, Alex Avila and Austin Jackson are all expected to start.

Tigers, Phils washed out by wet Florida weather
Verlander's spring debut put on hold; game not to be made up

By Jason Beck / MLB.com | 3/6/2014 1:30 P.M. ET

LAKELAND, Fla. -- Just when Justin Verlander was ready to face opposing hitters again, he met up with one foe he was never going to beat. Heavy rains at Joker Marchant Stadium washed out Thursday's Grapefruit League game between the Tigers and the split-squad Phillies.

The game will not be made up. Tickets can be exchanged for a future Tigers Spring Training home game, a Class A Advanced Lakeland Flying Tigers home game in the Florida State League, or a refund at the stadium box office.

The game had been in suspense for a while as a weather front crept towards Florida's Gulf Coast overnight and into Thursday morning. The timing of the system passing through was the only question. Once the rain began shortly after 9 a.m. ET, it kept going all morning and into the afternoon, leaving the decision to cancel inevitable. Radar showed a storm system wider than the state of Florida.

Thus, Verlander spent his Thursday throwing yet another side session, this one indoors within the Tigers' batting cages. He couldn't duplicate the game conditions, but the pitches should at least be enough to continue his process of stretching out his arm endurance to be ready for the season.

Verlander's next turn in the Tigers rotation is scheduled for next Tuesday against the Blue Jays, also at Joker Marchant Stadium. Barring no more postponements, he should get four starts against opposing hitters before the season begins.

Miguel Alfredo Gonzalez was scheduled to pitch for the Phillies, and the club has not announced how the rainout will affect its pitching plans going forward.

BOX SCORE

TAMPA, Fla. -- Carlos Beltran hit a long two-run homer and Michael Pineda made his spring debut in an encouraging relief outing before a balk plated the winning run for the Yankees in a 3-2 Grapefruit League victory over the Tigers on Friday night at George M. Steinbrenner Field.

Beltran's shot off Detroit right-hander Anibal Sanchez came with Derek Jeter on the basepaths and cleared the party deck in right field. Beltran's homer, his second of the spring, was so well-hit that Tigers right fielder Torii Hunter did not bother to take a single step in pursuit.

Hiroki Kuroda started for the Yankees and had good swing-and-miss stuff, striking out five over 2 2/3 innings of scoreless, one-hit ball. Kuroda walked one while firing 30 of 52 pitches for strikes, and was lifted because he reached his pitch count.

Sanchez allowed the homer to Beltran among four hits in a three-inning outing. He walked none and struck out five, throwing a wild pitch and tossing 35 of 53 pitches for strikes.

Pineda made his spring debut for New York, entering in relief for the fifth inning. Returning from right labrum surgery, Pineda struck four batters around a single in two scoreless innings, including fanning Miguel Cabrera in a four-pitch at-bat to conclude his outing.

The Tigers got even against Matt Thornton in the top of the seventh, with Austin Jackson's RBI triple and Steve Lombardozzi's RBI single doing the damage against the Yankees' lefty.

Joba Chamberlain pitched a scoreless bottom of the seventh for Detroit, facing the Yankees for the first time following a seven-year career with New York from 2007-13.

The Yankees earned the win in the bottom of the ninth, as Zelous Wheeler reached on a one-out single, moved to third on Francisco Cervelli's single in the next at-bat, and then scored when reliever Luis Marte balked with Jose Gil at the plate.

Jeter logged a pair of singles before working a walk, giving him four straight hits after beginning the spring 0-for-10. Cabrera doubled off the right field wall in the first inning, marking his first extra-base hit of the spring.

Up next: Drew Smyly will make his third start of the spring Saturday when he takes on the Mets in a 1:05 p.m. ET game at Joker Marchant Stadium, live on Gameday Audio. Phil Coke, Al Alburquerque, Evan Reed, Bruce Rondon, Luke Putkonen and Blaine Hardy are scheduled to pitch in relief. Ian Kinsler, Hunter, Victor Martinez and Nick Castellanos are among the regulars slated to be in the starting lineup.

Club continues to showcase speed game with 15th stolen base

BOX SCORE

LAKELAND, Fla. -- The Tigers have had the green light running the bases all spring. They almost ran their way into a victory on Saturday afternoon at Joker Marchant Stadium with their third double steal in eight days. But Matt Clark's pinch-hit, two-run double completed a ninth-inning comeback, sending the Mets past the Tigers for a 3-2 win.

Both runs came off Justin Miller, a dark-horse candidate for a spot in Detroit's bullpen. A one-out walk to Dustin Lawley and a single to Juan Centeno put runners at the corners for Clark, who stayed alive in the at-bat long enough to turn on a fastball and send it down the right-field line to clear the bases.

Detroit was in control early on, as Drew Smyly's three scoreless innings set the tone for a low-scoring affair. The Tigers were also helped by two highlight catches by their corner outfielders that helped preserve a tenuous lead. Torii Hunter made a leaping catch at the right-field fence, robbing Andrew Brown of at least a double -- if not a solo homer -- in the fourth inning.

Two innings later, Ezequiel Carrera took away a game-tying hit, when he made a diving snare in the left-field gap of a scorched line drive from pinch-hitter Eric Campbell, allowing Phil Coke to escape a bases-loaded, no-out jam with one run allowed.

For Hunter, it showed an extra step that eluded him at times last season covering ground at Comerica Park. The bigger boost went to the speedy Carrera, one of a few candidates to share time in left field with Rajai Davis.

Both Detroit runs came off Noah Syndergaard, who showed the nasty stuff that makes him one of New York's promising young starters but also struggled with command. Both Don Kelly and Daniel Fields reached on second-inning walks, setting them up to run with Bryan Holaday at the plate.

Syndergaard struck out Holaday swinging, but the offspeed pitch he used for it gave Kelly an extra split second to get into third base, as Fields followed into second. Steve Lombardozzi stepped to the plate in a two-out RBI situation and hit a ground ball deep enough to the right side to skip past Eric Young Jr. and into short right field. Fields rounded third as Kirk Nieuwenhuis charged the ball.

Syndergaard gave up two runs on two hits, but walked three with three strikeouts. Five Mets relievers combined for six innings of three-hit scoreless ball from there.

The Mets also retired two other Tigers on the bases, with Jacob deGrom catching Hunter trying to steal in the fourth inning and Ian Kinsler getting doubled off on a line drive to Anthony Seratelli in the sixth.

The Tigers have swiped 15 bases so far this spring. They stole 17 bases in Grapefruit League play in each of the last two years, and haven't stolen 20 bases in a Spring Training since 2006.

Juan Lagares continued to swing a hot bat, as he delivered two singles -- including a ground ball through the middle that led off New York's scoring threat in the sixth. Coke, who gave up three runs on six hits in his previous outing last Monday against the Cardinals, walked Nieuwenhuis -- the only left-handed hitter he faced -- before Josh Satin's slow roller down the third-base line stayed fair to load the bases.

Coke induced a double-play grounder from Brown, as Lagares scored to put New York on the board. Nieuwenhuis moved to third, where he was poised to score had Campbell's liner fallen.

Up next: Miguel Cabrera will make the trip to Jupiter to face his old squad on Sunday afternoon, as the Tigers visit the Marlins for a 1:05 p.m. ET game at Roger Dean Stadium. Ian Kinsler, Alex Avila, Austin Jackson and Nick Castellanos are also scheduled to be in the starting lineup behind Rick Porcello in his third start of the spring. MLB.com Gameday Audio will have the radio broadcast online, as will 97.1 FM on the air in Detroit.

Avila's double decisive after Porcello's solid outing
DH drives in two to break tie in eighth; Righty allows one run in 3 1/3 innings

By Joe Frisaro / MLB.com | 3/9/2014 4:02 P.M. ET

BOX SCORE

JUPITER, Fla. -- Giancarlo Stanton provided the "wow factor" with his monstrous solo home run in the fourth inning. But the decisive blow was delivered by Alex Avila, who lined a two-out, two-run double in the eighth inning that vaulted the Tigers to a 3-1 win over the Marlins on Sunday afternoon at Roger Dean Stadium.

Avila, used in a designated hitter role, had left four on base in his first three at-bats. He came through in his final trip to the plate, ripping his double into the gap in right-center off A.J. Ramos.

"It's still relatively early in Spring Training and he's missed the first few games, so he's trying to get his timing and his mechanics and see the ball," Tigers manager Brad Ausmus said. "Often early in Spring Training, you've got all these things going through your head, and if you just go out there wanting to see the ball, hit the ball, everything seems to take care of itself. I don't know if that's the case or not, but I'll certainly take 1-for-4 with two RBIs every day."

Ramos got in trouble by issuing walks to Hernan Perez and Jordan Lennerton. Both scored on Avila's two-base hit.

Until the eighth, the game was even at 1-1, courtesy of a pair of solo home runs.

In the fourth inning, Miami went ahead, powered by Stanton's laser blast to left-center off Rick Porcello that clanked off the Marlins' building beyond the wall. The shot came on the slugger's 20th Grapefruit League at-bat.

"I let it go a little bit more today," Stanton said. "I was a little conservative the past couple of days. No real reason, just hitting line drives."

"His BP today was ridiculous," Marlins pitcher Tom Koehler said. "I was standing with [Brian] Bogusevic in left field after he hit like four off the center-field batters' eye, and one off that screen out there. Bogusevic turned around and said, 'He's feeling good today. Today is the day.' I like when he does that. Those are nice."

For a team looking for a boost offensively, Stanton's impact is uplifting in more ways than just delivering a run.

"The ball comes off his bat like no one I've ever seen," Koehler said. "So when he gets a hold of one like he did today, it just fires everyone up. We're all fans of the game. When you see someone do that to a baseball, it's almost like, 'Ohhh, you guys see that?' "

Porcello averted serious trouble in his 3 1/3 innings. Along with giving up the Stanton home run, he allowed four hits and struck out three.

"I was up in the zone a little bit today with a lot of pitches, but I was able to make pitches when I needed to," Porcello said. "Sinker was getting some ground balls. Really, the best part about today was my changeup started diving again."

In the third inning, the Marlins had runners on first and second after Stanton's home run. But reliever Jhan Marinez escaped further trouble by getting Greg Dobbs to tap to second with two outs.

The Tigers pulled even at 1-1 in the seventh inning Tyler Collins' home run to right field off Mike Dunn.

In the mix for the fifth starter spot, Koehler certainly didn't hurt his chances with his impressive four shutout inning performance.

The lone hit Koehler allowed was a two-out, first-inning single to Miguel Cabrera. It was the lone base runner the right-hander allowed. He retired 10 straight to end his afternoon.

Koehler's command was strong, as he struck out four, and of his 47 pitches, 35 were strikes. Twice, he struck out Ian Kinsler.

Carlos Marmol made his Grapefruit League debut in the sixth inning, and it was adventurous. The right-hander walked two and struck out two in a scoreless frame where he threw 32 pitches, with 16 strikes.

Up next: The Tigers are back at Roger Dean Stadium on Monday for the second leg of their Jupiter trip, but it's a homecoming of sorts for St. Louis native Max Scherzer. He'll make his third start of the spring against his old hometown team, the Cardinals, in a 1:05 p.m. ET game. Lefty Casey Crosby is scheduled to make his first spring appearance in his bullpen bid, while Kyle Lobstein, Jose Ortega, Blaine Hardy and Melvin Mercedes are also slated to pitch. Miguel Cabrera, Rajai Davis, Alex Avila and Nick Castellanos are all in the starting lineup. The game will be available online at MLB.TV and will mark the first telecast of the spring for Fox Sports Detroit. MLB Gameday Audio will have the radio call, as will AM 1270 in Detroit.

Miggy belts two homers in blowout of Cardinals

By Jenifer Langosch / MLB.com | 3/10/2014 4:40 P.M. ET

BOX SCORE

JUPITER, Fla. -- With seven extra-base hits, including two home runs by Miguel Cabrera and four RBIs from Steven Moya and Nick Castellanos, the Tigers thrashed the Cardinals, 17-5, on Monday at Roger Dean Stadium.

Detroit scored seven times in the third inning, beginning with a two-run blast by Cabrera for his first home run of the spring. It came on the 56th and final pitch from Cardinals starter Shelby Miller, who allowed five hits and two earned runs in 2 1/3 innings. He struck out four and threw 42 of his pitches for strikes.

"We were really trying to get the ball off the plate and not give [Cabrera] anything to hit, and I just threw it right on the corner," Miller said. "It wasn't the pitch I wanted to throw right there, but it wasn't necessarily a terrible miss. He's obviously a good hitter and did what he did with it."

The game quickly unraveled for the Cardinals after Miller's departure. Lefty Lee Stoppelman came on and gave up the next five runs. Steve Moya had a two-run triple and then scored on a double by Danny Worth. Castellanos and Rajai Davis also drove in runs before the inning ended.

The Tigers did even more damage in the following frame, scoring six times off Cardinals lefty Tyler Lyons before Cabrera punctuated the onslaught with a two-run homer off Keith Butler. Lyons retired the first two batters of the inning before allowing the next seven to reach.

Castellanos stung Lyons with a three-run homer. Worth, Davis and Ezequiel Carrera followed with three consecutive doubles. Detroit entered the day with 23 extra-base hits through its first 12 games. That total included only three home runs, which was matched within the two-inning span.

Cabrera, the reigning American League MVP, improved to 9-for-19 this spring with his three-hit game.

All the run support came behind 2013 AL Cy Young Award winner Max Scherzer, who pitched 4 2/3 innings in his longest start this spring. The Cardinals mustered two hits -- singles from Peter Bourjos and Daniel Descalso -- against the St. Louis native. Scherzer threw 56 pitches, 37 for strikes.

"I thought I threw the ball excellent today," Scherzer said. "I had command of all four of my pitches. I was really happy with my curveball. The pitch that did it for me was when I got Jon Jay in the third inning. To be able to strike him out on a curveball with a 2-2 count, that tells me that pitch is where it needs to be. It's gotten a lot better. That's the improvement I've been looking for."

Pete Kozma got the Cards on the board with an RBI single in a four-run seventh that was capped by Stephen Piscotty's three-run blast. Piscotty is the Cardinals' No. 7 prospect, according to MLB.com.

The Cardinals, who have won only two of their 10 spring games, have been outscored, 28-6, over the last two days.

Up next: Justin Verlander finally gets to face hitters in other uniforms this spring, when the Tigers battle the Blue Jays on Tuesday in a 1:05 p.m. ET start at Joker Marchant Stadium. Verlander, pitching his first game since core muscle surgery in January, is expected to throw two innings, followed by Phil Coke, Joe Nathan, Joba Chamberlain, Al Alburquerque and Bruce Rondon. MLB Gameday Audio will carry it online, while AM 1270 will have the radio broadcast in Detroit.

Verlander sharp for 3 2/3 innings in spring debut
Allows one hit, strikes out two and walks two; Kelly hits two-run homer

By Jason Beck / MLB.com | 3/11/2014 4:01 P.M. ET

BOX SCORE

LAKELAND, Fla. -- Justin Verlander showed no signs of rust in his first start of Spring Training, delivering 3 2/3 scoreless innings with two strikeouts before Brad Glenn's home run in the 10th inning sent the Blue Jays to a 3-2 win over the Tigers on Tuesday afternoon at Joker Marchant Stadium.

Verlander was originally scheduled to make his first start last Thursday against the Phillies before rain washed that game out. He finally took the mound Tuesday and threw his first 11 pitches for strikes, 10 of those pitches fastballs, to retire the side on one hit in the opening inning.

Verlander erased a leadoff walk in the second with a caught stealing, then erased a third-inning walk on a double play after changing speeds on Jays leadoff man Jose Reyes. He dropped a curveball on the corner for a called third strike to Anthony Gose, giving him his lone strikeout.

Verlander allowed one hit with two walks and two strikeouts before reaching his pitch limit. He threw 38 of his 52 pitches for strikes, many of them called. A 10-pitch duel with Maicer Izturis leading off the fourth kept him from finishing the inning, even though Izturis flew out.

Verlander pitched with a lead once Don Kelly hit a two-run homer in the second inning off Jays starter Todd Remond. It marked the fifth home run in three games from a Tigers squad that hit just two in its first 11 games.

Redmond, bidding to take the fifth spot in Toronto's rotation, exercised some damage control, limiting the Tigers to those two runs despite five hits over four innings. He racked up three strikeouts.

Dan Johnson erased Detroit's lead with a two-run homer in a treacherous seventh inning for Joba Chamberlain, who gave up back-to-back two-out walks before inducing a Ryan Goins comebacker. Bruce Rondon scattered two singles in the ninth, but ended Toronto's threat by jamming Steve Tolleson into a double play.

Glenn's first home run of the spring broke the tie against Melvin Mercedes, who paid for a 3-1 fastball that Glenn sent to the left-field berm.

Up next: The Tigers will get their first taste of instant replay and their first live game on MLB Network (also broadcast live on MLB.TV) on Wednesday with their second trip to Tampa, where they'll take on the Yankees in a 1:05 p.m. ET contest at George M. Steinbrenner Field. Anibal Sanchez will pitch there for the second time in six days, followed by Evan Reed, Luke Putkonen, Ian Krol, Jhan Marinez, Luis Marte and Jose Ortega.

Anibal in prime form as Tigers strike fast vs. Yanks
Righty retires first six batters; Crowe helps spur four-run first as part of big day

By Paul Hagen / MLB.com | 3/12/2014 4:44 P.M. ET

BOX SCORE

TAMPA, Fla. -- Anibal Sanchez opened with four strong innings and the Tigers' lineup scored early and often before tying the Yankees, 7-7, in Grapefruit League play Wednesday at George M. Steinbrenner Field.

Sanchez retired the first six batters he faced, and 11 of the first 12. When he left the game, he had given up one run on three hits with no walks and three strikeouts.

"I worked on my fastball and my command, and it felt really good today," Sanchez said. "Everything was working good, especially when I threw my fastball for a strike."

Backup catcher Francisco Cervelli homered twice to center for the Yankees, one off Sanchez leading off the third and one off reliever Evan Reed to start the bottom of the fifth.

After the game's first pitch was delayed 26 minutes by a late-morning deluge, the Tigers didn't waste any time jumping on Yankees starter Hiroki Kuroda in the first.

Ian Kinsler led off with a single up the middle and Don Kelly followed with a sharp base hit to right. Kinsler went to third on the play and scored on an error charged to Yankees third baseman Kelly Johnson for letting the throw skip away, allowing Kinsler to score and Kelly to move up to third.

A sacrifice fly by Victor Martinez brought Kelly home. Alex Avila followed with a single and Tyler Collins flied out. Then came three more hits: Trevor Crowe singled, Nick Castellanos split the outfielders in right-center for a two-run double and Bryan Holaday singled. Pitching coach Larry Rothschild visited the mound. Kuroda got out of the inning when center fielder Mason Williams threw Castellanos out at the plate.

Kuroda ended up allowing six runs on 10 hits in 3 2/3 innings. His first two times through the lineup, 10 of 18 hitters he faced reached base, while two of the outs he recorded came when Tigers runners were thrown out on the bases. Another was a sacrifice fly. That's a sharp contrast to Kuroda's first two Grapefruit League appearances, in which he pitched 4 2/3 shutout innings, allowing just two hits while striking out seven.

Kuroda gave up his final two runs in the third, on a leadoff single by Martinez and back-to-back one-out doubles by Collins and Crowe, who went 2-for-5 with two RBIs and a run on the day.

When Hernan Perez singled with one out in the fourth, it meant that every Tigers starter had a hit.

New York scored three runs against Tigers left-hander Ian Krol in the eighth. The key hit was a two-out, bases-loaded ground-rule double by Zelous Wheeler that drove in a pair of runs.

Zoilo Almonte's two-run homer off Jose Ortega tied the game in the ninth. The teams played a scoreless 10th before calling the game.

Up next: The Tigers will return to Joker Marchant Stadium on Thursday for a 1:05 p.m. ET contest against the Marlins on MLB.TV. Left-hander Drew Smyly is scheduled to make his fourth start of the spring after striking out three in three scoreless innings on Saturday. Among the pitchers slated to follow Smyly are closer Joe Nathan and right-hander Joba Chamberlain, while Rajai Davis, Steve Lombardozzi, Miguel Cabrera, Torii Hunter and Austin Jackson are expected to be in the starting lineup.

Smyly falters in fourth; Holaday plates Tigers' runs

By Jason Beck / MLB.com | 3/13/2014 3:52 P.M. ET

BOX SCORE

LAKELAND, Fla. -- Jake Marisnick doubled in two runs and scored another as the Marlins roughed up Drew Smyly, sending Miami to a 4-2 win over Detroit on Thursday afternoon at Joker Marchant Stadium.

Marisnick's second hit of the day was part of a string of three consecutive hits off Smyly, who later said he has struggled to find the bite on a cutter that serves as a big pitch for him against right-handed hitters. The pitcher escaped a first-inning run following Marisnick's leadoff single, when shortstop Eugenio Suarez threw out Marisnick at the plate.

Smyly eluded major damage at other points, including a running catch by Austin Jackson in deep center field on Christian Yelich's drive and a Giancarlo Stanton flyout to deep left. Garrett Jones broke the string with a slicing double down the left-field line to score Yelich in the third inning.

The hit was Jones' first off a lefty this spring. The left-handed hitter is in line for more playing time against southpaws, off whom he was 0-for-8 entering the day.

Smyly's damage control ran out in the fourth, when Ed Lucas' single and Adeiny Hechavarria's double off the right-field fence set up Marisnick. Yelich's walk ended Smyly's afternoon, then Stanton hit a sac fly off Jose Alvarez.

Backup catcher Bryan Holaday plated both Tigers runs, with a second-inning sac fly scoring Jackson and a fourth-inning infield single plating Torii Hunter.

Smyly gave up four runs on eight hits over 3 1/3 innings, walking two and striking out one. Marlins counterpart Jacob Turner, who lost out to Smyly for a rotation spot in Tigers camp in 2012, earned the win with four solid innings.

Up next: Phil Coke, Al Alburquerque and Bruce Rondon get their latest chances to determine their fit in the Tigers' bullpen when they pitch in relief of Rick Porcello against the Nationals on Friday. Game time is 1:05 p.m. ET at Joker Marchant Stadium, as the Tigers continue their three-game homestand. Taylor Jordan, a rumored Tigers trade target before Detroit acquired Robbie Ray in the Doug Fister deal, is scheduled to start for Washington.

Hunter's four hits lead victorious outburst
Castellanos 3-for-4 with two RBIs as Tigers swat 22 hits; Porcello allows five runs

By Jason Beck / MLB.com | 3/14/2014 4:39 P.M. ET

BOX SCORE

LAKELAND, Fla. -- Torii Hunter's 4-for-4 performance spearheaded a 22-hit onslaught of singles and doubles from the Tigers, who scored nine runs over the third and fourth innings en route to a 12-6 win over the Nationals on Friday at Joker Marchant Stadium.

The hit parade ranged from Austin Jackson and Nick Castellanos doubling off the left-field wall to Rajai Davis turning a blooper to right field into two bases. The collective effort marked the second time in five days the Tigers put up double digits in runs.

It was an impressive amount of work considering how well Nationals starter Taylor Jordan held down Detroit's lineup the first time through the order. Jordan, once rumored to be a Tigers target during offseason trade talk before the Tigers acquired Robbie Ray in the Doug Fister trade, held Detroit to a Hunter single and a Castellanos double over two shutout innings before Detroit broke out against him in the third.

Hunter, Victor Martinez, Jackson and Castellanos all had RBI hits in the third off Jordan, turning a 1-0 deficit into a 4-1 lead, before five consecutive one-out hits broke open the game in the fourth. That included Hunter's line-drive RBI double into the right-field corner off Luis Ayala, plus Davis' RBI single off Zach Jackson.

Hunter's fourth hit came in the fifth inning with a line drive to left-center. After Miguel Cabrera singled him over to second base, Hunter swiped third in a double-steal with pinch-runner Steve Lombardozzi, who has been part of three double-steals this year.

Jordan gave up four runs on seven hits over three innings. Ayala yielded five runs on six hits in two-thirds of an inning. The collective support was more than enough for Rick Porcello, who gave up five runs on seven hits over four-plus innings.

Porcello gave up a Nate McLouth RBI double in the first inning before Tyler Moore turned on a high sinker for a two-run homer in the fourth. Porcello sat down for close to 45 minutes during the Tigers' fourth-inning rally before giving up back-to-back hits in the fifth, including a Jamey Carroll RBI triple.

Phil Coke limited the damage by retiring the top of the Nationals' lineup in order from there before Scott Hairston homered off Al Alburquerque in the sixth.

Up next: Max Scherzer tries to continue his dominant spring opposite childhood teammate Lucas Harrell, while the Tigers conclude their three-game homestand with a 1:05 p.m. ET game against the Astros on Saturday at Joker Marchant Stadium, live on Gameday Audio. Scherzer has tossed 7 2/3 shutout innings and allowed three hits over his last two outings, walking one and striking out eight. Blaine Hardy, Luke Putkonen, Ian Krol and Jhan Marinez are also slated to pitch for Detroit. Harrell will make the start for the Astros.

Kinsler's first spring blasts lead Tigers' rampage
Hunter, Worth chip in three RBIs apiece in win over Houston

By Jason Beck / MLB.com | 3/15/2014 4:30 P.M. ET

BOX SCORE

LAKELAND, Fla. -- Ian Kinsler's two-run home run, the first of two blasts for him on the day, and Torii Hunter's two-run double led a Tigers onslaught against Astros starter Lucas Harrell, en route to a 14-3 Detroit victory on Saturday afternoon at Joker Marchant Stadium.

Kinsler's first two home runs of the spring were part of a 3-for-3 afternoon with three runs scored and four RBIs. His lone hit that didn't clear the lef23:50:00t-field fence was an RBI bloop single to right field as part of a six-run, eight-hit opening inning. It also led a string of five consecutive hits off Harrell, as the Tigers batted around.

None of those first-inning hits went for more than a double. Once Harrell took the mound for his second inning, the power broke out, starting with a Tyler Collins triple and punctuated by Kinsler's drive to the left-field berm.

Danny Worth's RBI triple ended the afternoon for Harrell, who gave up 10 runs (nine earned) on 12 hits over 1 2/3 innings. Last year's American League leader in walks did not issue a free pass.

"I felt like that was a big thing," Harrell said. "I didn't walk anybody today. So I was throwing a lot of strikes, I was throwing a lot of first-pitch strikes and a lot of pitches down [in] the zone. It was just one of those days ... where the snowball got rolling and they started getting good hits."

Those hits benefited Harrell's former travel-ball teammate, Max Scherzer. Five days after the Tigers put up 17 runs of support for the reigning AL Cy Young winner against the Cardinals, Scherzer had a 10-1 lead by the third inning. He gave up runs in the second, third and fourth innings -- including Robbie Grossman's solo homer, but exercised some damage control.

Marc Knauss' leadoff triple and Jesus Guzman's RBI single fueled a roll of three consecutive Houston hits in the second. But Scherzer recovered to strike out the side in order from there, including a called third strike on Carlos Corporan.

"I wasn't sharp today," Scherzer said. "They did a good job of battling me, [hitting] some pitches. But this is an outing I get to learn a lot from. It's good to get battle tested in the spring, get outings like this where they're hitting you around and having good ABs against you. It forces you to keep relentlessly on the attack.

"I think the biggest thing I'm happy about is, even in a battle-tested game, I didn't walk anybody. That's a great sign."

Collins fell a double shy of the cycle, going 3-for-5 with his second home run of the spring. Worth, a non-roster candidate for playing time at shortstop with Jose Iglesias out, went 3-for-4 with three RBIs.

Up next: Justin Verlander will try to pick up where he left off on Tuesday, as he makes his second start of the spring on Sunday against the Nationals. Game time is 1:05 p.m. ET at Space Coast Stadium in Viera. Rajai Davis, Kinsler, Victor Martinez and Nick Castellanos are scheduled to play, while Evan Reed, Bruce Rondon, Al Alburquerque and Jose Ortega are slated to pitch in relief. Jordan Zimmermann will start for Washington. Fans can view the game on MLB.TV or listen to the game on 97.1 FM in Detroit and on Gameday Audio.

Verlander dominates before Worth delivers late
Tigers ace hurls five scoreless innings; infielder hits clutch RBI double vs. Nats

By Bill Ladson / MLB.com | 3/16/2014 3:57 P.M. ET

BOX SCORE

VIERA, Fla. -- The Nationals and Tigers found themselves in a pitchers' duel at Space Coast Stadium on Sunday afternoon. When it was over, the Tigers edged the Nationals, 2-1, in front of 6,836 fans.

The game was tied at 1 when Detroit scored the go-ahead run in the top of the eighth inning against reliever Michael Gonzalez. Steve Lombardozzi led off with a single, then stole second and third base before scoring on a double by Danny Worth.

Tigers ace Justin Verlander was solid, pitching five shutout innings, allowing one hit and striking out four batters. The hit came in the fifth inning when Adam LaRoche singled to center field.

Verlander was given a 1-0 lead in the first inning. With right-hander Jordan Zimmermann on the mound, Rajai Davis led off with a single and Ian Kinsler was hit by a pitch. Davis and Kinsler pulled off a double steal before Don Kelly grounded out, scoring Davis.

Zimmermann ended up having another solid outing, allowing just the one run in four innings. After Zimmermann left the game, the Nationals received solid performances from left-handers Sammy Solis and Xavier Cedeno, both of whom are battling for spots in the bullpen.

The Nationals tied the score at 1 in the sixth inning. With right-hander Evan Reed on the mound for Detroit, Jeff Kobernus scored on a passed ball by catcher Bryan Holaday.

Up next: Miguel Cabrera, Torii Hunter, Alex Avila and Austin Jackson are among the starters slated to be in the lineup behind Anibal Sanchez as the Tigers host the Nationals on Monday at Joker Marchant Stadium. Ian Krol, Al Alburquerque, Blaine Hardy and Luke Putkonen are all scheduled to pitch in relief, while Hernan Perez gets the start at short. The game is scheduled for 1:05 p.m. ET and will be on Gameday Audio.

Miggy extends torrid Grapefruit League tear

By Anthony DiComo / MLB.com | 3/18/2014 4:42 P.M. ET

BOX SCORE

PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. -- Spring, summer, autumn -- it simply does not matter. Miguel Cabrera can hit any time of year.

Cabrera's Grapefruit League tear continued on Tuesday with a solo homer in Detroit's 5-4 loss to the Mets at Tradition Field, giving him three home runs in 35 spring at-bats. Finishing 1-for-3 at the plate, he actually lowered his batting average, to an even .400.

Anchoring a lineup composed mostly of Minor Leaguers and reserve players, Cabrera also added a first-inning sacrifice fly against Mets starter Daisuke Matsuzaka, who allowed four runs in five innings. Despite the rough outing, Matsuzaka struck out five and continues to zero in on the fifth starter's job.

Matsuzaka would have taken the loss had the Mets not rallied in the fifth and sixth innings, finally winning on Andrew Brown's walk-off single in the ninth. Chris Young sparked the comeback with a run-scoring double off reliever Jose Alvarez, an inning before Wilmer Flores brought the Mets within one on an RBI single. Alvarez then threw a wild pitch, allowing Eric Campbell to race home with the tying run.

Tigers starter Kyle Lobstein allowed one run over 2 2/3 innings, lowering his spring ERA to 4.66.

Mets relievers Jeurys Familia and Miguel Socolovich each added a scoreless inning, upping their combined total to 13 shutout frames this spring.

Flores played the entire game at shortstop for the Mets, ranging to his right and making a strong throw across the diamond to rob Steve Lombardozzi of a hit in the ninth.

Up next: The Tigers have their lone off-day of the spring on Wednesday, but Rick Porcello has a day of work on the back fields at Tigertown. He's scheduled to pitch in a Minor League game to stay on turn for his first start of the spring. The full squad returns to action at 1:05 p.m. ET on Thursday, when Max Scherzer makes his next-to-last start of the spring against the Nationals at Space Coast Stadium in Viera, Fla. Ian Kinsler, Alex Avila and Austin Jackson are among the Tigers scheduled for the lineup.

Detroit delivers double-digit runs vs. Toronto

By Jason Beck / MLB.com | 3/18/2014 4:45 P.M. ET

BOX SCORE

LAKELAND, Fla. -- Ian Kinsler's third home run of the spring and Don Kelly's grand slam led the Tigers to their third double-digit outburst in four games, earning their fourth consecutive win with an 18-4 decision over the Blue Jays on Tuesday afternoon at Joker Marchant Stadium.

After three encouraging outings raised the Blue Jays' hopes that former ace Ricky Romero could build his confidence, the once-promising left-hander battled command troubles for much of his 2 2/3 innings. He walked five batters, including his final four of the afternoon, hit Alex Avila in the shoulder with a curveball and tossed two wild pitches. Just 23 of his 57 pitches went for strikes.

Romero entered the day with seven innings of one-run ball this spring despite five walks, thanks in part to six strikeouts.

"I think it was just a matter of not throwing strikes. I think that I just got in trouble with that, falling behind in counts," Romero said. "It was a battle. I've just got to keep moving forward."

Three of the eight outs Romero recorded came on the basepaths, including a pair of runners caught off second for both of his outs in his third and final inning. Three of his seven balls put in play went for base hits, including Austin Jackson's two-run homer in the second inning.

Despite drawing four consecutive walks in the third inning, Detroit scored its lone run that frame when Hernan Perez -- who'd hit a leadoff triple -- bolted home on a pitch in the dirt. Reliever Jeremy Jeffress prevented further damage to Romero by striking out Avila but then gave up three walks himself in the fourth.

The bulk of the damage in the fifth inning came off promising Jays prospect Marcus Stroman, who retired one of the eight batters he faced. Three straight singles following Kinsler's leadoff walk plated one run and loaded the bases for Kelly, who jumped on a full-count fastball and sent it deep to right-center for his second homer of the spring.

Kinsler came back up later in the fifth and turned on a Marcus Walden offering, sending it to the left-field berm to score Ben Guez and Torii Hunter.

Guez, who crossed the street from Minor League camp for a rare start with Rajai Davis scratched as a precaution for his sore right hamstring, went 3-for-3 with two walks. Jackson went 2-for-5 with three runs scored, raising his batting average for the spring to .459.

The support was plenty for Tigers starter Drew Smyly, who gave up two hits and a walk along his way to five scoreless innings, with three strikeouts, against a lineup that featured Jose Bautista, Jose Reyes, Edwin Encarnacion, Brett Lawrie and Melky Cabrera.

Kinsler, Avila and Jackson are among the Tigers scheduled for the lineup.

Scherzer shows strikeout stuff, but touched up
Tigers starter fans eight, but allows five runs on seven hits, including homer, in 5 2/3

By Andrew Simon / MLB.com | 3/20/2014 3:55 P.M. ET

BOX SCORE

VIERA, Fla. -- Stephen Strasburg got the better of Max Scherzer in a star-studded pitching battle on Thursday afternoon at Space Coast Stadium, as the Nationals beat the Tigers, 8-1.

Strasburg, named Washington's Opening Day starter the previous night, responded with five scoreless innings. His offense backed him up, with Ian Desmond providing the big blow with a two-run home run off Scherzer.

Strasburg mostly sailed through the Tigers' lineup, throwing 46 of his 66 pitches for strikes. He gave up three hits, walked one and struck out five.

The big right-hander only retired the side in order once but induced two double plays and saw a runner caught stealing, a good sign for a pitcher who has worked to hold runners more effectively. He got in one jam, putting runners at second and third with one out in the fifth, but struck out Nick Castellanos and retired Trevor Crowe on a groundout.

"I'm just trying to go out there and commit to every pitch and see what happens," Strasburg said.

Scherzer, who will yield Detroit's Opening Day start to Justin Verlander, gave up five runs on seven hits in 5 2/3 innings, although he struck out eight without a walk.

The Nats struck against the reigning American League Cy Young Award winner in the third, after Danny Espinosa led off with a single. Following a Strasburg sacrifice bunt, Denard Span hit a grounder up the middle that took shortstop Danny Worth into center field and allowed Espinosa to score, narrowly avoiding a tag from catcher Alex Avila. One batter later, Desmond launched a pitch well over the wall in left-center field for a two-run shot.

"Overall, I threw the ball pretty well. I just didn't execute pitches," said Scherzer. "The shape of all my pitches, the break, it's all there. Now I'm just trying to catch up on the execution. But to be able to keep going out and not walk anybody in basically six innings, that's a really good sign."

Tigers left fielder Tyler Collins saved another homer in the fifth, reaching over the wall to pull back a long drive from pinch-hitter Chris Snyder. Scherzer exited in the sixth after giving up an RBI triple to Ryan Zimmerman and an RBI single to Jose Lobaton.

Detroit pushed across a run in the sixth against Drew Storen on an RBI single by Victor Martinez.

Lobaton added a two-run double after Anthony Rendon's RBI single during a three-run eighth against Tigers reliever Blaine Hardy.

Up next: The Tigers have another road tilt on Friday, as they will face a Braves split squad at 1:05 p.m. ET at Champion Stadium, live on MLB.TV. Opening Day starter Verlander will take the mound against Atlanta's Julio Teheran, having tossed 8 2/3 scoreless innings this spring, allowing only two hits. Phil Coke, Jose Ortega, Jhan Marinez and Evan Reed also are scheduled to pitch, and Detroit will have most of its regulars in the lineup.
