Pitching matchup

GDT104: 7/28/13 - DET (58-45) VS PHI (49-55) - 1:08 p.m. ET Ph_519144
Tigers: RHP Rick Porcello (7-6, 4.49 ERA)

Porcello admitted he was a little rusty in his first start out of the break -- throwing 25 pitches in the first inning -- but he settled down to throw a remarkably efficient seven innings of shutout ball against the White Sox.

GDT104: 7/28/13 - DET (58-45) VS PHI (49-55) - 1:08 p.m. ET Ph_543643
Phillies: RHP Jonathan Pettibone (5-4, 3.97 ERA)

Pettibone allowed three runs, seven hits, three walks and struck out four in five innings Tuesday in a loss to St. Louis. He kept the Phillies close with a chance to win, but the club managed just one run in a 4-1 loss.

PREVIEW

Porcello set to deal in Tigers' bid to sweep Phillies
Pettibone looks to help Philadelphia snap seven-game skid in finale

By William Boor / MLB.com | 7/27/2013 11:45 PM ET

Not much has gone right for the Phillies on their road trip.

After taking the opener against the Mets during a nine-game trip, the Phillies have lost seven straight and will turn to Jonathan Pettibone as they look to avoid being swept for the second time in as many series.

Pettibone (5-4, 3.97 ERA) allowed three runs on seven hits over fine innings in his last start -- a loss to the Cardinals.

"They were patient early on when I was kind of in control," Pettibone said after the outing. "Then, when things started going the other way, they started to be more aggressive, a couple of first-pitch knocks and stuff. They kind of teeter-tottered throughout the game, staying aggressive, then remaining patient. They have a good lineup throughout, and they got the best of us."

As the Phillies continue to search for answers, the Tigers head into Sunday's series finale having won six of their last seven and sitting at 13 games over .500.

The Tigers are certainly playing well at the moment and adding Miguel Cabrera back into Saturday's lineup energized a team that is continuing a push to the postseason.

Detroit will hand the ball to Rick Porcello on Sunday in search of a three-game sweep, following Saturday's 10-0 blowout at Comerica Park.

Porcello has a 4.37 career ERA in Interleague Play, but has been dominant in July with a 1.35 ERA and 3-0 record.

However, the time off for the All-Star break caused him to be a bit rusty in his last outing.

"That first inning was pretty shaky," Porcello said Tuesday. "I think just not being on the mound in a game situation for a while was causing me to kind of be off rhythm. It felt a little foreign, but I battled through it and the guys made some outstanding plays behind me that really helped me out."

Phillies: Club busy as Trade Deadline looms
• The Phillies have lost seven straight and are a season-high six games below .500, but that doesn't mean the club is going to blow up the roster prior to Wednesday's 4 p.m. ET non-waiver Trade Deadline.

"I think our plan is to be competitive and in the mix on an annual basis," assistant general manager Scott Proefrock said. "I think all the different options that we've considered or talked about internally that I've been a part of have been geared toward just that, remaining competitive and being in the mix continually. We owe that to our fans and we certainly have the wherewithal to be in the mix to do that."

Even if the Phillies do wind up dealing a few key pieces, it appears they are not going into a total rebuilding mode and will look to win in the immediate future.

Tigers: Cabrera returns to lineup
When the Tigers took the field for Saturday's contest, there was a familiar face batting third and playing third.

After missing four games with a hip injury, Miguel Cabrera rejoined the Tigers' lineup, although he admittedly only feels about 70 percent.

"It was good hitting, fielding," Cabrera said prior to Saturday's 10-0 win. "It bothered me running."

Cabrera made his presence felt on Saturday as he went 2-for-3 with three RBIs and a home run in his first at-bat.

Worth noting
• Pettibone has never faced the Tigers.

• Although Porcello has never started a game against the Phillies, he has faced a few of their hitters.

Delmon Young and Michael Young have faced Porcello on numerous occasions. Delmon is 8-for-22 (.364) while Michael is 7-for-18 (.389) against the right-hander.
