| GDT90: 7/10/13 - DET (49-40) VS CWS (35-52) - 7:08 p.m. ET --- VS --- Detroit Tigers VS Chicago White SoxWednesday, July 10, 2013 Comerica Park, Detroit, MI Game Time - 7:08 p.m. EDT ______________________________________ Pitching matchup Tigers: RHP Rick Porcello (5-6, 4.82 ERA)Unless MLB hears Porcello's appeal early next week, he'll make his final start before the break against a White Sox squad he beat three times in four tries last season. He tossed seven scoreless innings against Cleveland on Friday. White Sox: RHP Dylan Axelrod (3-5, 4.97 ERA)It simply wasn't Axelrod's night on Friday at Tropicana Field, as the Rays knocked him out after 1 2/3 innings. Axelrod, who has six straight no-decisions and has not won since May 26, gave up five runs on nine hits that included two homers. ______________________________________
PREVIEW White Sox hope offense stays awake in DetroitAxelrod matches up with Porcello at Comerica ParkBy Michael Periatt / MLB.com | 7/10/2013 12:02 AM ET Maybe this year will be different. Having lost 15 of their last 18 games at Comerica Park entering Tuesday, the White Sox have struggled mightily in Detroit the last two seasons. But in their first of 19 meetings this year, the White Sox roughed up Justin Verlander and the Tigers en route to a 11-4 victory Tuesday night in what Chicago hopes will be the beginning of a brighter future against its division rivals. To continue the success, the White Sox will have to buck more recent history Wednesday night, when the Tigers will send Rick Porcello to the mound to face Dylan Axelrod. Porcello was extremely effective in his four starts against the White Sox last season, never giving up more than three runs and posting a 1.98 ERA against them. Despite the success, Porcello, who is 5-6 with a 4.82 ERA on the year, said last season won't have any effect on his performance or approach on Wednesday. "No, because every time out there is different, and this is a completely different year now," he said. "The adjustments that they make, you have to be ready for. Every game is different, anything can happen on any given day. So no, I'm going to go out there and be really aggressive. I don't think anything in the past gives or takes away what my preparation is for them tomorrow. I'm going to go out there like I treat any other team." No team in the American League has scored fewer runs than the White Sox, but with a season-high 23 hits on Tuesday night, including a seven-run eighth inning, the Chicago lineup showed it's perfectly capable of putting runs on the board in a hurry. Porcello said he isn't overlooking the White Sox bats and especially their potential for power. "At any given time, they have a lot of guys that can hit for power," he said. "Adam Dunn has [24] home runs, he's hitting the ball with power. They've got some guys that can hurt you, so you really have to make good pitches and stay on the top of your game throughout." It's Axelrod's turn in the White Sox rotation Wednesday night, meaning he'll have to face a Detroit lineup that leads the AL in hits and batting average and ranks second in runs scored. Axelrod is coming off his worst start of the year, an outing in which he surrendered five runs and didn't make it out of the second inning against the Rays. "Yeah, I guess I threw some balls up, and they are hot right now," Axelrod said of the start. "So, just try to turn the page and think about my next start. Maybe too much of the plate at times. I didn't feel like I was throwing horrible pitches, but it was obviously not good enough." White Sox: Peavy eyes return before breakJake Peavy says he's healthy enough to return to the White Sox rotation, but he'll likely have to make a rehab start first. The right-hander, recovering from a fractured rib in his left side, threw 76 pitches in a simulated game Tuesday, meaning he could pitch again on Sunday. If Peavy had his way, the outing would be against the Phillies as part of Chicago's last game before the All-Star break, but chances are he'll be in Double-A Birmingham for a Minor League rehab assignment. "I'm going to hold on to it until I get on that flight. You know me," said Peavy. "But I certainly respect [White Sox general manager] Rick [Hahn] and the front office and the coaching staff. Whatever they think is best, at the end of the day, I'm going to have to bow to that." Tigers: Infante placed on DLThe Tigers decided not to take any chances with Omar Infante, placing the infielder on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to Thursday. Infante, who sprained his left ankle on a hard slide, will be eligible to return July 19, the Tigers' first game after the All-Star break. "He'll be ready to go [after the All-Star break]," manager Jim Leyland said Tuesday. "It's just still lingering and pretty sore. He's not going to be ready for at least three days, and we've only got six more [games before the All-Star break], so why not get him all the way back?" To fill his roster spot, the Tigers recalled Double-A second baseman Hernan Perez. Worth Noting• Miguel Cabrera smashed his 29th home run of the season Tuesday, giving him the most homers by a Tiger before the All-Star break in franchise history. He leads the Major Leagues with 92 RBIs. • The Tigers have a league-leading six representatives in this year's All-Star Game. The White Sox have two. • Of Chicago's 87 games this season, 67 have been decided by three runs or fewer. Michael Periatt is an associate reporter for MLB.com.
