PREVIEW
Halos have brooms ready behind Weaver in DetroitAce prepares for Comerica fans as Tigers send Fister to mound in finaleBy William Boor / MLB.com | 6/26/2013 11:15 PM ET
As the Angels attempt to sweep the Tigers for the second time this season, Jered Weaver will try to regain his form from when he won 20 games in 2012 and posted a 2.41 ERA in 2011.
Thursday's start will not only provide a chance for Weaver to improve his 1-4 record and lower his 4.65 ERA, but it will also be the first time the ace pitches in Detroit since a heated contest two years ago.
On July 31, 2011, Weaver and Justin Verlander were locked in a pitchers' duel. When Magglio Ordonez admired his home run, it struck a nerve in Weaver. Later in the game, Carlos Guillen homered an started down Weaver which further aggravated the right-hander. The next pitch went over Alex Avila's head and Weaver was promptly ejected.
"It's all water under the bridge," Weaver told CBS Detroit prior to Wednesday's game. "I don't think there are many guys that are on the team anymore … It's all done and over with now, but we will see how the fans react."
The fans are likely to boo Weaver, but Torii Hunter -- a member of the Angels at the time -- doesn't think it will be much of an issue among the players on either team.
"That was a heated ballgame, man, on both sides," Hunter said. "I know Guillen's not here anymore. Of course, I'm pretty sure that feud has died down a lot, but I don't know about the fans -- they probably don't like Weaver."
Weaver will be opposed by Doug Fister, who struggled in his last start -- six runs on 11 hits in 3 1/3 innings. But he had thrown five consecutive quality starts before that and has thrown at least seven innings in four of his last five starts against the Angels.
Angels: Hanson scratched from start• Right-handed pitcher Tommy Hanson was scheduled to start Wednesdays' game between the Angels and Tigers, but was scratched with tightness in his right forearm.
Billy Buckner, recently called up from Triple-A, made the start, but Hanson's injury leaves the Angels' rotation with a few question marks as Jerome Williams is already filling in for Jason Vargas, who is on the disabled list with blood clots.
Hanson is 4-2 with a 5.10 ERA this season and has already missed time while grieving the loss of his stepbrother.
• The Angels sub-.500 start has been a mystery to most, but general manager Jerry Dipoto doesn't foresee any drastic changes at the July 31 non-waiver Trade Deadline.
"We are not a buyer, we are not a seller," Dipoto said. "We're the Angels, who are sitting here trying to win a game today. Our sense of urgency has to be today, tomorrow and every day."
Tigers: Sanchez to throw bullpen• Tigers starter Anibal Sanchez is currently on the disabled list with a right shoulder strain, but he may be nearing a return.
Sanchez will throw a bullpen session on Thursday, and if all goes well, he could start Monday's game against the Blue Jays.
Throughout Sanchez's rehab, the right-hander has felt fine, but the Tigers do not want to force him to come back too soon and risk further damage.
• The Tigers won't know which of their Major Leaguers are All-Stars for another week and a half, but recently found out four prospects were selected for the 2013 Eastern League All-Star Game.
Catcher James McCann -- the Tigers' top pick in the 2011 First-Year Player Draft -- second baseman Herman Perez, right-hander Warwick Saupold and left-hander Will Startup were all selected from Double-A Erie.
The Eastern League All-Star Game takes place at New Britain Stadium on July 10.
Worth noting• Fister has made eight starts against the Angels in his career and has posted a 2-3 record with a 3.05 ERA.
• Jhonny Peralta has had success against Weaver throughout his career. In 25 at-bats, Peralta is hitting .360 with six extra-base hits.
