Tigers Press Release

12/2/2013 9:05 P.M. ET
Detroit Tigers acquire Robbie Ray, Ian Krol and Steve Lombardozzi from Washington Nationals in exchange for Doug Fister

DETROIT -- The Detroit Tigers announced tonight that the club has acquired lefthanded starter Robbie Ray, lefthanded reliever Ian Krol and utility player Steve Lombardozzi from the Washington Nationals in exchange for righthanded starter Doug Fister.

"We are excited to be adding three solid players to the organization," said Tigers President, CEO and General Manager, David Dombrowski. "Robbie is a premium pitching prospect, Ian adds a quality lefthanded young arm for the bullpen and Steve provides our ballclub with versatility in several roles as a switch-hitting utility-man. This affords us the opportunity to move the lefthanded arm of Drew Smyly into the starting rotation where we are confident he will do well. We would like to thank Doug for everything he has done for the Tigers organization. He is an exceptional player and individual and we wish him all the best going forward."

Ray, 22, split the season between Single A Potomac and Double A Harrisburg. He posted a 6-3 record, 3.11 ERA (84.0IP/29ER) and 100 strikeouts in 16 games started with Potomac. He started in 11 games for Harrisburg, posting a 5-2 record, 3.72 ERA (58.0IP/24ER) and 60 strikeouts. Originally drafted in the 12th round of the 2010 MLB First-Year Player Draft by the Nationals, he was rated as the #5 prospect in the Washington organization for 2014 by Baseball America.

Lefthanded reliever Krol, 22, made his Major League debut on June 5 with the Nationals after being acquired from Oakland before the start of the 2013 season. He appeared in 32 games for Washington during the 2013 season, posting a 2-1 record, 3.95 ERA (27.1IP/12ER) and 22 strikeouts. He appeared in 26 games between Double A Harrisburg and Triple A Syracuse, posting a 1-1 record, 1.21 ERA (29.2IP/4ER) and 36 strikeouts.

Lombardozzi, the 25-year-old switch-hitter, batted .259 (75x290) with 15 doubles, one triple, two home runs and 22 RBI in 118 games played in 2013. He saw action at second base (48 games), third base (four games) and left field (23 games) this season for the Nationals, compiling a .989 fielding percentage. He has hit .264 (186x705) with 32 doubles, four triples, five home runs and 50 RBI in 257 games over three seasons with the Nationals at the Major League level.

Fister, 29, posted a 14-9 record, 3.67 ERA (208.2IP/85ER) and 159 strikeouts in 33 appearances (32 games started) for the Tigers in 2013. After being acquired from the Seattle Mariners on July 30, 2011, Fister posted a 32-20 record, 3.29 ERA (440.2IP/161ER) and 353 strikeouts in 70 appearances (68 games started) with the Tigers.

Ray tosses 8 1/3 shutout innings at Triple-A

By Jason Beck and Teddy Cahill / MLB.com | 4/23/2014 10:34 P.M. ET

Left-hander Robbie Ray, the Tigers' No. 2 prospect and No. 95 overall, according to MLB.com, threw 8 1/3 scoreless innings Wednesday night as Triple-A Toledo defeated Indianapolis, 2-0.

Ray, who was acquired from the Nationals in an offseason trade for Doug Fister, entered the ninth with a chance to complete his second career shutout. But a 12-pitch at-bat by Adalberto Santos that ended in a strikeout to lead off the inning upped Ray's pitch count to 107 and prompted manager Larry Parrish to go to his bullpen.

Ray finished his night with seven strikeouts. He walked one batter and allowed four hits. He silenced a lineup that included several players with big league experience, as well as the red-hot Gregory Polanco, the Pirates' top prospect.

Catcher James McCann and third baseman Mike Hessman both hit solo home runs to give Ray all the offense he needed. It was the fifth homer of the season for McCann, the Tigers' No. 9 prospect.

With the victory, Ray improved to 2-2 as a member of the Tigers organization. He has a 1.93 ERA and a 16-to-5 strikeout-to-walk ratio in 23 1/3 innings.

Top Tigers prospect Ray to start Tuesday

By Jason Beck / MLB.com | 4/30/2014 1:19 P.M. ET

CHICAGO -- The Tigers acquired prospect Robbie Ray in last fall's Doug Fister trade with an eye toward their rotation of the future. With Anibal Sanchez on the disabled list, Detroit in need of a spot starter and Ray tearing up batting orders at Triple-A Toledo, the future is coming a little sooner than expected.

The Tigers made official what had been suspected for the past few days, announcing Ray as their scheduled starter for Tuesday's game against the Astros at Comerica Park. That's the day they'll finally need a fifth starter again after going more than a week without one thanks to off-days, rainouts and the Sanchez injury.

The 22-year-old left-hander will make his Major League debut a year after he was pitching in High Class A ball in the Nationals' system. He had 11 starts at the Double-A level when Detroit acquired him as the prospect centerpiece in the much-scrutinized Fister trade.

The Tigers made an aggressive promotion with Ray by putting him at Triple-A Toledo to open this season. After five starts for the Mud Hens, he has handled International League hitters far beyond his age.

Ray picked up his third win of the season Tuesday with five shutout innings and five strikeouts, extending his scoreless streak to 16 1/3 innings over his last three outings. He fell two outs shy of a shutout April 23, allowing four hits and a walk with seven strikeouts against a talented Indianapolis squad that includes Pirates prospect Gregory Polanco.

Tigers manager Brad Ausmus said Wednesday that Ray will pitch one inning for Toledo on Friday, giving him one final bit of preparation on his normal turn while not tiring him out ahead of his start three days later.

"He's pitched very well for them his last few starts," Ausmus said. "He's been outstanding. And with Sanchez down, we need someone to fill his slot and hopefully do it well.

"He's still learning, and he's certainly not a finished product, even now. We think he's got the stuff to be able to get big-league hitters out, but he's definitely still in the learning process as a pitcher."

The Astros entered Wednesday batting about 40 points higher against left-handers (.235) than righties (.195), but for a low batting average nonetheless. As opponents go, it's a relatively good setup for a young pitcher to break into the big leagues.

If all goes well and the Tigers don't have another rainout beforehand, Ray would presumably get one more start against the Twins at Comerica Park on May 11. Sanchez is eligible to come off the disabled list the next day.

Coincidentally, Ray will make his Major League debut the day before Fister makes his Nationals debut. Fister opened the season on the disabled list with a right lat strain.

The Tigers will need to make roster moves to fit Ray on both the 25- and 40-man rosters. Most likely, they'll take care of the 25-man roster by dropping their bullpen back to seven relievers. The 40-man move is more complicated, since they've already put Bruce Rondon, Jose Iglesias and Andy Dirks on the 60-day DL.

Dombrowski on Ray: “We think he projects to be at least a No. 3 starter”
BECK'S BLOG
Posted on May 1, 2014 at 4:17 pm

Tigers president/GM Dave Dombrowski went on ESPN’s Baseball Tonight podcast with Buster Olney to talk about several different subjects around his club, including the impending promotion of Robbie Ray to fill Anibal Sanchez’s rotation spot.

The immediate sentiments were similar to what Brad Ausmus said Wednesday: He needs more seasoning before he’s truly ready for the big leagues, but he’s the best option they have to fill the void. Long-term, Dombrowski said Ray projects to be at least a mid-rotation starter.

“For us the other day, he’s throwing 93-94 late into the ballgame, even touching 95,” Dombrowski told Olney. “He’s got a real good changeup. He throws strikes. His curveball’s a developing pitch. He’s gone back and forth at times between sliders and curveballs early in his career. It’s a situation where we like his makeup.

“We like a lot of things about him. Apparently other organizations didn’t like him as much as we did, because we had him up there high in our evaluation process. But we’re very happy with him and we’re glad that we have him. We think he projects to be at least a number three starter as the future goes on, not necessarily now because he’s still in a development stage. Ideally he’d have a little more time before he’d come up here, but we do have the need next week and he’s thrown the ball very well at Triple-A. So we’ll give him an opportunity and we think he’ll give us a chance to win the ballgame.”

The projection sentiment is similar to what Dombrowski said going into Spring Training, maybe slightly different with the “at least” condition. For those looking at Ray’s performance so far at Triple-A Toledo and seeing him as potentially Detroit’s next front-line arm, it might be a splash of cool water. For those who are wondering what Detroit’s rotation will look like long-term if Max Scherzer doesn’t stick around and Rick Porcello eventually goes, tucking in Ray after Justin Verlander and Anibal Sanchez isn’t bad.

The podcast is available on ESPN’s site. It includes a lot of discussion on Scherzer’s start to the season and where he slots on the open market, plus George Carlin’s bit comparing baseball to football.

Prospect Knebel at the ready in first Majors experience

By Matt Slovin / MLB.com | 5/24/2014 1:53 A.M. ET

DETROIT -- Skip Johnson, the pitching coach at the University of Texas, taught the newest member of the Tigers a lesson that dictates his approach on the mound.

"Fear no man. Fear no hitter," said Corey Knebel, Detroit's 39th overall selection in last year's First-Year Player Draft. "That's just what I kind of live by. I just go out there and think that I'm better."

Knebel's ability to abide by his old mentor's dictum will be put to the test as he prepares for his Major League debut. In fact, for whatever reason, the young southpaw was already sweating when setup man Joba Chamberlain came up to greet him upon his arrival in the clubhouse Friday.

"Why you sweating?" Chamberlain teased. "You already nervous?"

If Knebel is nervous, and he admits he will be when he takes the mound for the first time, it's tough to blame him, considering the lofty expectations placed upon the Tigers' No. 5 prospect. His Detroit welcome comes after a quick scurry up the ranks of the Tigers' Minor League system. The 22-year-old Texas native, who grew up a fan of the Astros while Tigers manager Brad Ausmus played in Houston, said he surprised even himself at how fast he climbed.

Ausmus plans to exercise caution, if possible, in using Knebel, but noted his experience pitching for a major college program should make him "a bit more stable."

"Obviously, you don't want to throw him into a burning, hot fire if you can avoid it," Ausmus said. "Sometimes you can't, if you go into extra innings and he's left in the bullpen and he comes into a tie game in the 12th. Can't control those situations, but ideally there's a little bit less pressure."

Knebel replaced another youngster, Robbie Ray, on the active roster. Ray was optioned to Triple-A Toledo after a rocky start Thursday, though Ausmus said the plan was to return him to Toledo regardless of how the outing went.

The hard-throwing Knebel brings a fastball and curveball that he "throws as hard as I can." He also has a changeup that he's been using sparingly.

His parents, Jeffrey and Melissa, were in attendance Friday night, as well as his fiancee, Danielle Matula.

Matt Slovin is an associate reporter for MLB.com. This story was not subject to the approval of Major League Baseball or its clubs.
