Preview Guthrie, Scherzer to face off on SaturdayBy Cash Kruth / MLB.com | 8/12/2011 11:40 PM ET
After a rough outing by Alfredo Simon on Friday, the Orioles are looking toward Jeremy Guthrie to come up with another solid effort.
Guthrie, who will be opposed by Tigers right-hander Max Scherzer, has tossed seven innings in each of his past five starts. It's that type of consistency that manager Buck Showalter would like to see from all his starters, a development he believes would also help the offense.
""What comes first?" Showalter said. "I think [pitching trouble] kind of wears on an offense sometimes. You really look at the offensive numbers; you might look at them a whole lot different if we were a lot more consistent with our starting pitching. There are some good things happening there, if we could just stay in the ballgame and pitch a little deeper."
Guthrie has been tough on the Tigers this season, allowing no earned runs in two starts against them. He's also fared well against Detroit throughout his career; his 2.83 ERA against the Tigers is his lowest mark against any American League club he has faced at least three times.
Scherzer, who saw his last start cut short because of a 46-minute rain delay in Kansas City, will try for the Tigers third consecutive win. In that outing, Scherzer allowed four runs on six hits over five innings, breaking a stretch of five starts in which he had limited opponents to two runs or fewer.
The right-hander is 1-1 with a 3.46 ERA in two career starts against Baltimore.
Tigers: Alburquerque hospitalized• Reliever Al Alburquerque suffered a concussion prior to Friday's game when he was hit in the head while playing catch in left field as the Orioles were taking batting practice. Alburquerque was to spend the night in a local hospital for observation and has been placed on the seven-day concussion disabled list.
• Jose Valverde has converted 34 consecutive saves to begin the season, the longest stretch in club history.
Orioles: Eyre joins club• Right-hander Wille Eyre, who had his contract selected from Triple-A Norfolk prior to Friday's game, made his Orioles debut, tossing 1 2/3 scoreless innings in relief. Eyre, who hadn't pitched in the Majors since 2009, signed with Baltimore on Aug. 3.
• Mark Reynolds, who has committed just one error in his past 35 games, is one shy of tying Brooks Robinson's franchise record (22) for the most miscues in a season by a third baseman.
Worth noting• Carlos Guillen is hitting .347 with 15 doubles in 48 games against the Orioles.
• Detroit's bullpen has an 0.84 ERA and 32 strikeouts in the past eight games.
• Reynolds broke his 17 at-bat hitless drought with a single in Friday's first inning.
Tigers: RHP Max Scherzer (11-7, 4.33 ERA)Scherzer is winless in three starts since beating the Twins on July 22, and is 2-5 with a 4.36 ERA since his 9-2 start to the season. The Orioles rocked him for 10 runs in his Spring Training finale back in March.
Orioles: RHP Jeremy Guthrie (5-15, 4.38 ERA)Despite giving up four runs in the second inning against the White Sox in his last outing, Guthrie rebounded to work seven frames. Guthrie ended up with a no-decision though, as an Orioles comeback was squashed by their bullpen in the eighth.
