Preview White Sox trying to turn tide against TigersBy Cash Kruth / MLB.com | 7/16/2011 12:41 AM ET
For just the second time in seven tries this season on Friday, the White Sox got the best of the Tigers. A big reason for Chicago's victory was the reversal of what had almost seemingly become commonplace between the two teams.
Entering Friday, Detroit had batted .320 with its pitchers posting a 2.38 ERA in the first six games against the White Sox this season. Chicago, meanwhile, had hit only .226 with a 6.18 ERA during that span.
In Friday's 8-2 win for the White Sox, that all changed. On Saturday, Chicago hopes for a repeat of Friday's success as it tries to string together consecutive victories against the Tigers for the first time since Aug. 5 and 13 of last season.
Taking that task with him to the mound on Saturday is right-hander Edwin Jackson, who opposes Tigers right-hander Max Scherzer. After getting shelled in his first start against Detroit this season -- eight runs (seven earned) on 12 hits in 5 2/3 innings on April 23 -- he gave the White Sox a chance to beat the Tigers on June 4, allowing two runs in six innings in an eventual no-decision and Chicago loss.
Jackson, who spent 2009 with the Tigers, is 3-2 with a 4.00 ERA in 11 games (nine starts) against Detroit.
Jackson will be facing a Tigers lineup that is expected to include second baseman
Carlos Guillen, who is returning from the 60-day disabled list to make his 2011 season debut.Following Friday's game, the Tigers announced they would be activating Guillen and right-handed reliever Al Alburquerque from the 15-day DL in time for Saturday's contest.
The club optioned infielder Danny Worth and pitcher Ryan Perry to Triple-A Toledo.White Sox: Dunn ready for second half• Adam Dunn's second-half opener brought a sigh of relief, as the designated hitter went 1-for-4 with two RBIs. After a first half in which he batted .160 with 117 strikeouts, Dunn said prior to Friday's game he's ready to start anew.
"I can't even put it into words," Dunn said of the All-Star break. "You go back home and you get away from it and it's amazing how good that I felt today, just mentally. I feel like it's a new start."
• Left-hander John Danks made his second rehab start with Triple-A Charlotte on Friday, throwing six shutout innings while allowing five hits, one walk and striking out four. Danks has been on the disabled list since June 26 with a strained right oblique.
Tigers: Leyland confident in Boesch• Brennan Boesch burst onto the scene last season with a monster first half, hitting .342 with 12 home runs and slugging .593. In the second half, however, he struggled, hitting only .163 with two home runs and a .222 slugging percentage.
After once again starting hot this season -- hitting .306 with 12 homers -- some might be worried about another summer swoon for the young outfielder. Tigers manager Jim Leyland, however, is not a part of that camp.
"Last year was last year. I'm not even concerned about that," Leyland said. "I'm staying totally positive. He's doing great, he's having a big year, a nice year for us and I'm going to expect him to have a nice year for us."
• Don Kelly started at third on Friday, but Leyland said that in no way dictates Brandon Inge's place in Detroit's lineup for the rest of the season.
"Nobody's discarding Brandon Inge. I hope that Brandon Inge is a huge factor the rest of the way out," Leyland said. "Nobody's discarding him. But he's struggling right now and I thought this was my best lineup tonight and that's what I'm putting in there."
Worth noting• Saturday marks the sixth game in a stretch during which the Tigers play 13 of their next 15 games against American League Central opponents. They are 18-9 against division foes this season. Likewise, Chicago is 3-5 in a stretch of 19 straight games against the AL Central. The White Sox are 9-16 against the division this season.
• Scherzer last faced the White Sox on April 24, allowing four hits in eight shutout innings. He is 2-1 with a 2.63 ERA in five career starts against Chicago.
•
On Friday, Detroit's Miguel Cabrera recorded his 1,500th career hit, becoming only the 12th Venezuelan-born player to accomplish the feat.• According to STATS LLC, Justin Verlander on Friday became the first Tigers pitcher to start consecutive games for the club since Mickey Lolich did so on Sept. 26, 1967 at New York and Sept. 30, 1967 against California.
•
The Tigers will hold their 17th annual Negro Leagues Tribute Game on Saturday. The Tigers will wear Detroit Stars uniforms, while the White Sox will wear Chicago American Giants uniforms. Tigers: RHP Max Scherzer (10-4, 4.69 ERA)Scherzer finally got his 10th win of the season, pitching 6 2/3 innings of one-run ball to beat Kansas City. The right-hander allowed just six hits and walked zero while lowering his ERA to 4.69.
White Sox: RHP Edwin Jackson (5-7, 4.30 ERA)Jackson has just one win over his last seven starts -- 1-2 with four no-decision -- despite going at least six innings in each of them and allowing more than four runs just once.
