| GDT: 8/20/10 - DET (58-63) VS CLE (50-71) - 7:05 p.m. ET --- VS --- Detroit Tigers VS Cleveland IndiansFriday, August 20, 2010Comerica Park, Detroit, MIGame Time - 7:05 p.m. EDTThis season dedicated to the late, great Ernie Harwell. ______________________________________ Galarraga returns to scene of crime vs. TribeBy Alden Gonzalez / MLB.com The last time Armando Galarraga took the mound, tensions flared among teammates. The last time he faced off against the Indians, perfection nearly took place -- and probably should have. Such is the backdrop for the start of the Tigers' six-game homestand, one that comes after dropping three of four to the Yankees, begins with a three-game weekend series against Cleveland and kicks off with Galarraga probably experiencing a bit of déjà vu. You know the story: On this very same Comerica Park mound and against this very same Indians team on June 2, Galarraga was one out away from becoming the third pitcher to record a perfect game this season and looked to have accomplished just that when he received a throw from Miguel Cabrera and touched first base just before Jason Donald. Jim Joyce, of course, called him safe. Now, after a warm embrace at home plate the following day and even an appearance with Joyce at the ESPY's, Galarraga will take the home mound against the Indians once again. But he downplayed that significance going in. "It's the same, man," Galarraga said. "Just attack the zone. I'm going to attack the zone more. I just want a win." The Tigers desperately need one, too. They're coming off an 11-5 loss to the Yankees that made them 10-21 in a stretch of 31 straight games against teams with winning records, and they recently added to their injury woes by placing Carlos Guillen on the disabled list. Heading into their series against Cleveland -- the team that put them on this slide with a four-game sweep coming out of the All-Star break -- the Tigers stand 12 games behind the first-place Twins in the American League Central. Jim Leyland can't expect another near-perfecto from Galarraga, but he'll need him to be better than he's been lately. In three August starts, Leyland's 28-year-old right-hander sports a 5.60 ERA. The last time Galarraga took the mound, he got into a heated verbal argument with catcher Alex Avila, then took a swipe at catcher Gerald Laird in the U.S. Cellular Field dugout before being separated by teammates. "It was just a misunderstanding. That's it," Galarraga said that Sunday. "You always try to make your [game] plan, but sometimes the plan's not the right way. It's a misunderstanding." Indians: Masterson looking for a repeat performanceJustin Masterson, who will oppose Galarraga in the series opener on Friday, is coming off hurling six shutout innings of one-hit ball against the Mariners on Sunday, a vast improvement over the seven runs (four earned) he allowed the start before. What was most impressive to Indians manager Manny Acta was the fact Masterson's gem came despite throwing 51 of his 100 pitches for balls and walking six batters.
"Just when you think you've seen it all, I've never seen a guy throw six scoreless innings with only one hit and throw more balls than strikes," Acta said after that game. "It shows the stuff this guy has. Even when he puts people on base, he has the stuff to get the next guy out." Tigers: Boesch to return FridayBrennan Boesch is expected to return to the Tigers' starting lineup on Friday after getting the previous two games off to clear his head (though he came in as a pinch-hitter on Thursday and notched an RBI single). The 25-year-old lefty hitter is batting .155 (9-for-58) in August with 18 strikeouts and one walk. He had been working recently with hitting coach Lloyd McClendon on a drill to help him track the ball better and get a better gauge for the strike zone. "I think he's lost his concentration a little bit," Leyland said Wednesday. "I spoke to him [Tuesday]. I didn't touch him up, but I just made a couple points: If you're swinging at 97 [mph] out of the strike zone, I can accept that. But if you're swinging at 89, 88 out of the strike zone, that's not totally acceptable. That just means you're just frustrated, and your concentration's probably not where it needs to be." Worth notingWith two RBIs on Thursday, Miguel Cabrera reached the 100-RBI mark in a season for the seventh time in his career. He is also the first Tigers player to notch triple-digit RBIs in three straight seasons since Magglio Ordonez did it from 2006-08. ... Jose Valverde has converted 23 consecutive save opportunities for the Tigers, giving him the third-longest single-season streak in club history. ... The Indians committed a season-high five errors in Thursday's 7-3 win against the Royals. ______________________________________ Pitching matchupTIGERS: RHP Armando Galarraga (3-5, 4.53 ERA)Galarraga will make his first start since he got into a dugout argument with catchers Alex Avila and Gerald Laird over their game plan for pitching to the White Sox. The dispute isn't expected to have any impact on Galarraga or the catchers. INDIANS: RHP Justin Masterson (4-11, 5.23 ERA)Masterson was effectively wild Sunday against the Mariners. In six scoreless innings, he allowed just one hit. But he walked six guys. Of his 100 pitches, only 49 went for strikes. Masterson has been wildly unpredictable all year. ______________________________________
