Tigers eyeing turnaround in Chicago

There's no Easy button in baseball, but the Tigers could use a Reset one.

Detroit's 3-2 comeback win on Saturday over the White Sox could be an important starting point for a club that has gone 8-22 since the All-Star break.

"After the rash of injuries we had, we just got in a rut and we've been trying to fight our tails off to come out of it," said Tigers manager Jim Leyland. "That's what we're going through. You get three, four hits a game like we were for a while, you don't come out of it. It's that simple."

White Sox manager Ozzie Guillen actually had a rosier outlook, comparing favorably the 2010 Tigers, who have lost Joel Zumaya and Magglio Ordonez to injury, to his 2004 White Sox, who sank in the standings after losing Ordonez and Frank Thomas to injury.

"I think they have better pitching than we had," Guillen said. "I look at the lineup and that's a pretty good lineup. They are still dangerous, very, very dangerous. Right now, they are playing relaxed, loose. That's the worst thing about it. When you face a team like that, you really can get hurt. They still have a lineup to score a lot of runs. I think their pitching staff is still there."

The Tigers send Armando Galarraga to the mound in the rubber match on Sunday. The White Sox will counter with Freddy Garcia, who is coming off a poor start: He allowed six Twins runs on eight hits in 2 1/3 innings on Tuesday.

Tigers: Perfection on his mind
Since his near-perfect game on June 2, Galarraga is 1-4 with a 5.11 ERA in 11 starts. "My own opinion," Leyland said, "he gives the hitters too much credit. You hear that all the time about 'trusting your stuff.'"

... Second baseman Carlos Guillen and first baseman Miguel Cabrera helped Detroit turn three double plays in Saturday's game.

White Sox: Unable to close
Closer Bobby Jenks was unavailable to pitch in Saturday's game. Manager Ozzie Guillen said the fate of Jenks, who hasn't thrown a side session since his back soreness flared up on Thursday, wouldn't be decided until prior to Tuesday's series opener with the Twins at Target Field.

... Chicago's Juan Pierre stole his 45th base in Saturday's game, increasing his American League lead over Tampa Bay's Carl Crawford.

Worth noting
Garcia owns the Tigers' Guillen (.227 in 22 at-bats) and Brandon Inge (.207 in 29) over the past five seasons.

... After Saturday's defeat, the White Sox have won seven of their first 10 matchups with Detroit.



Pitching matchup

TIGERS: RHP Armando Galarraga (3-5, 4.48 ERA)
The Tigers believe their perfect-game pitcher is trying too hard to make the perfect pitch. He's 1-4 with a 5.10 ERA in 11 starts since his memorable performance June 2, and he has walked 11 in his last 17 1/3 innings.

WHITE SOX: RHP Freddy Garcia (10-5, 4.90 ERA)
For the second time in his past four starts, the usually-steady Garcia was unable to last three frames. Garcia gave up six runs and three homers over 2 1/3 innings in a loss to the Twins, after allowing just four long balls in his past nine starts.
