White Sox trying to keep Tigers out of reach

With or without reliever Joel Zumaya and slugging outfielder Magglio Ordonez -- both suffered summer injuries that have altered their club's season -- the Tigers have flat-out struggled this season against the White Sox.

In fact, after Chicago's rain-delayed 8-4 victory over Detroit on Friday, the White Sox have won seven of the teams' first nine matchups in 2010.

"We played them in the beginning when they had the big boys. Now it's a little easier when you don't have Maggs and Zumaya, but those guys are all dangerous," White Sox manager Ozzie Guillen said. "They can go out there and score 20 runs and you don't even know about it. They still have a good ballclub."

But Guillen was being kind. His club has outscored Detroit by an average of 5.42 runs in its seven wins.

And the White Sox are in good position to extend their intra-division dominance. Saturday starter Edwin Jackson has been nothing if not solid since he was acquired from the Arizona Diamondbacks on July 30. The veteran right-hander has allowed just two earned runs in 13 innings, including his victorious Chicago debut on Aug. 4 at Detroit's Comerica Park.

Meanwhile, the Tigers' hopes will hinge on Rick Porcello, who hopes himself that a fourth time is the charm. The young righty is 0-3 with an 11.66 ERA in three 2010 starts against Chicago, most recently giving up seven White Sox runs on Aug. 3.

Tigers: Picking up the slack
Ordonez (fractured right ankle) will not return until, at the earliest, mid-September.

... Ryan Raburn (No. 5 of the season) and Brandon Inge (No. 7) homered in Friday's loss. Raburn finished a triple short of the cycle, going 3-for-4 out of the No. 8 spot.

White Sox: Teahen it up
Before Friday's series opener with Detroit, Chicago reinstated Mark Teahen (fractured right middle finger) from the 15-day disabled list. Teahen, who assumed the roster spot of recently demoted infielder Dayan Viciedo, started in right field on Friday and went 2-for-4 with a two-run home run.

... Closer Bobby Jenks, who complained of back spasm during Thursday's appearance, is listed as day-to-day.

... Jackson had lost four straight starts before he was traded.

Worth noting
Jackson owns Detroit's Johnny Damon, holding him to a .136 batting average in 22 all-time duels.

... On the other side, Teahen has two home runs in eight career at-bats against Porcello.



Pitching matchup

TIGERS: RHP Rick Porcello (5-10, 5.74 ERA)
The good news for Porcello is he's coming off a quality start in beating the Angels. The bad news is that the White Sox have beaten him twice in as many tries this year, including June 9, when they scored eight runs in 3 1/3 innings.

WHITE SOX: RHP Edwin Jackson (1-0, 1.38 ERA)
After a victorious White Sox debut in Detroit, Jackson allowed just two runs in six innings during a no-decision when facing the Orioles. He fanned seven and showed great command.
