Pair of vets hoping to rebound in opener

Tigers right-hander Jeremy Bonderman and White Sox lefty Mark Buehrle both lost their last starts, and with their teams embroiled in the race for the American League Central, both would like nothing better than to rebound in a hurry in Friday's series opener between the two clubs at U.S. Cellular Field.

Bonderman figures to have things more in his favor than he did in his last outing simply because he'll be pitching with the proper amount of rest Friday night. His last start -- a loss against the Angels -- marked the only time in his career that Bonderman has pitched with only three days between starts.

He went to 2-0 counts against 14 of the 21 batters he faced, leading to four walks and several other deep counts. He also lost a leadoff strikeout to a wild pitch and threw another wild pitch that put a runner in scoring position. Still, Detroit manager Jim Leyland liked what he saw.

"He did a heckuva job on just three days' rest," Leyland said. "I thought he really had good stuff. His command, surprisingly, wasn't as good. Normally, when you pitch on short rest, your command is supposed to be better. His wasn't, but his stuff was actually better. He didn't come out of it numbers-wise as well as he should. Our bullpen just didn't shut it down tonight at all. And of course, that hurt."

As for Buehrle, the veteran southpaw will lean on a solid career record of 15-8 against Detroit and hope for better luck than he got in his last start -- a 4-3 loss to the Orioles on Sunday in Baltimore. Buehrle was good that day, giving up three runs on 10 hits in seven innings, but Baltimore starter Jeremy Guthrie was just a bit better and the game-deciding runs came on pitches executed to Buehrle's liking.

"That's why this game is frustrating," Buehrle said. "I made two good pitches, I don't know if they were looking for them. But it wasn't like I hung pitches. Two good changeups. ... They put two good pitches in play, got doubles and drove in runs."

Tigers: Valverde still styling
Closer Jose Valverde has converted each of his past 22 save opportunities for the Tigers, which has him tied for the fifth-longest single-season streak in franchise history.

... Outfielder Brennan Boesch is four hits shy of 100 for the season. Once he reaches 100, he will join teammate Austin Jackson (128 hits this year) to give the Tigers their first rookie duo with 100 or more hits in a season since Lou Whitaker (138) and Alan Trammell (120) did it in 1978.

White Sox: Thornton on a roll
Lefty reliever Matt Thornton has made 22 consecutive scoreless appearances (18 innings) -- the third-longest streak in White Sox history behind teammate J.J. Putz (27 from May 14-July 28) and Shingo Takatsu (24 from April 23-June 29, 2004). Thornton and Putz are the first White Sox teammates to each compile scoreless streaks of 20 or more games in the same season.

... Second baseman Gordon Beckham is hitting 34-for-88 in his past 26 games and shortstop Alexei Ramirez is hitting 22-for-63 in his past 15.

Worth noting
Tigers reliever Phil Coke has a 3-2 record and 1.54 ERA (four earned runs in 23 1/3 innings) over his past 29 outings dating back to June 3. He is tied for second among AL relievers with six wins.

... The White Sox are 19-15 in one-run games (9-4 at home), but have lost three in a row and are 2-6 in the second half. Only four of Chicago's 16 losses since June 9 have come by more than two runs.



Pitching matchup

TIGERS: RHP Jeremy Bonderman (6-7, 4.96 ERA)
Bonderman will get an extra day's rest between starts after his start last Saturday on three days' rest went badly with four runs and four walks over 4 1/3 innings. He beat the White Sox with 6 2/3 innings of one-run ball on Aug. 3.

WHITE SOX: LHP Mark Buehrle (10-9, 4.04 ERA)
Mark Buehrle brings a 15-8 lifetime mark against the Tigers into this series opener. He also has a stellar 81-48 record during his 184 career appearances at U.S. Cellular Field. Buehrle lost his last start in Baltimore, working seven innings.
