He played in the Triple-A all-star game for Toledo and he still leads the International League with 56 extra-base hits a week after his callup to Detroit. At 27, going on 28, the future is now for Frazier, who batted .273/.316/.527 with 23 homers for the Mud Hens, but he probably lacks the plate patience or the defensive chops to avoid life as an up-and-down player.

| Minor League Transactions: Sept. 15-26Posted Sep. 30, 2010 10:49 am by Matt Eddy Filed under: TransactionsThis time: Sept. 15-26 It's the time of year that all 30 organizations begin getting their houses in order for the offseason. | Minor League Transactions: Sept. 26-Oct. 3Posted Oct. 7, 2010 4:36 pm by Matt Eddy Filed under: TransactionsThis time: Sept. 26-Oct. 3 If you couldn't get enough of players being reinstated from the disabled list last week, then this transactions installment is for you. In terms of player movement, the Braves, Reds and Indians each re-signed a player to a minor league deal. The Royals released three players and the Cubs one. A few others officially were transferred to the Arizona Fall League.
Perhaps the most notable feature is the flood of recalls, 151 in all. These are the 40-man roster leftovers who, for one reason or another, did not receive September callups. Perhaps their play didn't warrant a promotion. Or maybe they were on the DL all month. Or it's possible the organization didn't want to pay the approximately $66,600 required to call up a minor league player for September. That works out to one-sixth the major league minimum of $400,000.Detroit TigersAssigned to Arizona Fall League: OF Ben Guez

| Minor League Transactions: Nov. 1-8 Posted Nov. 10, 2010 5:34 pm by Matt Eddy Filed under: Transactions Be sure to check out the complementary Minor League Free Agents list, where you can view all 533 free agents on one screen. Teams have until Nov. 20, that's a week from Saturday, to finalize 40-man rosters in preparation for the Rule 5 draft. So what you're seeing in this installment is teams adding players to the 40-man, such as Melky Mesa (Yankees), Erik Cordier (Braves) and Cole Garner (Rockies), so that they would not qualify for minor league free agency.
The players here who elected free agency earned that right by virtue of their removal from the 40-man roster. The first time this happens they have no recourse—it's either minor league assignment or a new organization on a waiver claim. Upon second removal from the 40-man (and all subsequent outrights), he can elect free agency once he clears waivers. This is the case for Eddie Bonine (Tigers), Mike Hessman (Mets) and Steven Jackson (Pirates), among others.
Detroit Tigers Signed: LHP Ramon Garcia (re-signed), C Max St. Pierre (re-signed) Removed from 40-man roster:
RHP Eddie Bonine, RHP Jay Sborz, C Max St. Pierre ( then re-signed), OF Jeff Frazier Elected free agency:

| Minor League Transactions: Nov. 9-15 Posted Nov. 18, 2010 10:47 pm by Matt Eddy Filed under: Transactions To the commenter who noted that Cubs catcher Mark Johnson ought to be a free agent: You were right. Johnson shows up as a free agent in this installment of transactions. Six other players qualified for minor league free agency, if only briefly, before re-upping with their prior organizations: SS Christian Lara (Dodgers), SS Mario Lisson (Royals), LHP Drew Rundle (Philllies) and the Rangers trio of 2B Travis Adair, RHP Chris Mobley and SS Guilder Rodriguez. That is to say, these players technically hit the free agent market and then quickly re-signed one or two days later.

| 40-Man Roster Additions, A Complete Record Posted Nov. 23, 2010 11:05 am by Matt Eddy Filed under: Transactions Major league trades and free agent signings dominate offseason headlines, but behind the scenes each November all 30 organizations make crucial decisions about players in their minor league systems. The choices they make help shape the big league club’s roster in the near term. This year, clubs had two dates to keep in mind for minor league maintenance: • Nov. 6: On this date, minor league players who have accumulated at least six years of professional service can become minor league free agents if they have no deal in place for 2011. Teams added 12 such players to 40-man rosters prior to Nov. 6 in order to prevent them from leaving via free agency—they’re marked with an asterisk (*) below. The list includes the likes of Robinson Chirinos (Cubs), Cole Garner (Rockies) and Melky Mesa (Yankees). • Nov. 19: Qualifying players left off 40-man rosters after this date are eligible for selection in the major league Rule 5 draft. The qualification rules are difficult to condense, but Rule 5 eligibiles can broadly be sorted into two groups: 1.) Two- and four-year college players (19 and older) who signed their first pro contracts during the 2007 minor league season (or earlier), and 2.) High school and international prospects (18 and younger) who signed their first pro deals during the 2006 minor league season (or earlier). The bulk of the players here (125) fit into the second group. Those shielded from December's Rule 5 draft include a bevvy of intriguing prospects such as Chris Archer (Cubs), Engel Beltre (Rangers), Joe Benson (Twins), Dellin Betances (Yankees), Zach Britton (Orioles), Simon Castro (Padres), Alex Cobb (Rays), Zack Cozart (Reds), Randall Delgado (Braves), Nick Hagadone (Indians), Thomas Neal (Giants), Michael Pineda (Mariners), Wilin Rosario (Rockies) and Oscar Tejeda (Red Sox). | Minor League Transactions: Nov. 22-Dec. 1 Posted Dec. 5, 2010 12:30 am by Matt Eddy Filed under: TransactionsDetroit Tigers Signed: 1B Scott Thorman Scott Thorman slugged 16 homers for the Braves in ’06 and ’07, but hit just .222/.260/.407 in 415 at-bats and found himself back in the minors. He's hit very well for Triple-A Omaha in the Royals chain the past two seasons to pique the Tigers' interest. He hit a career-high 22 homers last season, while compiling a solid 48-to-75 walk-to-strikeout ratio and showing versatility by playing 20 games at third base and five in left field. The 28-year-old Thorman batted .280/.348/.491 with 22 homers and 31 doubles for Omaha last season, which looks a bit like another 28-year-old lefty slugger who had previously struggled to control the strike zone. Playing for Triple-A Rochester (Twins) in ’08, Garrett Jones batted .279/.337/.484 with 23 homers and 33 doubles. A year later, he hit his way into the Pirates lineup. | |

| Minor League Transactions: Dec. 2-8 Posted Dec. 13, 2010 1:03 pm by Matt Eddy Filed under: Transactions If you just can't wait for this blog each week to find out which players have signed minor league deals, I encourage you to follow @eddymk on Twitter. (That's me.) Detroit Tigers Signed: RHP Enrique Gonzalez (re-signed), LHP John Bale (Hiroshima (Japan)), C Omir Santos, OF Alex Nunez (Quebec (Can-Am)) The Tigers continue to look to the Far East for lefthanded relief, signing John Bale from Japan. In the past two offseasons, they signed Brad Thomas (Korea) in ’10 and Fu-Te Ni (Taiwan) in ’09. Bale appeared in 30 games for Hiroshima this season, striking out 21 and walking 15 in 26 2/3 innings. Alex Nunez, a 29-year-old corner outfielder/infielder, has spent the better part of the past six seasons in the independent Can-Am League. He's hitting .364/.436/.455 through 25 games for Aragua in the Venezuelan League, perhaps piquing the Tigers' interest. | |

| Minor League Transactions: Dec. 15-20Posted Dec. 21, 2010 8:16 pm by Matt EddyFiled under: TransactionsWe come to the final transactions installment for the year 2010. But unless teams stop signing, releasing and trading minor league players, we'll be back in 2011. Detroit TigersSigned: SS Argenis Diaz, OF Clay Timpner, OF Brandon TrippA plus defensive shortstop, 23-year-old Argenis Diaz has managed to hit just .243/.292/.269 in 123 Triple-A games. | Minor League Transactions: Jan. 11-17 Posted Jan. 19, 2011 12:59 pm by Matt Eddy Filed under: TransactionsDetroit TigersSigned: RHP Victor Moreno (Bologna (Italy)), 2B William Bergolla
The Tigers signed a pair of native Venezuelans in William Bergolla and Victor Moreno, but neither has played in the U.S. in the past two seasons. Bergolla last played for Triple-A Columbus (Nationals) in ’08, while Moreno last played in the States for the Orioles' Triple-A Norfolk affiliate in ’07. He spent parts of ’08 and ’09 in the Mexican League, but according to Twitter reader @afanofthegame20, Moreno pitched to greater acclaim in the Italian Baseball League the past two seasons. He helped Bologna win the league title in ’09, while last season he notched eight saves to go with a 0.56 ERA and 52-to-6 strikeout-to-walk ratio in 32 1/3 innings. In the Venezuelan League this winter, Moreno recorded 38 strikeouts in 44 innings.

| Minor League Transactions: Jan. 18-24 Posted Jan. 26, 2011 9:48 am by Matt Eddy Filed under: Transactions Detroit Tigers Signed: RHP Josh Rainwater (re-signed) Traded: RHP Armando Galarraga to Diamondbacks for RHP Kevin Eichhorn and LHP Ryan Robowski Some readers might remember Kevin Eichhorn's name from the most-recent Pioneer League top prospects list. Either that or the fact that he was Arizona's third-round pick in ’08 and is the son of reliever Mark Eichhorn, who spent parts of 11 seasons in the big leagues. Kevin has better stuff than his 4.94 ERA for Missoula indicates. A conventional pitcher, and not a side-armer like his father, he profiles as a back-of-the-rotation arm because of his simple delivery and fine fastball command. Eichhorn sits in the high 80s and touches 92 mph, mixing in an at-times hammer curveball. He'll be 21 this season and has no full-season ball experience yet, largely because he signed late in ’08 and then had ulnar nerve transposition surgery in his right elbow in March ’09. Hailing from the same Ohio Dominican program that produced the Giants' Jonathan Sanchez, Ryan Robowski is a strikeout-oriented lefty who can run his fastball up to 89-90 mph. A 14th-round pick in ’09, he spent all of last season in the high Class A California League, relieving in 35 games for Visalia and logging good ratios (8.5 strikeouts, 2.7 walks, 0.8 homers) over 54 innings. Righthanded batters hit the 23-year-old Robowski hard (.314/.382/.540), which could be a fluke or signal a future shift to situational relief. | |
