| James McCann2013 Rank: 12 ETA: 2014 Position: C Age: 22, DOB: 06/13/1990 Bats: R, Throws: R Height: 6' 2", Weight: 210 Drafted: 2011, 2nd (76) - DET Scouting Grades* (present/future): Hit: 3/5 | Power: 3/4 | Run: 2/2 | Arm: 5/6 | Field: 5/6 | Overall: 4/5 The 2011 Draft was another one in which the Tigers didn't have a first-round pick, this time thanks to the free agent signing of Victor Martinez. McCann's addition to the system gave Detroit some advanced catching depth, having taken Rob Brantly the year prior. Brantly has since been shipped off to the Marlins, leaving McCann as the top catching prospect in the system. His defensive work is his calling card. He's big and strong, yet athletic behind the plate, with excellent catch and throw skills that allowed him to throw out 43 percent of would-be basestealers during his first full season in pro ball. While his glove will undoubtedly get him to the big leagues, how much he'll ultimately hit will determine what his role is. If it all comes together, he'll be an average hitter without much power. Even if he's fringy, he could be a glove-first regular. At worst, he'll be a steady backup for a long time. | |

| Tigers send pair of catchers to Minor League campBy Jason Beck / MLB.com | 03/04/2013 6:44 PM ET LAKELAND, Fla. -- The first roster cuts of Tigers camp came early this year, but they were the same type of moves that have initially thinned out the roster each spring. Extra catchers Curt Casali and James McCann were reassigned to Minor League camp after Monday's win over the Astros.Simply put, they weren't going to get enough playing time going forward to further their development before the season opens. They were in camp primarily to help catch the many pitchers in camp during early workouts before games began. "This is much better for working purposes," manager Jim Leyland said. Both will have Tuesday off before reporting to Minor League camp on Wednesday. McCann was the Tigers' top pick in the 2011 First-Year Player Draft out of the University of Arkansas. The 22-year-old split last season between Class A Lakeland and Double-A Erie, combining for a .237 average with 22 doubles, two home runs and 39 RBIs. He's expected to return to Erie for this season. The 24-year-old Casali, a 10th-round pick in that same 2011 Draft out of Vanderbilt, split last season between West Michigan and Lakeland. Between the two levels, he hit .270 with 25 doubles, nine home runs and 43 RBIs in 94 games. Most likely, he'll return to Lakeland. Jason Beck is a reporter for MLB.com. Four Tigers prospects recognized as All-StarsBy Jason Beck and Bobby Nightengale / MLB.com | 6/26/2013 6:58 P.M. ET DETROIT -- The All-Star Futures Games participants aren't the only Minor Leaguers receiving recognition, as the Tigers had four prospects selected for the 2013 Eastern League All-Star Game.Catcher James McCann, second baseman Herman Perez, right-hander Warwick Saupold and lefty Will Startup were chosen from Double-A Erie for the game on July 10 at New Britain Stadium.McCann was the Tigers' top selection in the 2011 First-Year Player Draft. He's hitting .306 with two home runs and 32 RBIs, and is ranked as the top catcher and the team's No. 11 prospect in the Tigers' farm system by MLB.com. The Tigers signed Perez as a non-drafted free agent in 2007, and he's ranked as the team's No. 12 prospect. He has an Eastern League-high 24 doubles this season and is second in the league with 93 hits and 19 stolen bases. Perez played in two games with the Tigers last summer. Saupold will not participate in the All-Star Game after being placed on the seven-day disabled list with a shoulder injury. Before he was sidelined, he went 4-3 with a 2.96 ERA in 13 starts. The Tigers signed Startup this offseason after he was released by the Orioles. He's made 16 appearances out of Erie's bullpen, holding opposing hitters to a .195 batting average with a 2.10 ERA. | Catching prospect McCann gets Futures Game callBy Jason Beck / MLB.com | 7/7/2013 1:55 P.M. ET CLEVELAND -- James McCann's season at Double-A Erie lifted him from a well-regarded defensive catcher in the Tigers' system to a legitimate catching prospect. Now it has landed him in the Sirius XM All-Star Futures Game.McCann was added to the U.S. Team on Saturday to replace White Sox catching prospect Josh Phegley, whom Chicago promoted to the big leagues on Friday. The move gives the Tigers two players in the Futures Game for the third consecutive year. Triple-A Toledo first baseman Jordan Lennerton was the lone Tigers farmhand on the initial rosters.McCann was Detroit's top pick out of Arkansas two years ago in the First-Year Player Draft and split last season between Erie and Class A Lakeland. He threw out 49 of 113 would-be basestealers for a 43 percent caught-stealing rate, but struggled to make the jump at the plate, batting just .200 at Erie after hitting .288 in A-ball. His offense this year has been a revelation of sorts, with a .288 average and a .703 OPS to go with 15 doubles, three home runs and 36 RBIs. One American League scout who scouted the SeaWolves recently said McCann has gotten stronger and has raw power potential to go with average. Defensively, manager Jim Leyland said, "he can catch and throw in the big lea Jason Beck is a reporter for MLB.com. Read Beck's Blog and follow him on Twitter @beckjason. | Marte released as Tigers make first spring cutsBy Adam Berry / MLB.com | 3/12/2014 5:56 P.M. ET LAKELAND, Fla. -- The Tigers made their first round of Spring Training roster cuts Wednesday morning, sending out eight players and unconditionally releasing right-hander Luis Marte.Marte hasn't pitched for the Tigers since 2012, when he posted a 2.82 ERA in 22 1/3 innings over 13 appearances. The 27-year-old righty pitched in three games for Triple-A Toledo last year before undergoing season-ending surgery on his right shoulder. Marte was designated for assignment when the Tigers signed outfielder Rajai Davis this offseason. Tigers manager Brad Ausmus said the decision to release Marte, rather than reassign him, was simply a product of the numbers game."He wasn't going to make the big league club, and it was a situation where there really wasn't a spot in Triple-A for him," Ausmus said. "You never want to tell someone that you're releasing them, but the truth is it's better now than later, [because] you have an opportunity to catch on with somebody else. "He's a great kid, a classy kid. Worked hard. It just wasn't going to work here. Hopefully he can catch on in another organization." Left-hander Casey Crosby and right-hander Melvin Mercedes were optioned to Triple-A Toledo, while right-hander Jose Valdez and catcher Ramon Cabrera were optioned to Double-A Erie. Right-hander Drew VerHagen, lefties Duane Below and Robbie Ray and catcher James McCann were reassigned to Detroit's Minor League camp.Ausmus said he and pitching coach Jeff Jones were impressed by VerHagen's mound presence and ability, but the 23-year-old could use more experience. The same could be said for Ray, acquired in the deal that sent Doug Fister to Washington, but Ausmus added that the 22-year-old lefty also needs to refine his secondary offerings before he's Major League-ready. "I was actually impressed with Robbie," Ausmus said. "He's one of the few guys who has -- we've talked about kind of a swing-and-miss fastball. It plays up a couple miles per hour on the radar gun. But I think it's important for him to not only go down and gain experience, but work on his secondary pitches -- specifically the breaking ball, and see if we can tighten that up. But I certainly liked how he pitched."He's definitely close. A lot of it's going to depend on the secondary pitches. If he commands his secondary pitches, he's going to be a Major League pitcher, because his fastball plays in the Major Leagues right now." After their first wave of spring roster moves, the Tigers have 46 players remaining in Major League camp. Adam Berry is a reporter for MLB.com. Follow him on Twitter at @adamdberry.
