Cameron Keith Maybin (born April 4, 1987 in Asheville, North Carolina) is a Major League Baseball player in the San Diego Padres. He was the tenth pick in the 2005 First-Year Player Draft. He was consistently ranked as the Tigers top minor league prospect before being dealt. He is a cousin of NFL linebacker Aaron Maybin, NBA guard Rashad McCants, and a third cousin of Canadian Football League running back John Avery.[1][2][3][4]

High school

Maybin played high school baseball for T.C. Roberson High School in Asheville, North Carolina. As a freshman, he led his team to a state title and was named the tournament's Most Valuable Player.[5] Joe Hayden, his manager with the Midland Redskins, said he had "the same instincts in the outfield and at the plate" as Ken Griffey, Jr., who Hayden also coached in the Connie Mack division, an amateur baseball league for players 18 and younger.[5]The summer before his senior season, Maybin won the Connie Mack World Series batting title and World Series MVP award in Farmington, New Mexico.[citation needed] Maybin was also named the 2004 Baseball America Youth Player of the Year.

Minor leagues

After graduating from high school, Maybin entered the Major League draft. In their pre-draft rankings, Baseball America tabbed him as the most promising available outfielder and the third-best hitting prospect overall.[6] He fell to the tenth spot in the 2005 draft, in part due to speculation he'd be difficult to sign.[7] He signed in September for a $2.65 million bonus.[8]

In 2006, Maybin played his first professional season for the Class-A West Michigan Whitecaps, helping them win the Midwest League championship. He had a batting average of .304, hit nine home runs and stole twenty-seven bases. He was chosen to participate in the All-Star Futures Game.[9] In late November 2006, Cameron was given the Class A Playoff Performer Award by MiLB.com.[10] He began the 2007 season with the Lakeland Flying Tigers of the High-A Florida State League.[11] On August 9, 2007, Maybin was promoted from the Single-A Lakeland Flying Tigers to the Double-A Erie Seawolves.

Maybin last played in the minors for the Double-A Carolina Mudcats where he was hitting .262 with 12 home runs, 38 RBIs and 17 stolen bases to go along with a hefty 99 strikeouts in 309 at-bats (82 games).

Major Leagues

Detroit Tigers

Maybin was called up to the Tigers on August 17, 2007, and made his major league debut that day. In his second game, Maybin picked up his first career hit (a single) and first career home run, both off of Roger Clemens. During his next plate appearance, he was hit by a Clemens fastball. In the same game, Maybin also earned his first Major League stolen base. Thus, Maybin received his first Major League hit, home run, hit-by-pitch and stolen base in the same game.[citation needed]

On December 5, 2007, the Tigers traded Maybin, Andrew Miller, Mike Rabelo, Dallas Trahern, Eulogio De La Cruz, and Burke Badenhop to the Florida Marlins for Dontrelle Willis and Miguel Cabrera.[12]

Florida Marlins

On September 16, 2008, Maybin was called up to the Florida Marlins. Maybin went 16 for 32 (.500 average) with 4 stolen bases.

On April 6, 2009, Maybin was the starting center fielder for the Florida Marlins when they faced the Washington Nationals on Opening Day. Maybin was sent down in May to the AAA affiliate of the Marlins after a poor start to the 2009 season.[citation needed]

San Diego Padres

Following the 2010 season, Maybin was traded to the Padres for Ryan Webb and Edward Mujica.[13]

Maybin hurts shoulder slightly

October 23, 2007

By JON PAUL MOROSI

FREE PRESS SPORTS WRITER

Tigers prospect Cameron Maybin left an Arizona Fall League game Monday afternoon with a slight left shoulder strain, according to his agent, Bob Baratta.

Maybin sustained the injury while swinging a bat, Baratta said.

It’s not known whether he will resume playing this week.

Club officials intended for Maybin to get more regular at-bats in the AFL than he did during his six weeks in Detroit at the end of the year. Now, it appears the promising 20-year-old could lose some developmental time due to the injury. During the regular season, he missed about one month with a partial dislocation of his other shoulder.

Maybin is the youngest player on his team, the Peoria Saguaros, and is considered by many scouts to be among the top prospects in the league. He is batting .219 (7-for-32) with two home runs and two RBIs in nine games.

Maybin spent much of the season at high Class A Lakeland, but was called up to the majors Aug. 17 after playing one week at Double-A Erie. He batted .143 in 24 big-league games this year.

Day 4 in Nashville
Dec. 2007

In their search for a center fielder, the Padres took a brief look at Tigers minor leaguer Cameron Maybin, an elite prospect who was the key player to Detroit's package that brought Marlins slugger Miguel Cabrera and pitcher Dontrelle Willis. The Padres weren't serious about getting Maybin because the price would have been too high, but General Manager Kevin Towers said Maybin left a strong impression on him.

"That kid's got a chance to be a star," Towers said. "He's a stud. He's got a lot of talent."

Towers termed it a "great trade for both teams" and marveled at how powerful the Tigers lineup will be.

Marlins executive Larry Beinfest said another prospect acquired in the trade, left-handed pitcher Adam Miller, is ready to help the Marlins. "Miller, we expect to be in our rotation, and Maybin, the center fielder, hopefully will be there very soon," Beinfest said.

Tigers GM Dave Dombrowski said the franchise's owner, Mike Ilitch, got the ball rolling. Following reports that talks between the Angels and the Marlins had stalled, Ilitch asked Dombrowski to explore a deal with Florida. Beinfest, by the way, sounded pretty ticked off today when commenting on reports that his club hadn't negotiated in good faith with the Angels and Dodgers. Angels owner Arte Moreno had complained publicly that the Marlins, in talks with both the Dodgers and Angeles, switched players after trade scenarios had been negotiated.

Beinfest said the complaints were "unproffessional" and a "little off base." He added: "There's never a deal until there's a deal. In that situation, there were no deals."

Beinfest said it was an emotional process, because he is so fond of Cabrera and Willis, two players who helped the Marlins win the 2003 World Series. "Dontrelle Willis was the first my trade of my career...it's tough," Beinfest said.

Don't discount the low-budget, youthful Marlins from blossoming in short order, said Tigers manager Jim Leyland, who directed Florida to its World Series title in 1997. "One of the biggest things people forget is that in the last 10 years, the Florida Marlins, the Boston Red Sox and the New York Yankees are the only teams that have won multiple World Series championships," Leyland said.

Maybin and Miller not untouchable; Tigers opening up to trade possibilities

December 4, 2007

By JON PAUL MOROSI

FREE PRESS SPORTS WRITER

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The assumption that the Tigers would not make a big trade during this week’s winter meetings was always conditional: As long as they refused to trade outfielder Cameron Maybin, and as long as they refused to trade left-hander Andrew Miller, they would need to be spectators in all sweepstakes for the biggest names in baseball.

Maybin was untouchable, many in the industry believed. Miller was virtually untouchable, too.

At some point in the last 24 hours, though, the philosophy seems to have changed.

The club has had internal discussions about whether they should include Maybin and Miller in trade offers – a development that could immediately vault them into trade discussions for Oakland right-hander Dan Haren, Florida third baseman Miguel Cabrera and Florida left-hander Dontrelle Willis.

The Tigers and Marlins have discussed both Miller and Maybin, but it is not clear if they would be available in the same deal.

Detroit is believed to have more interest in Cabrera than Willis. Cabrera is a personal friend of Tigers first baseman Carlos Guillen.

Detroit has a greater need for pitching than offense, and Haren is at the top of the Tigers’ list – ahead of Johan Santana, even – among the pitchers that could be dealt.

One industry official indicated to the Free Press today that Detroit would be willing to include Miller in a trade offer for Haren. That could pique the A’s interest, since their front office is said to be very fond of Miller.

The Tigers also have several prospects – notably shortstop/second baseman Scott Sizemore, utility man Michael Hollimon, and first baseman Jeff Larish – who have the good plate discipline Oakland likes in position players.

An offer of Maybin and Miller could overwhelm the A’s. Given the choice, the Tigers would prefer to deal Miller rather than Maybin.

Detroit showed interest in Willis earlier this off-season, and the Tigers have long had an interest in Cabrera, whom Detroit assistant general manager Al Avila signed during his tenure with the Marlins.

The Tigers would likely need to part with Maybin in any trade for Cabrera or Willis, because of the Marlins’ lack of a long-term centerfielder.

Cabrera, Willis traded to Tigers in blockbuster deal

December 4, 2007

By JON PAUL MOROSI

FREE PRESS SPORTS WRITER

STORY UPDATED: 7:44 p.m.

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – In a move that will transform the team’s roster and expectations, the Tigers on Tuesday agreed to a trade with the Florida Marlins that will bring third baseman Miguel Cabrera and left-handed pitcher Dontrelle Willis to Detroit, in exchange for a package of six prospects headlined by outfielder Cameron Maybin and left-hander Andrew Miller.

Until Monday night, many in the industry believed Detroit would not trade Maybin under any circumstances and would be very reluctant to deal Miller. But in a whirlwind 24-hour span, the Tigers agreed to part with both of them in return for two players who immediately make them one of the favorites to win the World Series next year.

According to one club official with knowledge of the negotiations, Detroit has tentatively agreed to include catcher Mike Rabelo and right-handed pitchers Dallas Trahern, Eulogio De La Cruz and Burke Badenhop in the deal.

The trade had not been officially announced as of 7:30 p.m. Eastern time.

Team officials postponed a briefing with the local media, scheduled for 6:10 p.m., a sign that they were in the midst of serious negotiations. Shortly after that, the Free Press reported that a deal between the Marlins and Tigers had been completed.

The club also considered trading for Oakland right-hander Dan Haren and Baltimore left-hander Erik Bedard. By late afternoon on Monday, though, it was clear that the team’s first preference was to acquire Cabrera and Willis in a monumental swap.

Cabrera, 24, and Willis, 25, are both due to become free agents after the 2009 season. It’s not clear whether Detroit has made plans to pursue contract extensions with them.

The deal was remarkable in both its magnitude and unexpected nature. One night before the trade, Detroit club president/general manager Dave Dombrowski said he was “very happy” with his team’s everyday lineup. Then he added Cabrera, the most formidable young hitter in baseball since Albert Pujols.

On Monday, manager Jim Leyland pointed out that the Tigers did not arrive in Nashville with a glaring weakness, but added, “By having conversations with people, who knows if something will pop up?”

As a result of the deal, Detroit is now willing to move third baseman Brandon Inge, outfielder Marcus Thames and right-handed pitcher Chad Durbin, in order to free up money in the Tigers’ payroll.

Inge, who will be displaced at third base by Cabrera, is owed $19.1 million over the next three seasons, and Detroit may need to absorb some of that salary in order to trade him. Durbin and Thames were due to receive raises in arbitration.

The Tigers entered the week without needing to upgrade their offense, but could not resist the opportunity to land Cabrera – especially since the team’s front office has a long history with him.

Detroit assistant general manager Al Avila signed Cabrera out of Venezuela during his tenure as an executive with the Marlins, and Cabrera is a personal friend of Tigers first baseman Carlos Guillen.

He also happens to be one of the best hitters in baseball. He batted .320 with 34 home runs and 119 RBIs for the Marlins this year. According to Retrosheet.org, the player with the most comparable stats through age 24 is longtime home run king Hank Aaron.

Cabrera batted almost exclusively third and fourth for Florida this season. He provides the Tigers with yet another middle-of-the-order presence, to go along with Gary Sheffield, Magglio Ordonez, and Guillen, who batted third, fourth, and fifth, respectively, for most of the 2007 season.

Cabrera, like Sheffield, Ordonez, and new shortstop Edgar Renteria, is a right-handed hitter.

Kenny Rogers re-signed with the Tigers last week, which seemed to eliminate their need for another veteran starter. But Detroit’s interest in Willis rekindled, and a deal became possible once the club retreated from its former stance that Maybin and Miller –considered integral to the Tigers’ future as recently as Monday night – were untouchable in trade talks.

The arrival of Willis gives the Tigers one of the best rotations in baseball. Detroit’s starting staff will now include three left-handed pitchers – Willis, Rogers, and Nate Robertson – along with right-handers Justin Verlander and Jeremy Bonderman.

In addition to Maybin and Miller, the Tigers surrendered two prospects – Trahern and De La Cruz – who were among the organization’s ten best in preliminary rankings by Baseball America.

Catching up with three ex-Tigers: Andrew Miller, Cameron Maybin and Carlos Pena

FREE PRESS STAFF AND NEWS SERVICES • February 23, 2008

Former Tigers left-hander Andrew Miller is in Marlins camp, hoping to replace new Tiger Dontrelle Willis in Florida's rotation.

Miller was one of six players, along with outfielder Cameron Maybin and catcher Mike Rabelo, acquired in the December trade that sent Willis and third baseman Miguel Cabrera to the Tigers.

"He's throwing in the mid- to upper-90s on both sides of the plate," Rabelo said of Miller. "His pitches sink and cut, and he throws across his body. He's deceptive. He's big. I'm just glad I'm catching him and not trying to hit."

Maybin is earning raves in Marlins camp.

Manager Fredi Gonzalez describes Maybin as having the speed to be a leadoff man but with the power to be a run producer. "His potential is off the charts," Gonzalez told the Miami Herald. "And I think his character and makeup will allow him to do that."

Where Maybin will be Opening Day isn't certain. "There are some in the organization who want him to start in Double-A (Carolina)," Gonzalez said. "But some say bring him up right now. We'll do what's best for him."

Former Tigers first baseman Carlos Pena is hoping to duplicate his 2007 season for Tampa Bay, where he set team records with 46 home runs and 121 RBIs.

"Last year was a magical year, no doubt about it," said Pena. "But this year there is a blank canvas in front of me, and I intend to paint a beautiful picture."

Get your Tigers tickets

The Tigers will resume the sale of full-season plans Monday. New 27- and 41-game mini-plans are also still on sale. Instead of Opening Day tickets, however, the 27- and 41-game plans are being offered with an additional game against the Red Sox or Yankees. Tickets are available at the Comerica Park box office, online at www.tigers.com, or by calling 866-668-4437.

Ex-Tiger Maybin makes quick impression with Marlins

Associated Press

JUPITER, Fla. -- Former Detroit Tigers star prospect Cameron Maybin was with the Class-A Asheville Tourists when he began to catch the eye of major league talent hunters.

At the time, he was a 12-year-old batboy.

Mike Hill was farm director for the Colorado Rockies, the Tourists' parent club. He remembers young Maybin shagging flies and taking batting practice with the team when he wasn't fetching bats.

"Even back then, you saw the makings of a pretty special player," Hill said. "Cameron was a big kid, probably 6-foot or 6-1. You watched him run around the field and said, 'That's a guy I'm putting on my list for a few years down the line.'"

Nine years later, Hill is the Florida Marlins' general manager and Maybin is creating a buzz in their spring training camp.

Maybin was acquired in December in the blockbuster trade that sent Miguel Cabrera and Dontrelle Willis to the Tigers. Hill said the deal probably would have fallen through had the Tigers refused to part with Maybin.

Unless he has a bad spring, he'll likely be the starting center fielder on Opening Day, a few days before he turns 21.

"We're in no rush," Hill said. "If he's not ready, we'll wait until he is ready. He'll dictate to us.

"We do know he's extremely talented. He's a five-tool player. And on top of that, he's just a great kid."

Maybin, who was called up to the Tigers in August, is optimistic that he's ready to stay in the majors, despite batting only .143 with 21 strikeouts in 49 at-bats for Detroit.

He was undaunted by his struggles.

"I feel like I'm definitely ready to take on the big-league challenge and big-league grind and playing every day at the big-league level," Maybin said. "I'm confident in my ability."

A lanky 6-foot-4, Maybin is all arms and legs sprinting around the bases.

"He doesn't run. He glides," said teammate Luis Gonzalez, himself a former Tiger. "He's impressive to watch."

The 40-year-old Gonzalez said he's willing to serve as a mentor this season, but he's not sure Maybin needs much help.

"What do you tell a kid like that?" Gonzalez said. "Everything looks so natural."

Maybin leaves with tight hamstring
02/29/2008 5:55 PM ET
By Joe Frisaro / MLB.com

Source

JUPITER, Fla. -- Marlins center-field prospect Cameron Maybin was removed from Friday's game against the Nationals due to tightness in his left hamstring.

The 20-year-old, who is competing for a starting job, tweaked his hamstring after reaching on an error by shortstop Felipe Lopez. On the play in the ninth inning, Maybin rounded first base and pulled up. He was replaced by pinch-runner Paul Hoover.

The Marlins had a split-squad day Friday, playing two games. While half the team remained in Jupiter to face the Orioles, Maybin traveled to Viera, Fla., for the meeting with the Nationals.

"We don't know if it's a pull or a cramp," manager Fredi Gonzalez said. "So we just took him out of the game. It didn't pop, so that's a good sign."

Maybin is a highly touted former first-round Draft pick who was dealt to the Marlins from the Tigers in December as part of the Dontrelle Willis-Miguel Cabrera trade.

Even before Maybin aggravated his leg Friday, the Marlins have intended to be ultra careful with him.

The organization has made it clear that Maybin was brought in to be its regular center fielder, but the big question remains as to exactly when he will be ready.

He won't turn 21 until April 4, and he has only 69 at-bats above the Class A level, including 49 with the Tigers last year.

In recent days, there has been growing indications around camp that the team is leaning toward starting off Maybin in the Minor Leagues for more seasoning.

Since speed is such a big part of Maybin's game, any kind of leg ailment could hold him back from being able to seriously compete for a starting job. He is regarded as a future star, and the Marlins appear to be in no rush to accelerate his development any more than they have to.

If Maybin isn't ready for Opening Day, Cody Ross and Alejandro De Aza, a left-handed hitter, could wind up platooning the position. De Aza is off to a fast spring. He connected on a grand slam Thursday, and followed that up with a homer Friday against the Nationals.

Marlins send Cameron Maybin to minors
Associated Press

JUPITER, Fla. -- Cameron Maybin will start the season in the minors for the Florida Marlins.

One of baseball's top prospects and a centerpiece of the trade that sent Dontrelle Willis and Miguel Cabrera to Detroit in December, the 20-year-old Maybin was optioned to Double-A Carolina on Monday after going 0-for-5 during Florida's 10-10 tie with the Houston Astros in 10 innings.

Maybin went hitless in his final 18 at-bats, finishing the spring with a .190 batting average, three homers and eight RBIs.

"We still see him as the center fielder of the future. It's not going to be opening day," general manager Larry Beinfest said. "He needs to get some additional at-bats in the minor leagues, then hopefully he'll be our center fielder for a long time."

The Marlins haven't picked a starting center fielder, but it will come down to Alejandro De Aza or Cody Ross.

"I felt like they gave me a legit opportunity and I think up until the last week I might have hurt myself when I got into a little funk," said Maybin, the 10th overall selection in the 2005 amateur draft. "It's another step I have to take."

Maybin struck out swinging with the potential winning run at second in the bottom of the ninth. The Marlins rallied for two runs in the inning after being down 7-3 earlier in the game. Right-handed starter Chris Volstad was hit hard for the first time this spring.

Volstad, a first-round pick in the 2005 draft, entered 3-0 with a 1.13 ERA while bidding for a spot in the rotation. He gave up five straight hits, including three doubles, in the first inning Monday. He allowed seven runs in two innings.

Volstad is considered a long shot to win a spot, but manager Fredi Gonzalez said his rough outing won't hurt his chances.

"Everybody's allowed to have one of those games," Gonzalez said. "He has pitched too well for you to put all your eggs in one basket and make your decision on two innings."

Houston's Shawn Chacon endured a windy afternoon and allowed four earned runs in five innings.

"I was ahead of the hitters. I threw strikes. They didn't hit me hard. A bunch of bloopers," said Chacon, Houston's fourth starter. "It was one of those days where the wind was messing with the ball. More often than not I'm going to come out of there without giving up that many runs."

Geoff Blum started at shortstop and went 2-for-2 with a double and three RBIs. He fouled a pitch off his left heal in the first inning, aggravating a previous injury. He left the game after the second inning but didn't consider the setback serious.

"It's been nagging me for about a week now. I just kind of re-aggravated it. If I had to I could have played through it," Blum said.

For the Marlins, catcher Matt Treanor (left calf cramp) returned to action for the first time since March 13. He went 1-for-3 and caught eight innings.

Marlins call up Maybin

Cameron Maybin was one of four players called up today by the Florida Marlins. He's expected to be in uniform Tuesday when the Marlins play the Houston Astros.

Maybin, a former Roberson High standout, started his major league career with the Detroit Tigers in the 2007 season where he had 49 at-bats in 24 games. Maybin hit a home run and scored eight times in his stint while batting .143. He was traded during the off season to the Marlins.

Maybin hit .277 during the regular season for the Carolina Mudcats this season. The Mudcats' are the Marlins' Class AA affiliate

Maybin's shoulder surgery a success
Center fielder expected to be ready by Spring Training

By Joe Frisaro / MLB.com

11/09/09 5:13 PM EST

MIAMI -- Down the stretch, Cameron Maybin was hindered by a sore left shoulder.

The Marlins center fielder addressed the issue on Monday.

Maybin, 22, underwent surgery to repair a partially torn labrum in his left shoulder. The team announced everything went well, and the speedster is expected to be ready when Spring Training opens in February.

Maybin dealt with shoulder discomfort late in the season, but he played through it.

After opening the season as the Marlins' starting center fielder, Maybin was optioned to Triple-A New Orleans in May, shortly after Chris Coghlan was promoted.

Maybin received ample playing time in September, especially after Jeremy Hermida, traded to the Red Sox on Thursday, went down with a right oblique injury.

In September, Maybin batted .293 with eight doubles, three home runs, 10 RBIs and 19 runs scored.

If Maybin isn't ready when Spring Training begins, Cody Ross again could assume the center-field spot.

Although Ross is in his second season of arbitration, he is expected to return. Ross projects to play right if Maybin wins the center-field job.

Marlins deal Maybin, bolster back end of 'pen
Club adds righties Webb, Mujica; Coghlan might man center
By Joe Frisaro / MLB.com | 11/13/10 7:09 PM EST

MIAMI -- The reshaping of the Marlins' bullpen is under way.

And once again, for Florida to retool its relief corps, it took a major piece of a major trade that was completed three years ago.

On Saturday afternoon, the Marlins traded center fielder Cameron Maybin to the Padres for right-handers Ryan Webb and Edward Mujica.

The Marlins announced the deal a day after they traded lefty Andrew Miller to the Red Sox for left-handed reliever Dustin Richardson.

Maybin and Miller were both centerpieces in the 2007 blockbuster trade that sent Miguel Cabrera and Dontrelle Willis to the Tigers.

"Three relievers in two days," Marlins president of baseball operations Larry Beinfest said. "Like we said when the offseason was beginning, the bullpen was a priority, and we went right at it.

"In this deal, we identified a club that had young relief pitching depth. We saw the Padres as a team that might be in need of a center fielder. This thing cooked up rather quickly, and it seemed to make sense. This deal happened to take advantage of each other's needs."

A first-round Draft pick of Detroit in 2005, Maybin is a 23-year-old speedster who split time this past season with the Marlins and Triple-A New Orleans.

Beinfest said it was coincidence that Miller and Maybin, who both arrived together, exited on back-to-back days.

"When we made the trade, it was a big trade, absolutely, at the time," Beinfest said of the 2007 deal with Detroit. "We were hopeful that Andrew and Cameron would be big parts of our ballclub for years to come. In both their cases, they wished and we wished their performance would have been better at this time."

Maybin has dealt with some injury issues. He had left shoulder surgery in November 2009.

"I still think for both of them that they will be very good Major Leaguers," Beinfest said of Maybin and Miller. "Cameron has wonderful talent. He dealt with some injuries. He dealt with some non-performance. He never really had the sustained time in the big leagues to show what we think he was capable of doing at the time of the trade.

"They'll get an opportunity elsewhere. They came together. But it wasn't one of those deals where we were thinking of moving them on together, either. It happened in two days of each other. It was just one of those things. You've got to give to get, and Cameron is a good young talent. In order to get the quality of relievers that we got back, you have to deal good young talent, which happened to be Cameron."

In 82 games with the Marlins, Maybin batted .231 with eight homers, 28 RBIs and 46 runs scored.

With Maybin now headed to San Diego, the Marlins center-field options are Chris Coghlan, Scott Cousins, Emilo Bonifacio and Bryan Petersen.

Beinfest said on Saturday night that the team has already asked Coghlan to be ready to take fly balls in center field when Spring Training gets under way.

Coghlan is recovering from surgery to repair the meniscus in his left knee. The team initially had been planning on switching him to third base. Now, the Marlins appear willing to give prospect Matt Dominguez a serious look at third.

"We talked to Chris Coghlan, and we've asked him, when the knee is ready, to start taking fly balls in center field," Beinfest said.

Saturday's trade gives the Marlins two relievers with big league experience. Both are being looked at to pitch in the late innings.

Webb, 24, appeared in 54 games with the Padres in 2010, posting a 3-1 record and a 2.90 ERA. The right-hander threw 59 innings.

In two Major League seasons, the 6-foot-6 right-hander is 5-2 with a 3.19 ERA in 82 appearances.

Mujica is a 26-year-old from Venezuela who went 2-1 with a 3.62 ERA in 59 appearances.

In 69 2/3 innings, the right-hander struck out 72 and walked six in 2010.

"In Webb and Mujica, we see them fitting right into the back end of our bullpen," Beinfest said. "They both have power stuff. They've both pitched in the big leagues.

"We want to add to the back end of the bullpen. That's what we wanted to do. In this case, Cameron Maybin was the piece to go in this deal to make it work."
